Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:7~13 - To the Church in Philadelphia - A faithful church of little power, Receiving Only Praise from Jesus
Revelation 3:8 – I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut
☞ <Revelation> 3:8 - I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. (NIV); "I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. (NLT)
○ “I have placed before you an open door” means “I have opened a door for you”, and this is a quote from <Isaiah> 60:11, it reads, "Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut“(NIV). <Isaiah> 60:11 indicates that LORD God prophesies the return of the nations to Jerusalem and the glory of Jerusalem, and this means that through the Messiah, that is, Jesus Christ, the people of God the Father will return to ‘New Jerusalem’.
☞ <Isaiah> 60:11 - Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations—their kings led in triumphal procession. (NIV)
○ This means ‘The New Jerusalem and Its Nations’ in chapters 21~22 of <Revelation>, which will be established in the new heaven and the new earth in c.AD 12,900, and it also means <Revelation> 21:25, it reads, “the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day”(KJV). The conclusion of the church in Philadelphia will be the New Jerusalem, where the door shall be always open because there shall be no night, that is, it shall be day only. Details will be covered in chapters 21~22 of <Revelation>.
☞ <Revelation> 21:25 - On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.(NIV); And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.(KJV)
○ From the point of view of Christian history, it can be interpreted as follows.
☞ First: Christ gives the word of permission that the door of missionary work to the world would be wide open for the churches during this period (1798~1844). In other words, it means that the door has been wide open so that the gospel can be spread globally. Transportation began to develop after the Industrial Revolution(1760~1840) in Europe, and it was at this time, before communism had taken root, that the doors of the whole world were open for the Gospel. Through the truth of God the Father, missionaries were able to be sent to almost all areas during this time.
☞ Second: It would mean that those who believe in and keep the words, covenant, and truth of God the Father and Jesus Christ, led by missionaries who have gone out to evangelize all over the world, will be saved and enter through the open door. Jesus says that no one can close the open door. The only one who can close is Jesus Christ. Until Jesus close the door, the gospel of this period (1798~1844) by missionaries was spread to each country, which probably means that the number of people saved in this time is the greatest.
○ Therefore, there is no word of rebuke at all from Jesus Christ to the church of Philadelphia. They had praises (or compliments) only. Just as the name of the Philadelphia means ‘brotherly love’, the church in Philadelphia was the church filled with passion, brotherly love, and beautiful mind. Although poor, the church in Philadelphia kept the word of Jesus and did not betray (deny) the name of Jesus. The church in Philadelphia was the church that internally filled its souls with the word of God the Father and externally devoted itself to missionary work.
