We always have many choices in life. One of the most important choices we have that we often don’t think of, is how we choose to see the world. Recently I read Aesop’s Fable about the fox and the grapes and I was reminded of this. The fox is hungry and sees some ripe grapes hanging from a branch. The fox tries with all her might to get the grapes but they are out of reach. When the fox realizes she cannot get them she becomes angry and thinks to herself: “Those grapes are sour anyways,” and then she moves on.
Are the grapes sour?
This particular fox chooses to see the grapes as sour and in the world she lives in the grapes will be sour. In everyday life when we try our hardest and still meet failure we usually, without thinking, react with some negative emotion. This negative emotion is a choice. We choose this negative emotion because it impels us to action. In the case of the fox, her anger impels her to leave the grapes and move on to something new.
We do not control where we will succeed and fail in life. We do control how we emotionally react.
Many times in life we will meet situations where we achieve our goals or fail to achieve our goals. Consider that the stories that we tell ourselves will define who we are as people and will also define the world we live in.
