우리는 알제 교외에서 내렸다. 그 해변은 버스정류장에서 멀지 않았다. 그러나 바다가 내려다보이면서 해변쪽으로 급히 내리막이 된 작은 언덕을 가로질러야만 했다. 그것은 이미 짙어진 하늘의 푸른색 위로 노르스름한 돌들과 온통 흰 수선화로 뒤덮여 있었다. 마리는 그것들(=수선화)을 가지고 그녀의 방수포 가방을 힘껏 내둘러 꽃잎들을 흩뿌리며 즐겼다.

Nous sommes descendus dans la banlieue d’Alger. La plage n’est pas loin de l’arrêt d’autobus. Mais il a fallu traverser un petit plateau qui domine la mer et qui dévale ensuite vers la plage. Il était couvert de pierres jaunâtres et d’asphodèles tout blancs sur le bleu déjà dur du ciel. Marie s’amusait à en éparpiller les pétales à grands coups de son sac de toile cirée.

우리는 알제 교외에서 내렸다. 바닷가는 버스 정류장에서 멀지 않았다. 그렇지만 바다를 굽어보다가 급히 해변으로 미끄러져 내려가는 작은 고원 하나를 가로질러야만 했다. 고원은 이미 푸른빛으로 짙게 물든 하늘을 배경 삼아 노란 돌과 새하얀 수선화로 덮여 있었다. 마리는 방수포 백을 휘둘러 여기저기 꽃잎을 떨어뜨리며 즐거워했다.

We got off in the outskirts of Algiers. The beach wasn’t far from the bus stop. But we had to cross a small plateau which overlooks the sea and then drops steeply down to the beach. It was covered with yellowish rocks and the whitest asphodels set against the already hard blue of the sky. Marie was having fun scattering the petals, taking big swipes at them with her oilcloth bag.

우리는 줄지어 있는 녹색이나 흰색의 담이 있는 작은 별장들 사이를 지나갔는데 어떤 것들은 위성류 아래 그것들의 베란다와 더불어 감추어져 있었고, 어떤 것들은 돌들 사이에서 노출되어 있었다. 고원의 가장자리에 이르기 전에 우리는 이미 움직임이 없는 바다와 더 멀리에는 맑은 물 속에 반쯤 잠든 그리고 거대한 곶을 볼 수 있었다.

Nous avons marché entre des files de petites villas à barrières vertes ou blanches, quelques-unes enfouies avec leurs vérandas sous les tamaris, quelques autres nues au milieu des pierres. Avant d’arriver au bord du plateau, on pouvait voir déjà la mer immobile et plus loin un cap somnolent et massif dans l’eau claire.

우리는 초록색 또는 흰색 울타리가 쳐진 작은 별장들 사이로 걸어갔는데, 몇몇 별장은 베란다까지 타마리스크 나무 아래 파묻혀 있었고, 다른 몇몇 별장은 돌무더기 가운데 헐벗은 채 서 있었다. 고원 가장자리에 가 닿기도 전에, 벌써 잔물결 하나 없는 바다와 저 멀리 맑은 물속에 반쯤 잠든 듯 떠 있는 커다란 곶이 보였다.

We walked between rows of small houses behind green or white fences, some with their verandas hidden behind the tamarisks, others standing naked among the rocks. Before we reached the edge of the plateau, we could already see the motionless sea and, farther out, a massive, drowsy-looking promontory in the clear water.

가벼운 엔진 소리가 고요한 대기속에서 우리에게까지 올라왔다. 우리는 멀리 눈부신 바다 위에서 느낄 수 없을 정도로 앞으로 나아가고 있는 작은 트롤선을 보았다. 마리는 바위에서 붓꽃 몇 송이를 땄다. 바다 쪽으로 기울어진 비탈에서 우리는 벌써 약간의 해수욕객이 있는 것을 보았다.

Un léger bruit de moteur est monté dans l’air calme jusqu’à nous. Et nous avons vu, très loin, un petit chalutier qui avançait, imperceptiblement, sur la mer éclatante. Marie a cueilli quelques iris de roche. De la pente qui descendait vers la mer nous avons vu qu’il y avait déjà quelques baigneurs.

가벼운 모터 소리가 고요한 대기를 뚫고 우리에게까지 올라왔다. 그리고 아주 멀리 조그마한 트롤선이 반짝이는 바다 위로 움직이는 듯 마는 듯 나아가는 모습이 보였다. 마리는 바위에서 붓꽃을 땄다. 바닷가로 내려가는 비탈길에서 보니 몇몇 사람이 벌써 물속에 뛰어들어 헤엄치고 있었다.

The faint hum of a motor rose up to us in the still air. And way off, we saw a tiny trawler moving, almost imperceptibly, across the dazzling sea. Marie gathered some rock irises. From the slope leading down to the beach, we could see that there were already some people swimming.

레몽의 친구는 해변의 끝에 나무로 지은 오두막에 살고 있었다. 그 집은 바위들에 기대어져 있었고 그것의 앞부분을 지탱하는 기초 말뚝들은 이미 물에 잠겨 있었다. 레몽은 우리를 소개했다. 그의 친구는 이름이 마송이라고 했다. 그는 키와 어깨의 덩치가 컸고 파리 액센트를 가진 동그랗고 귀여운 작은 여자와 함께 있었다. 그는 곧바로 우리에게 편하게 있으라고, 그가 그날 아침에 잡은 물고기로 만든 튀김요리가 있다고 말했다.

L’ami de Raymond habitait un petit cabanon de bois à l’extrémité de la plage. La maison était adossée à des rochers et les pilotis qui la soutenaient sur le devant baignaient déjà dans l’eau. Raymond nous a présentés. Son ami s’appelait Masson. C’était un grand type, massif de taille et d’épaules, avec une petite femme ronde et gentille, à l’accent parisien. Il nous a dit tout de suite de nous mettre à l’aise et qu’il y avait une friture de poissons qu’il avait pêchés le matin même.

레몽의 친구는 바닷가 한쪽 끝에 있는 작은 목조 별장에 살고 있었다. 집은 바위를 등지고 있었고, 전면을 떠받치고 있는 기초말뚝들은 벌써 물에 잠겨 있었다. 레몽은 우리를 소개했다. 친구의 이름은 마송이었다. 덩치가 크고 어깨가 튼튼하고 키가 큰 남자였는데, 파리 말씨를 쓰는 동글동글하고 상냥하고 키가 작은 여자와 함께 있었다. 이내 그는 우리에게 편하게 지내라고 권했고, 바로 그날 아침에 낚은 물고기로 생선튀김을 준비했다고 말했다.

Raymond’s friend lived in a little wooden bungalow at the far end of the beach. The back of the house rested up against the rocks, and the pilings that held it up in front went straight down into the water. Raymond introduced us. His friend’s name was Masson. He was a big guy, very tall and broad-shouldered, with a plump, sweet little wife with a Parisian accent. Right off he told us to make ourselves at home and said that his wife had just fried up some fish he’d caught that morning.

나는 그에게 내가 얼마나 그의 집이 예쁘다고 생각하고 있는지를 말했다. 그는 나에게 그가 거기에서 토요일과 일요일 그리고 그의 모든 휴가의 날들을 보내러 온다고 알려주었다. “나의 아내는 사람들이 잘 지낸다” 라고 그가 덧붙였다. 바로 그때 그의 아내가 마리와 더불어 웃었다. 아마도 처음으로 나는 정말로 내가 결혼할 것이라고 생각했다.

Je lui ai dit combien je trouvais sa maison jolie. Il m’a appris qu’il y venait passer le samedi, le dimanche et tous ses jours de congé. « Avec ma femme, on s’entend bien », a-t-il ajouté. Justement, sa femme riait avec Marie. Pour la première fois peut-être, j’ai pensé vraiment que j’allais me marier.

I told him how nice I thought his house was. He told me that he spent Saturdays and Sundays and all his days off there. “With my wife, of course,” he added. Just then his wife was laughing with Marie. For the first time maybe, I really thought I was going to get married.

Ich sagte ihm, wie sehr mir sein Haus gefiele. Er antwortete, er verbringe hier den Samstag, den Sonntag und alle seine freien Tage. «Mit meiner Frau, wir verstehen uns gut», fügte er hinzu. Seine Frau lachte gerade mit Maria. Vielleicht zum erstenmal dachte ich ernstlich daran, zu heiraten.
