One experienced tanguera had some interesting point to tell me. It seems so rare an occaision to hear a woman's idea about other women's dance!
We were talking about personal technique, and how it is evolving here. She seemed to think the men were growing at a faster rate, and teaching women to follow "steps". But, most importantly, she found tangueras to be lazy in their dance, letting the men create it for them. In addition, they are happy to follow "steps" without any balance or quality of movement.
I found this a Most Interesting Point, for then she compared tangueras to salseras. Many have tried to mix the two, but one always wins out.
Salseras spend hours looking at themselves in the mirror, getting the most efficient and elegant movements, and discovering personally where her adornos might go. They find their balance. Salseras develop an intimacy with the music, whereas the tangueras get pushed around like shopping carts by the men. Salseras require the men to Look Good.
I was so impressed by her observation, I immediately went on 'tour' of some salsa clubs. Surely, there were many people in front of the mirrors.
Are tangueras doing this? Where?
The contrary argument might say that tango is more challenging, because the techiniques are less obvious. Also, there really is no 'basic step' to practice. However, I counter, when is the last time there was a Ladies Technique class led by someone who has gone abroad? Where is the demand for Basics? As far as I can see, the observation is dead on: The tangueros keep trying crazier things, hunching their backs, and the ladies jump through their hoops. Oh yeah, and there is tango music playing, too.
첫댓글Well, I'm sorry for you to hear that for the first time. I think Tango takes more time for a lady to get on a certain level finding her own personality in her dancing than others, normally I mean according to what I have experienced and heard from other Tangueras. Why don't you Tangueros think
you yourself have treated Tangueras that way? Why don't you guys be much more careful about what Tangueras try to say in dancing or how they feel? Why do you think communication in dancing should start from you guys? As far as ladies are more considered as followers than men, there should be
Actually, veritas, I agree with you. Personally, I feel there is too much emphasis on 'leading' for the men and 'following' for the ladies. I believe there is a more passive role to be explored for the men, and a more active role to be explored by the ladies.
I am confused. 1. Are adronments directly related to tangueras' being active in theier dance, making conversations, suggesting somthing about what thangueras feel? 2. If I let my legs go as they go(instead of trying to think what i am going to do), is it that
My feeling is that 'active' tangueras feel in music and in the embrace a freedom to express and adorn, yet without backleading. The leader creates a space, the follower fills it. There is more to it. Self-conscious dancers are missing the other person.
Self-conscious dancers are missing the other person-->This is exactly what I'm saying. Don't you see many more self-conscious or even self-centered men in Milonga than any other daing places? I don't think Tangueras' reaction or activeness has to be necessarily shown as adorning, but
it could be everything from ladies. When asked to teach a lady gruop voleos and things like that, I just told a long-term Tango guy that all the ladies' game depends on how much space a man gives a lady and how she finds the space from music or between him and herself. In other words, it is all
about each individual's unique way to communicate. Unfortunately, I think those adorning actions sometimes mess up Tango. I feel it is a kind of second-beginner level though. Well, I don't know what you try to share with Korean Tango people there. Because you said you somehow agreed with me, I just
