As these professionals become part of your work world, it will help to become comfortable with the flat-rate payment method. It may not be perfect – no method is – but it does make sense and it does offer some advantages.

Say it's a brake job, and the flat rate, based on the auto mechanic union pay scale, is set at $500. If the job takes the mechanic three hours, the customer pays the mechanic $500. But if the mechanic works fast and finishes in two hours, the customer still pays $500. The flat rate guarantees it.

  From the mechanic's point of view, the flat rate offers a sure thing. And if he's eyeing similar brake jobs that are lining up behind the one in his shop, he has an incentive to work efficiently so that he can maximize his earnings.

So is ensuring that word spreads to others in the marketplace, which comes in handy as a business grows and prospers. If they “overpay” in the process, so be it.
