A Global Connection:
Summit Academy Students Train with Korean Grandmaster
Lorain, OH - June 16, 2025
- Students in Summit Academy's summer sword and reading camp participated in a once-in-a-lifetime virtual class with Grandmaster Kim Jeong Seong, founder ofJinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, live from Korea.
Haedong Kumdo is a Korean sword art that emphasizes precision, discipline, and mental clarity.
Throughout the week, students practiced foundational cuts, stances, and drills with wooden swords, learning not only physical skills but also focus, self-control, and cultural respect.
When Grandmaster Kim appeared on screen, the students stood tall and offered a traditionalHaedong Kumdo bow, silently showing their respect in the way of their art.
During the session, Grandmaster Kim emphasized three key principles of martial training: Focus. Breathing. Calmness.
The lesson was clear: true strength is not only in the sword, but in the mind and spirit behind it.
The students practiced remaining steady and calm-even while delivering loud, confident kihaps (spiritshouts), which rang out through the room with unity and intent.
"This experience was about more than martial arts," said instructor Ms. Lisa Kozak, who trained directly under Grandmaster Kim. "
"It was about self-control, awareness, and honoring our energy through movement."
Grandmaster Kim reminded us that clarity and presence are just as important as physical skill.
"A Global Connection: Summit Academy Students Train with Korean Grandmaster
Students were deeply impacted.
One reflected, "It felt powerful when we all yelled together, but Ialso liked when we were quiet and still.
Both felt strong in different ways."
And the journey isn't over. Grandmaster Kim will visit Lorain, Ohio this fall to teach the students in person on October 24,2025-a meaningful continuation of the connection sparked during the summer camp.
In addition, Ms. Kozak will host a public 3-day Haedong Kumdo seminar, led by Grandmaster Kim,taking place October 24-26, 2025, in the Summit Academy Lorain gymnasium.
Martial artists, instructors, and guests from across the country are expected to attend.
Registration is open through Eventbrite, and Ms. Kozak is currently seeking community sponsors to support the event, as she is personally responsible for the financial costs associated with Grandmaster Kim's travel and teaching.
This international connection-and the upcoming seminar-align beautifully with Summit Academy's mission to support the whole child.
Through literacy, movement, cultural awareness, and real-world engagement, students are discovering that learning stretches beyond the classroom and across the globe.
