Israel attacks Iranian missile production, air-defence sites
Israel carried out a more extensive attack in retaliation for Iran's 1 October ballistic missile attack than it did after the Iranian attack in April, when it knocked out a single S-300 air-defence system.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement on 26 October announcing the air force had carried out the expected attack on Iran overnight, saying it had targeted the Islamic Republic of Iran's ability to produce missiles that can reach Israel, as well air-defence capabilities that were intended to limit Israeli operations.
"Our message is very, very clear... any threat, anywhere, at any time, we know how to reach it," IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General HerzI Halevi said. "This message is now significantly reinforced. We used only a portion of our capabilities; we can do much more."
The IDF did not identify the specific targets or the weapons used against them, but said elements of 119 and 201 squadrons, both of which fly F-16l multirole fighters, participated in the operation. It also released a video of an F-15C from 133 Squadron taking off with three external fuel tanks, air-to-air missiles, and an electronic wartare pod.
Iran's General Staff of the Armed Forces released a statement saying Israeli aircraft had used Iraqi airspace to launch missiles with small warheads at radars on the border in llam and Khuzestan provinces, as well as around Tehran province. It credited its air defenders with mitigating the attack so that it only caused limited damage, including to radars that were being repaired. It named four members of its air-defence force who it said were killed in the attack.
Satellite imagery was released after the attack showing that buildings at the Parchin and Khojir weapons development and production facilities southeast and east of Tehran were destroyed in the attack. Low-resolution satellite imagery indicated that a building at the facility southeast of Shahroud may also have been attacked, as well as a probable radar site close to the Iragi border in llam province. The Shahroud facility is best known as the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps' space-launch site but also has an area for testing solid-propellant rocket motors.
The Iraqi government submitted a letter to the United Nations Security Council to protest Israel's violation of its airspace, while the Jordanian media cited a military source as saying no military aircraft crossed into the kingdom's airspace.

Analysis
Photographs and a video showed that at least one expended rocket motor came down sufficiently near the Iraqi city of Samarra that the golden dome on the Al-Askari Shrine could be seen in the background. This appeared to be identical to ones recovered further south in Iraq after Israel's attack on 19 April, which destroyed one of the radars for the S-300 deployed at Isfahan airbase.
These rocket motors are widely assumed to be from a type of air-launched ballistic missile that Israel has not revealed but could be associated with the Blue Sparrow target that it uses to test its ballistic missile defence systems.
The locations of the boosters recovered after both attacks indicated they were from weapons launched from the far south of Syria as they would have come down further to the north in Iraq if they were launched from further to the east, assuming the Israelis did not violate Jordanian airspace.
That would mean the weapon has a range of approximately 1,400 km, with the booster coming down roughly halfway from its target. The possible target at Shahroud is 325 km to the west of those at Parchin, which might account for the violation of Iraq's airspace.
