Verse of the Eighteen Great Arhats
The First Venerable One
Sitting in the lotus position, a slave of the Southern barbarians stands beside him.
The First Venerable One sits upright in the lotus position, and a slave of the Southern barbarians stands beside him. A messenger spirit bowed his head before, and the attendant took the book from him and delivered it to the Arhat.
The verse says:
The moon is bright and the stars are few; what is there and what is not? In the radiant East, only enlightenment exists. In the radiant East, there is only the Morning Star.
Ah! Your senior disciple and Acharya, appearing in the world on behalf of the Buddha, you are truly great disciples.
Ah! Your senior disciple and Acharya, appearing in the world on behalf of the Buddha, you are truly great disciples. The Second Venerable One sat in the lotus position with hands clasped; Manno held up a letter in front of him, and the old man opened it. Inside was a glass vase containing about ten relics. The Verse Says:
The Buddha is without birth or death, so passage and obstruction depend on man. Who among walls, walls, tiles, and pebbles is not the Dharma Body?
The Venerable One withdraws his hand and does not rise from his seat to show reverence; if he were to rise, what would become of his mind? The Third Venerable One
He sat upright, holding a black wooden nourishing table against his back; below him, a white-clad wood-bearer offered fruit, and an attendant received it on a tray.
The verse says:
I am not a mere figure; no one recognizes me. How could this snow-robed one possess a single eye?
The verse is recited as follows. I am not a person who expresses myself openly, so people do not know; how could this Seol-ui-ja possess such insight?
Since this Muhou knows how to offer fruit even while eating, why should I be ashamed before the great monkey? I say to Youzi (Liu Shengyuan): Do not hate the royal descendant.
The Fourth Venerable One sat sideways with three fingers bent and answered the barbarian's question, responding with calculations. Below is a barbarian slave holding a box, and a boy is playing with a turtle he has caught.
The Fourth Venerable One sits sideways and answers the barbarian's question by counting on three fingers; below, a barbarian slave is holding a box, and a boy is playing with a turtle he has caught.
The verse says:
"What did he ask?" He answered by counting.
"No one knows how to make three into seven.
Thunder stirs and wind blows within the span of a bent and extended finger." Observe the bright moon at the tip of my finger.
He recited as follows:
When a nobleman asked how many there were, the Venerable One calculated the number and answered; however, no one knew whether it was three or seven. The thunder ceased, and the wind began to blow in the time it takes to bend and straighten a single finger. Behold, the bright moon is at the tip of my finger.
The Fifth Venerable One
Sit facing the deep, turbulent pool, cradling his knees; as the Divine Maiden emerged from the water, the Barbarian Slave received the book. The Song says:
Form unites with the Dao, and the Dao is everywhere; why would one go to the Heavenly Palace or the Mansion of Ghosts?
O elegant and wondrous maiden, leaping upon the waves and streams. O divine horse, holding the robe, follows her.
Therefore, the following verse is sung:
Form unites with the Dao, and there is no place where the Dao is not present; why would one be blocked, whether going to the Heavenly Palace or the Mansion of Ghosts? Oh, that beautiful and strange woman leaping up on the waves, making her spirit her horse and her tail her cart, following by holding onto her collar.
