여러분은 취미는 무엇인지요?

제가 예전에는 이런 질문에 ‘음악감상/영화감상/자동차 드라이브/오토바이 드라이브 등’ 중에서 한 두 개 꺼내어 답변했었습니다. 지금은 이 중의 아무 것도 안하기도 하고 못하기도 합니다. (자동차 및 오토바이 등은 다 팔아서 못하고 있고 음악은 들을 수도 있는데 제 유투브 계정이 구글에 의해 삭제되고 나서는 유투브 자체를 잘 안하려고 노력 중이라서 음악 결과적으로 안듣게 됩니다)

오늘은 이런 개인적인 성향과 질문이 아니라 한 차원 넘어서, 왜 현대글로벌사회의 왜곡을 특히 한국사람들이 그동안 인식하지 못한 근본적인 원인을 말씀드리려는 차원에서 이야기합니다.

제가 생각한 답부터 말씀드리면, 소위 클래식이라는 서양의 음악이 너무 정교하게 발전되었고 미술도 유화 측면에서 거장들의 작품들이 서양세계에서 쏟아져서, 이 음악과 미술 외에 다른 서양인들이 하는 이야기도 아시아 입장에서 다 맞다고 무분별하게 받아들였기 때문입니다.

예를 들어 의인 몇 명이 있다면 그 도시를 구원하겠다는 성경 이야기가, 음악 및 미술 천재 몇 명이 있어서 결국 유럽이 현재와 같이 아메리카와 호주 대륙 그리고 하와이 등의 태평양 도서까지 확장하게 된 도구가 되었다는 게 저의 해석이 되겠습니다.

86학번인 제가 영화 ‘미션 (The Mission, 1986)’의 영화 음악 자체도 너무 좋아서 테이프 따로 사서 늘어질 때까지 들어면서 대학 시절 심취했는데, 지금 나이에 제가 깨달은 것은 영화음악 때문에 사실상 엄청난 역사 및 스토리 왜곡을 의도했던 서양 영화의 저의를 당시 보지못했습니다.

왜냐고요?

콜럼버스 신대륙 발견 당시 원주민 인구가 얼마인지 아십니까?

1492년 콜럼버스의 신대륙 발견 당시 아메리카 대륙의 원주민 인구는 학자들에 따라 800만 명에서 1억 명 이상까지 추정치가 매우 다양하지만, 20세기 말 많은 학자는 약 5천만 명 내외로 추정합니다. 당시 북아메리카에 100만 명, 중앙아메리카 300만 명, 남아메리카 900만 명 이상이 거주했던 것으로 추산되며, 유럽인 유입 후 질병과 학살로 인해 원주민의 약 90%가 감소했습니다.

엄청난 학살이 자행된 지구 역사가 이 영화에서는 완전히 왜곡시키며 우리를 세뇌시킨 도구가 당시 되었던 것입니다.

호주 대륙도 1788년 영국이 호주 대륙을 식민화할 당시 원주민(애버리진) 인구는 약 30만 명에서 최대 100만 명 내외로 추산되는데, 90%가 초기 유럽인들과의 접촉 이후 질병, 토지 강탈, 폭력 그리고 학살 등으로 사라진 것입니다.

자, 이쯤하고 예술과 미(美)를 바라보는 정동희의 시각 변화 결론을 하나 하나씩 말씀드리겠습니다.

첫째, 대학에서 바로 위와 같은 역사적 일이 벌어졌던 미국 등에서 유학하여 학위를 딴 분들이 한국 미술과 음악을 주도하는 현 상황은 결국 글로벌 측면에서 볼 때 아류 성격이 적지 않다는 측면에서, 향후 미래의 청사진은 다른 시도와 다른 시각이 필요해보입니다.

둘째, 미(美)를 바라보는 예술적 측면 뿐만 아니라 성형산업까지 확장된 현실세계의 미(美) 기준에 대한 시각에 대한 근본적인 고찰이 필요해보입니다.

무슨 이야기이냐 하면, 큰 코와 큰 눈이 성형산업에서 벤치마크되고 있다는 점은 결국 서양 여성이 아시아 여성들의 평균적인 유전적 얼굴형보다 더 아름답다는 왜곡부터 출발점이 형성되어 있습니다.

잠실 롯데월드에 입장하면 퍼레이드행사가 보통 하루에 2번 이상 벌어집니다. 20여년 전부터 그 퍼레이드행사에는 러시아 여성들이 행사도우미로 나오고 우리와 다른 이국적인 외모에 마치 86년 영화 미션을 보듯이 ‘저런 서양코와 서양 눈이 우리보다 더 아름다운 모양이다’고 사람들은 은근히 생각하게 만들었습니다. 그런데 제가 세계 역사를 저의 어려운 개인사를 통하여 체험하고 나니, 당초 유럽에만 있어야 할 뽀족한 코 사람들이 근현대사 동안 전세계를 사실상 장악하면서 숨겨진 이면 역사를 뒤늦게 깨닫게 되었습니다.

즉, 뽀죡하지 않은 코를 가진 한국 민족은 이들과 다르게 약탈의 역사가 적은 민족인 것입니다.

제가 역사가 토인비를 사춘기 때 너무 위대하게 우러러 보았는데, 지금 모든 걸 께달은 상황에서 다시 토인비의 이야기를 보면 86년 영화 미션처럼 완전 한쪽 이야기만 하면서 전체를 말하는 것인양 한 일종의 왜곡 이야기의 다른 버전들이었습니다.

제가 왜 이런 이야기를 하느냐 하면, 한국 일부 여성들이 성형에 의존하여 자신의 과거 외모와 다른 성공을 한 뒤에 그 벤치마크 대상인 큰 코 민족의 근본적인 근현대사에서 나타난 일방성을 희한하게 후천적으로 같이 동반하여 사람이 성형전과 다르게 급변하는 사례들이 심심찮게 발생되고 있기 때문입니다.

다시 말씀드리면, 아시아가 앞으로 살아남기 위해서는 단순히 IT발전의 추종만으로는 반쪽 전략이며, 예술과 미(美)를 바라보는 측면에서 유럽의 클래식 음악과 미술이 결과적으로 세계 팽창의 도구 역할을 종교와 같이 하였고, 그러기 때문에 예술과 미(美)를 바라보는 측면에서 그 결과물인 미국 풍토를 여과 없이 전달만 하려는 수준은 이 굴곡의 역사를 새롭게 재창조하는데 걸림돌만 될 뿐이라는 사실에 대한 깨달음이 한국 문화예술계에 특히 필요해 보입니다.

저처럼 영화 미션을 해석할 수 있는 다른 시각들이 특히 맹목적인 서양 클래식 음악의 전달에 매달리는 대학 커리큐럼부터 생각해보는 시도로 이어질 때, 아시아가 근현대적으로 부족했던 ‘예술과 미(美)를 바라보는 시각 재조정’ 작업으로 이어질 수 있겠습니다.

What are your hobbies?
I used to answer this question by picking one or two things: "listening to music/watching movies/driving a car/riding a motorcycle." Now, I either don't do any of these things or I can't do them. (I sold my car and motorcycle, so I can't do them. I can listen to music, but since my YouTube account was deleted by Google, I've been trying to avoid YouTube altogether, so I don't listen to music anymore.)
Today, I'd like to talk about something more than just personal inclinations and questions. I want to go beyond that and address the fundamental causes of the distortions in modern global society, which have been overlooked by Koreans and Asians in particular.
To give you my own answer, the so-called classical music of the West has developed so elaborately, and in the field of art, the works of masters in oil painting have been pouring out from the Western world, so we have blindly accepted everything Westerners say, other than music and art, as being correct from an Asian perspective.
For example, my interpretation would be that the biblical story of a city being saved by a few righteous people was instrumental in Europe's expansion into the Americas, Australia, and Pacific Islands, including Hawaii, thanks to a few musical and artistic geniuses.
I entered college in 1986, and I loved the film score of the movie “The Mission” (1986) so much that I bought a separate tape and listened to it until it wore out. I was so absorbed in it during my college years, but what I realized now is that I didn’t see the true intention of Western films at the time, which was to distort history and the story so drastically because of the film score.
Why?

Estimates of the indigenous population of the Americas at the time of Columbus's discovery in 1492 vary widely, ranging from 8 million to over 100 million, but by the end of the 20th century, many scholars estimated it to be around 50 million. It is estimated that at the time, North America was home to 1 million people, Central America 3 million, and South America 9 million. Following the arrival of Europeans, disease and massacres reduced the indigenous population by approximately 90%.
When the British colonized the Australian continent in 1788, the Aboriginal population was estimated to have ranged from around 300,000 to as many as one million. However, nearly 90% of this population disappeared after contact with early Europeans, due to disease, land theft, violence, and massacre.

Now, let me share with you the conclusions of Zheng Dong-hee's shifting perspective on art and beauty, one by one.

First, the current situation in which Korean art and music are being led by those who studied and earned degrees in countries like the United States, where historical events like the one mentioned above took place, ultimately has a somewhat imitative nature from a global perspective. Therefore, the blueprint for the future seems to require different attempts and perspectives.
Second, a fundamental rethinking of the aesthetic perspective on beauty, extending beyond the aesthetic perspective to the real-world beauty standards that extend to the plastic surgery industry, seems necessary.
What I mean is that the plastic surgery industry's benchmarking of large noses and eyes stems from the distortion that Western women are more beautiful than the average genetically shaped Asian woman.
When you enter Lotte World in Jamsil, you'll usually see a parade at least twice a day. For over 20 years, Russian women have been appearing as event assistants in these parades. Their exotic appearance, reminiscent of the 1986 film Mission, has made people secretly think, "Those Western noses and eyes are more beautiful than ours."
However, after experiencing world history through my own difficult personal history (the state-level atrocities led by current Australian Attorney General Michelle Rowland and others), I've come to realize the hidden, hidden history of how those with pointed noses, originally intended to be confined to Europe, have virtually dominated the entire world during modern and contemporary history. In other words, Koreans, with their blunt noses, have a lesser history of plunder than these people.
I looked up to the historian Toynbee as a great man during my adolescence, but now that I have realized everything, when I look back at Toynbee's story, it is like the 1986 movie The Mission, where he tells only one side of the story while pretending to tell the whole story. It is a different version of a distorted story.
The reason I'm saying this is because some Korean women have resorted to plastic surgery to achieve success that is different from their past appearance, and then strangely, they also acquire the fundamental one-sidedness of the modern and contemporary history of the big-nosed nation, which is the benchmark for them, and there are frequent cases where people change drastically compared to before the surgery.
In other words, for Asia to survive in the future, simply following IT development is a half-baked strategy. From the perspective of art and beauty, European classical music and fine art ultimately served as tools for global expansion, much like religion.
Therefore, it seems especially necessary for the Korean and Asian cultural arts world to realize that ‘the level of simply conveying the American culture as a result of art and beauty in an unfiltered manner’ will only become an obstacle to recreating this turbulent history.
When other perspectives, like mine, who can interpret the film's mission, begin to rethink university curricula, particularly those obsessed with the blind transmission of Western classical music, it can lead to a "recalibration of perspectives on art and beauty," something Asia has lacked in modern and contemporary times.
