Hello, everybody!

It's good to be with you again.

오늘은 제가 미국 여러 곳을 여행하면서 찍은 사진을 몇 장 가지고 왔습니다.

Oh, these are great pictures.  But there's graffiti all over these pictures that you have taken.

(아, 아주 멋진 사진들이군요.  그렇지만 이 사진들에는 낙서가 가득하군요.)

낙서를 'graffiti'라고 하지요?

It's called graffiti.

It's spelled G-R-A-F-F-I-T-I.

And it's pronounced graffiti.

'graffiti'는 'graffito'의 복수 형태입니다.  그렇지만 'graffito'라고 말하는 경우는 거의 없고 'graffiti'가 주로 사용되고 있습니다.

미국에서는 낙서라고 해서 그냥 작은 펜으로 조그맣게 하는 낙서가 아니지요.  가스 분사식 페인트 분무기를 이용해서 글씨나 그림을 멀리서도 보일 수 있게 크게 그리지요.  건물 전체가 온갖 낙서로 가득한 곳도 있고, 완전히 낙서로 뒤덮인 자동차들도 있고요, 교량이나 건축물이 수백 미터 거리에서도 볼 수 있게 대형 낙서로 가득 채워져 있는 경우도 많습니다. 

그런데 왜 이렇게 낙서를 하는 걸까요?

Well, there're a number of reasons why people do graffiti. 

(사람들이 낙서를 하는 이유는 여러 가지가 있습니다.)

Gang members like to spray-paint either their names or symbols of the gang that they're in. 

(폭력단원들이 자신들의 명칭이나 소속 폭력단체의 상징 같은 것을 가스 분사식 페인트로 뿌려서 그리는 걸 좋아합니다.)

Or they like to spray-paint messages to other people that they've been there.

(아니면, 자신들이 그 곳에 다녀갔다는 사실을 다른 사람들한테 알리는 내용을 가스 분사식 페인트로 그리는 것을 좋아합니다.)

단순한 낙서 이상의 의미를 지니는 'graffiti'를 예술의 한 형태로 보기도 하지요?

Yes, sometimes there's a form of art you see in graffiti.

(네, 때로 'graffiti' 속에서 예술의 한 종류를 볼 수 있습니다.)

By spray-painting people make a mural on the side of the building and draw a pretty scene.

(가스분사식 페인트를 이용해서 사람들은 건물의 벽면에 아름다운 풍경이 있는 벽화를 그리거나 다른 소재들을 그립니다.)

* mural: 벽에 그린, 벽화 (a mural painting)

So, it can be very beautiful as well.

(따라서 'graffiti'는 매우 아름다울 수도 있습니다.)

Graffiti could be a form of vandalism, especially if people are spray-paint their name, or bad words on the sides of beautiful buildings.

(낙서는 공공기물을 파괴하는 밴덜리즘이 될 수도 있습니다.  특히 아름다운 건물 벽면에 자신들의 이름이나 나쁜 말들을 페인트로 그릴 경우 그렇습니다.)  * vandalism: 공공기물, 문화, 예술의 파괴 행위

And sometimes people do the graffiti on places such as trains or places that are historic. 

(그런데 때로 사람들은 기차나 역사적인 장소들에 낙서를 합니다.)

그러니까 'graffiti'는 'vandalism'이라고 해서 공공기물 파괴행위가 될 수도 있지요.

[영어 표현]

Graffiti can either be art or vandalism.

(낙서는 예술일 수도 공공기물 파괴 행위일 수도 있습니다.)

과거에 뉴욕 시의 지하철은 낙서로 가득했었지요.  보기에도 좋지 않고, 이용객들한테 혐오감이나 공포감을 주었었는데요, 지금은 많이 개선이 되었지요.

New York city used to be the home of graffiti.

(뉴욕 시는 낙서의 본고장이었습니다.)

And there was lots of graffiti all over the city. 

But an effort's being made to clean up the city.

(그리고 도시 전지역에 낙서가 많았습니다.  보기 흉했지요.  그렇지만 도시를 정화하려는 노력이 기울여지고 있습니다.)

미국의 경우 낙서를 지우는데 매년 60억 달러라는 막대한 비용이 소요된다고 합니다.  60억 달러는 한국 돈으로 약 8조원이 넘습니다.

제가 들고 있는 이 사진에는 하얀 색 승합차가 한 대 있는데요.

Yes, this car has graffiti all over the side.  And I would say that that would probably not be art.

(네, 그 자동차는 옆면이 온갖 낙서로 가득 뒤덮여 있습니다.  그 건 아마 예술이라고 말하기는 어려울 것 같습니다.)

It would be more like vandalism.

(그 건 밴덜리즘에 가까운 것 같습니다.)

It's not very beautiful.  It's just words and it's kind of messy looking.

* vandalism: 도시의 공공시설이나 문화, 예술 등을 파괴하는 행위, 야만적인 행위, 파괴 행위를 말합니다. 

왜 차에다 낙서를 저렇게 해놓은 건지 모르겠군요.

I don't know.  I'm glad it's not my car.

(모르겠습니다.  제 자동차가 아니라서 다행입니다.)

[영어 표현]

Billions of dollars are spent to clean up graffiti.

(낙서를 지우기 위해 수십억 달러가 사용됩니다.)

어떤 관광지에 가보면 낙서가 되어 있는 곳도 있더군요.

아름다운 자연이나, 유적지나 유물, 공공시설에 낙서를 하는 행위는 파괴행위이지요.

It is.  Graffiti could be a form of vandalism.

(그렇습니다.  낙서는 파괴행위의 한 형태일 수' 있습니다.)

And I think that's more common than the beautiful kind of artwork that you see.

('graffiti'가 아름다운 예술 작품이라기 보다는 파괴 행위인 경우가 보다 일반적입니다.)

LA 인근에서 앰트랙 기차를 타고 가면서 찍은 사진인데요.  여기도 낙서가 심하지요?

And there's this beautiful historic bridge, but it's got graffiti all painted at the bottom and base of the bridge.

(역사가 있는 아름다운 다리가 있는데 바닥과 교각에 낙서가 가득하군요.)

I understand that a lot of people get a sense of achievement by being able to create graffiti in places that are hard to reach. 

(많은 사람들은 접근하기 어려운 장소에 낙서를 할 수 있다는 것으로 성취감을 갖는 것으로 이해합니다.)

The higher, the better.  And if it's difficult to get at, there's more achievement or sense of achievement from that.

(높을수록 좋다는 것이죠.  접근하기 어려우면 거기에 보다 큰 성취감이 있다는 겁니다.)

Los Angeles is trying a little different approach.  They're trying to plant quick growing vines that take very little water and grow very quickly so that they'll cover buildings or sides of walls or places where people try to put the graffiti.

(로스엔젤레스에서는 좀 다른 접근법을 시도하고 있습니다.  사람들이 낙서를 하는 건물이나 벽면들을 덮을 수 있도록 아주 적은 수분을 가지고도 빨리 자라는 넝쿨 식물들을 심고 있습니다.)

아주 좋은 생각이군요.

Yes, it is.  And it's pretty.

(네, 그렇습니다.  그리고 아름답기도 하고요.)

Thank you! it is very good for me to improve the 잡학(雜學) (what do you spell it in 영어? erudite person or Renaissance man?) ( English on the 5060 members) We are easy to find out ugly or pretty graffiti on the wall while we traveled 미국 케나다 호주 and 유럽.

Some places are so much beautiful as many people accepted that. But it is hard for me to see graffiti in the 부자촌. "New york used to be the home of graffiti" I have been in there for a couple of days, so I do not know the New York detail of alley in downtown. but when it comes to graffiti, The Detroit in Michigan should be capable of getting a gold medal in this part, so I show you the picture on Detroit.
