2. Sentence (3a) is ungrammatical because the NP 'his frying-pan' is the argument of verb'persuaded'. So, it should be the object of the verb. Plus, the NP 'his frying-pan' should be a rational entity because selection restriction holds the verb 'persuade' and the NP complement 'his frying-pan.' Sentence (3b) is grammatical because the argument of verb 'consider' is the proposition, and the NP'his frying-pan' is the subject of the to-infinitival clause and the argument of the predicate'be indispensable'. So, in (3b), selection restriction holds between predicate 'be indispensable' and the NP'his frying-pan'.
4. Sentence (c),(e), and (f) show the same pattern be as sentence (1) because the subject of main clauses aquire their thematic role from the predicate of the complement clauses.
5. Sentence (e) and (f) are (1b)-type because tje subjects in (e) and (f) are not selected by the verbs of main clauses, but ones of the to-infinitival clauses.
7. In the sentence (4), the NP'John' is assigned Agent role by the verb'win' of to-infinitival clause, and the NP'John' is assigned a nominative case by the tense. Plus, the NP 'the race' is assigned Theme role by the verb'win' of to-infinitival clause, and the NP'the race' is assigned an accusative case by the verb'win'.
8. The sentence (5) is syntactically well-formed because 'himself' is bound by its antecedent 'Tom'. First, 'Tom' occurs originally at the subject position of to-infinitival clause. So, 'Tom' is assigned agent role by the verb'brag', and it binds reflexive'himself'. Second, in order to be assigned the case, 'Tom' moves to the subject position of the main clause, so it can be assigned a nominative case by the tense.
9. The sentence (iii) and (v) are containing unaccusative verbs. In these sentences, the subjects of unergatve verbs originate in the complement position of the verbs. So, these verbs allows a word order called there inversion like this:
(iii) There remained several students in the school library.
(v) There arose several complications in the medical experiment.
10. The suffix -er combines with unergative verbs, but the suffix -er doens't combine with unaccusative verbs.
11. The sentences (a) and (d) are ungrammatical sentences because these sentences are middle sentences, so the NP of Agent role does not appear superficially. However, in the sentence (a), by-phrase occurs, and the agent-oriented expression 'deliberately' occurs in the sentence(d).
12. The sentence (7) is ungrammatical bacause the passive past participle of the verb'believe' has the same structure of the predicate 'likely'. Therefore, it can take a non-finite clause complement, but it cannot allow an NP like 'Bill' to emmediately follow it.
13. The sentences (a),(c), and (d) are ungrammatical because in the sentence (a), the cognition verb'understand' appears. And in the sentence (c) and (d), adgectival get passives appear, so in these sentences, the participle can be premodified by the expression 'a little' related degree.
14 The sentece (2b) is grammatical and (2a) is ungrammatical. This is becuase the expletive 'there; does not have theta roles, so it cannot occur in the subject position of the tag question.
15. The sentense (6) is ungrammatical because the NP following the verb'tell' is the object of the verb. So, it is assigned thematic role by the verb'tell', But, the expleltive 'there' has no thematic role. Also, the sentence (7) is ungrammatical because the NP following the verb is the argument of the verb 'tell', and it should be a rational entity. But the NP'the tree' is not a rational entity, so it cannot be object of the ation 'tell'.
16. (3b) and (3d) are ungrammatical. First, in the sentence(3b), the verb'persuade' has two internal arguments. One is the object of the verb, and the infinitival clause. So, the NP following the verb'persuade' is the object, and a subject idiom chunk cannot be used as its idiomatic meaning. Second, in (3d), the NP following the verb'order' is the object of the verb, so it should be assigned a thematic role. But, the expletive there cannot have thematic roles.
첫댓글 엄청 많네요 ^^ 내일(수) 강의 마치고 찬찬히 보겠습니다. ^^
ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 감사합니당!!^^ 교수님 강의 정말 잘 듣고있습니다 매번 최고의 강의 감사드려요
#2. "it should be the object of the verb. Plus," 이 부분과 "the argument of verb 'consider' is the proposition, and" 이 부분은 삭제하셔도 될 것 같습니다. 답안이 너무 길기때문에 최대한 간결하게 쓰는 연습해보세요.
#4. 4. Sentence (c),(e), and (f) show the same pattern be as sentence (1) => be 는 오타인가요?
because the subject of main clauses aquire their thematic role from the predicate of the complement clauses.
- Plus, the NP ‘the race’ is assigned a thematic role and Accusative case by the verb ‘win’ -> 이렇게 줄여서 표현했으면 좋겠습니다.
#8.
(1) 둘째 줄에 to-infinitival clause사용 주의하셔야 해요. 전체 문장에 infinitival clasue가 두개 있어요. 그러니 the lowest clause를 사용하는게 좋습니다.
(2) “So, 'Tom' is assigned agent role” -> agent 명시하지 마세요. 그냥 a thematic role
(3) Movement constraint에 대한 언급이 없습니다. (큰 감점 사항이예요 ㅜㅜ)
#9. 전체적인 답안 좋습니다. 표현하나 말씀드립니다. 자동사 뒤에서 생성되는 NP의 위치를 complement 위치라고 하는게 다소 이상합니다. 그냥 동사뒤라고 안전하게 표현하면 좋겠습니다
in the complement position ->in the postverbal position
#10 답안 좋습니다.
#11. 답안 구성은 좋습니다. 다만 (c) 문장도 비문입니다. ~하기위하여 라고 해석되는 to keep them happy도 agent-oriented expresseion입니다.
Thematic role 앞에 ‘a’ 넣어 주세요
#16 (3d) 문장 설명에서 expletive의 의미역 뿐만 아니라 subject 자리에 위치해야 한다는 언급도 꼭(*2) 해주세요.
