● 참되게 사는 사람에게 두려움이 없다.(There is no fear in those who live true.) ●

[효암(孝菴) 박규택(公認 大法師)]

거지에게 생일날 없고 도둑에게 양심 없다. 열심히 일하는 사람에게 밤과 낮이 없고 참되게 사는 사람에게 두려움이 없다.(A beggar has no birthday and a thief has no conscience. There is no night or day for the hardworking, and there is no fear for the true living.)

​그리고 실직자(失職者, an unemployed person)에게 봉급(俸給, salary)날 없듯 게으른 사람에게 돌아오는것 없다.(And nothing comes back to the lazy like no payday for the unemployed.)

​어리석은 개미(a pismire)는 자신의 몸이 작아 사슴(deer)처 럼 빨리 달릴 수 없음을 한탄(恨歎, bemoan)하고, 똑똑한 개미는 자신의 몸이 작아 사슴의 몸에 붙어 달릴 수 있음을 자랑으로 생각한다.(Stupid ants lament that their bodies are small and cannot run as fast as deer, Smart ants are proud that they have a small body and can run on the deer's body.)

​어리석은 사람은 자신의 단점을 들여다 보며 슬퍼하고 똑똑한 사람은 자신의 장점을 찾아내어 자랑한다.(A foolish man looks into his shortcomings and grieves, and a smart man finds his strengths and boasts them.)

화내는 얼굴은 아는 얼굴이라도 낯설고 웃는 얼굴은 모르는 얼굴이라도 낯설지 않다.(An angry face is unfamiliar even if you know it, and a smiling face is not unfamiliar even if you don't know it.)

​찡그린 얼굴은 예쁜 얼굴이라도 보기 싫고 웃는 얼굴은 미운 얼굴이라도 예쁘다.(I don't want to see a pretty face with a frown, and a smiling face is pretty with an ugly face.)

고운 모래를 얻기 위해선 고운체가 필요하듯 고운 얼굴을 만들기 위해선 고운 마음이 필요하네.(Just as you need a fine body to get fine sand, you need a fine heart to make a fine face.)

​매끄러운 나무를 얻기 위해서 잘 드는 대패가 필요하듯 멋진 미래를 얻기 위해선 현재의 노력이 필요하네. 욕심 많은 사람은 자기 연장(tool)을 두고 남의 연장을 빌려 쓴다.(Just as you need a good plane to get a smooth tree, you need the present effort to get a great future. Greedy people borrow other people's tools for their own.)

​그러다 그만 자기 연장을 녹슬게 하고 만다. 어리석은 사람은 자기 혼자 힘으로 서지 않고 남에게 기대선다. 그러다 그만 자기 혼자 설 힘을 잃고 만다.(Then he stops rusting his tools. Stupid people lean on others, not on their own. Then, he loses the power to stand alone.)

​잘 드는 칼도 오래 두면 녹이 슬어 날이 무디어지듯 날카로운 도끼도 오래 두면 녹이 슬어 날이 무디어지듯, 그리움도 오래 두면 저절로 녹이 슨다.(Just as a sharp axe will rust if you leave it for a long time, just as a sharp axe will rust if it is left for a long time, If you leave your longing for a long time, it melts on its own.)

​고민(苦悶, worry)과 고통(苦痛, suffering)도 오래 두면 녹이 슬어 저절로 무디어진다. 새 옷을 입었다고 자랑하지 말고 그 옷이 더럽혀지지 않도록 노력해야 한다.(If you leave your worries and pain for a long time, it rusts and dulls itself. Don't brag about your new clothes and try not to get them dirty.)

​남보다 잘 났다고 자랑하지 말고
그 모습이 추해지지 않도록 노력해야 한다.(Don't brag about being better than others and try not to get ugly.)

앞 집엔 옷이 많은데 옷걸이가 하나도 없고 뒷 집엔 옷걸이가 많은데 옷이 하나도 없다.(There are many clothes in the front house, but there are no hangers, and there are many hangers in the back house, but there are no clothes.)

​나누어 쓰면 좋겠는데 그러지를 않아 앞집 사람은 늘 구겨진 옷을 입고 다니고 뒷집 사람은 늘 벌거벗고 다닌다.(It would be nice to share it, but not, so the first wife always wears wrinkled clothes and the second wife always wears naked.)

옷은 입을수록 몸이 따뜻하고 욕심은 벗을수록 마음이 따뜻하다.(The more you wear clothes, the warmer your body is, and the warmer your heart is.)

​옷은 오래 입을수록 그 두께가 얇아지고
욕심은 오래 걸칠수록 그 두께가 두꺼워진다.(The longer you wear clothes, the thinner the thickness becomes, and the longer you wear greed, the thicker the thickness becomes.)

가진 것 없는 사람들의 설움은 가진 사람들의 외면에서 생기고 못난 사람들의 설움은 잘난 사람들의 외면에서 생긴다.(The sorrow of the hapless comes from the outer face of the haves, and the sorrow of the ugly comes from the outer face of the haves.)

​혼자 사는 사람들의 설움은 여럿이 사는 사람들의 외면에서 생기고 아픈 사람들의 설움은 건강한 사람들의 외면에서 생긴다.(The sorrow of living alone arises from the outer appearance of many people, and the sorrow of sick people arises from the outer appearance of healthy people.)
