As Christians, we often try to be Christlike through our own effort.
But no matter how hard we try, we can't defeat our sinful tendencies on our own.
When we walk in the Spirit, though,
the grace of God teaches us to say no to our sinful human natures /so we can live in victory.
Let’s say, 'no' to sin today and 'yes' to Jesus and His grace!

[Music] you're Alpha, you're Alpha and Omega
38:34
you can stand right where you are this morning it happened the same way uh Alvin prayed about
when you come to church it's not the same just like the weather
some days bright and shiny other days cloudy gloomy rain
38:47
life is that way
sometimes pressures question marks
38:53
you're in between
you got to make decisions
Financial pressure pressure mental emotional family
39:01
spiritual and that's why God said my house shall be called a house of prayer
when people come to God's house they're not to be entertained
they're to be led into a place where their heart can go up to God
and say God lift it lift me
I noticed and the same thing happened this morning at 9:
39:20
when you heard them sing, 'the lifter of my head'
that's from the Psalms
God lifts your head when you're down
God lifts your head
he gives you Joy and peace
39:26
even though around you it's just... everything's crazy
so we're going to sing this song
and if you're here today and you're in one of those in between places
it's just hard right now
39:40
and you need God to lift your head, lift your soul, increase your faith
39:46
just come up out of your seat and come here to the front
if we can't do that, why even have church?
we can pray one for another
39:53
so just come out and we're going to be singing
as you come from the balcony,
come from New Jersey, (뉴욕 주 옆 허드슨 강 건너 뉴 저지 주에서도 교회 출석함)
come from everywhere you are
40:00
we're going to pray
we're going to sing and God's going to lift your head
40:06
okay, let's sing it along with the choir
you are Alpha and Omega
40:13
and you need a word from the Lord
we worship you our Lord
40:33
you are worthy to be praised
40:42
Let's help them and sing everyone, a little faster
40:52
and you are Alpha and Omega
40:59
we worship you, our Lord
41:06
you are worthy to be praised
41:15
let's lift our hands and our arms our voice
we give you all the glory
we worship you, our Lord
41:39
you are worthy to be praised
41:48
one more time, sing everyone
we give you all the glory
we worship you
you are worthy to be praised
42:23
Father God we thank you that we can run to you,
not come to you, run to you
42:31
when everything is swirling around us
we're not sure where our feet are landing
everything seems to be chaotic around us
42:38
we thank you there's peace in the midst of the storm
you're able to lift our heads
you're able to get focus for us
so we don't feel overwhelmed
we will not be overwhelmed
we will overcome
42:51
we will not be overwhelmed because you are with us today
and you're the lifter of our head
I pray not for myself but for every brother and sister here in the front
lift their head up in the Name of Christ Lord
and give them joy in believing
and help them navigate through this situation whatever it might be
for we pray it in Jesus name, and everyone said, ' amen.'
43:17
the choir has been such a blessing today, haven't they?
come on, let's clap for them
you may go
43:29
thank you
Lord, would you bless the offering that has to be taken
Bless the people who give online
we need your help today as always
bless the giving that happens at the door as they go out, the physical offerings given
43:48
but Lord, you are Jehovah-Jireh (여호와 이레; 여호와께서 준비/공급하신다)
you're our provider
everything I have comes from you
43:54
everything we own comes from you
help us to share and be a blessing for the kingdom
we pray in jesus' name and everyone said, 'amen.'
so the offering is taken as you leave
the offering is taken online if that's the way you want to do it.
(코로나 전에는 설교 전에 헌금순서가 있었지만 코로나 후에는 교회 입구에서 헌금하게 됨)
44:11
so nice to be with you
so happy
Sermon 설교
44:18
and the day is miserable but the Lord is here today.
Isn't he with us?
so I want to take you on... by the way
that Friday, February the 28th, that's going to be so special that night.
44:32
how many have ever heard live Steeve Mcguader singing, 'Come Jesus Come'
44:38
lift your hands...
is that amazing?
this guy has a voice bigger than this Auditorium, just huge,
44:44
wonderful testimony was on drugs, drug dealing
44:51
although his father was a pastor,
see, there you go.
his father was a pastor.
44:56
and he saw him preach and then he would go home and see him beat his mother.
how do you get that together?
right?
45:05
so he just went out, crazy.
and now he's back with the Lord.
wrote a great song.
Babby Mason Tanda and The Choir,
they're going to be doing a video that night.
it's going to be very special.
so make sure you're here 7 o'clock
come early.
um now that's a good thing
that just came in my head there.
Steeve Mcguader's father and how he had to navigate through that.
so let's talk about uh something very close to home, very needed.
45:40
I think, like, they say every Christian should read 1 Corinthians 13 once every month...
you should be pondering this subject almost every day
45:47
so Paul is writing a letter to the churches in Galatia
and Galatia is an area in the New Testament
and today it's Southern Turkey.
46:01
and he went on a first missionary journey and he started churches in Galatia.
46:07
he was with his friend Barnabas.
he started churches there. 46:13
and now years later he's writing a letter back to those churches
which were very dear to him.
46:19
why?
because a problem had risen in the churches.
what was the problem?
46:26
people had come after Paul.
remember, no written Bibles,
no physical Church buildings.
46:31
people had come after him and said that his preaching was wrong
and it caused trouble in the church
and some were persuaded by this new doctrine, this new gospel.
so Paul's major concern, as he writes;
listen, I gave you the true gospel.
repent of your sin.
-we're all sinners-
repent of it and put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
and you will be saved.
47:03
believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be saved-
that's the message.
47:12
anyone who adds something to that changes the gospel
and does a very bad thing.
47:17
so they were these Judaizers.
they came from Jerusalem and they were Jewish.
47:23
they were saying to the Gentile converts; yo, you you're not a Christian.
47:29
if you just repent of your sin and put your faith in Christ,
get baptized and come to the church...
no, no, no, you got to do more.
47:36
you got to be circumcised, all the men.
Paul never said that.
no, he doesn't.
47:42
Paul didn't understand everything.
you're not going to go to heaven unless you're circumcised.
Jesus was circumcised.
47:47
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, all the 12 disciples were Jewish.
47:53
they were circumcised, everyone.
you you're not going to go, like a gentile, into heaven.
when Paul heard about that he got very very very upset, very upset.
48:04
and one of the strongest languages he ever uses is in Galatians
where he says, um anyone who preaches another gospel,
let him be cursed,
by just adding that
you know like people add today
you can be a Christian if you believe in Jesus
but you have to worship on Saturday
no, you have to worship on Sunday- it's the only day.
48:25
you have to join our denomination.
you uh have to abide by our um standards of um of clothes or apparel, whatever.
48:41
and once you add something
you're now saying Jesus isn't enough.
that's bad.
(뭔가 더하는 것은 우주 전체보다 크신 예수님이 부족하다는 얘기라 신성모독이다)
48:48
he also uses stronger language where he says,
these men who are trying to get you circumcised,
I wish they would go all the way and castrate themselves
48:56
obviously he was not happy with that teaching.
so that's what he's trying to go against.
49:02
as we pick it up here in Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
it's for Freedom that Christ has set us free.
49:07
we're not under the law.
we don't have to celebrate the Feast of trumpets.
we don't have to do Passover.
49:14
we don't have to go to the temple in Jerusalem three times a year.
we don't have to do a lot of things.
49:21
we we can eat pork.
could somebody say, 'Amen' to that?
I had some pork belly, the other day, Korean pork belly.
49:28
oh I was thanking God I'm a Christian.
I'm not under the law
I could eat that
(구약율법에 의해 유대인은 돼지고기를 안 먹는데 율법이 폐지된 신약시대의 어떤 신자도 율법 지킨다고 안 먹음)
49:34
and there's a a lot of other things in the Old Testament that we're set free from.
49:39
you had to do all those things to be accepted by God.
49:44
Paul says, 'no'.
the acceptance by God is a gift.
you get it as a gift.
salvation is a gift, not something you earn.
49:49
anyone here today or watching online,
you're trying to live a good life to go to Heaven one day.
49:55
please pleas get off that track.
you will never live a good enough life to go to Heaven.
do I get an amen?
50:03
salvation is a gift.
for by the works of the flesh works of the law, no one is ever justified.
50:10
so he's saying Christ has set us free.
stand firm then.
don't let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
50:16
he's going to tell them if you're listening to these guys who are saying, 'get circumcised'.
they're trying to bring you back to the old testament,
which is now done away with in Christ.
so he says, mark my words,
Galatians 5:2
Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised,
Christ will be of no value to you at all.
* "Of no value" means something is useless, worthless, or insignificant.
전지전능하신 성자 하나님이신 예수님 한분으로 부족해서 뭔가를 더 추가한다는 건 신성모독에 준한 모욕임
50:27
I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ, woo, Christ will be of no value to you
50:34
if you try to add something, now Christ is negated in your life
because you're trying to say Jesus is not enough,
I have to add something.
50:41
that's NG, not good.
so again, I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the whole law
50:52
you who are trying to be justified by the law have been alien ated from Christ.
you have fallen away from grace.
50:59
now there's a dangerous verse, uh mysterious verse
51:04
in other words, if we saved by grace,
how could you be alienated from grace by living a bad life?
no, by by going back to the law, now you're saying Jesus is not enough.
(율법과 은혜는 공존할 수 없기에 율법으로 돌아간다는 건 은혜를 거부하는 것이다)
51:12
you want to go back to Moses and all those rules.
very sad.
in Florida I have a friend who's a Puerto Rican brother.
51:27
and he had a brother.
they grew up in New York.
they were out in the street (거리에서 나돈다는 말은 부랑자로 살았다는 의미임)
and then they both got saved and went to Spanish churches.
51:36
and um then his brother, when they moved to Florida, got involved in a Messianic Church.
you know Jewish Believers in Yeshua.
(Jesus는 히브리어인 Yeshua/예수와/여호수와의 헬라식 발음임)
51:43
and he got fascinated by the Jewish religion.
and he converted to Judaism.
and his son who's 25 or so is over in Israel studying to be a rabbi.
51:56
he's rejected Jesus and went back to the law.
Paul says, now there, you've moved away from the grace of God.
the grace of God, the blessing of God,
forgiveness only comes through Jesus.
(율법조문에는 용서라는 단어가 없음)
52:09
do you all understand that?
say aloud, 'amen',
that you understand that there's no forgiveness outside of through Jesus
52:15
Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.
But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a];
rather, serve one another humbly in love.
so, now he makes a turn.
yes, my brothers and sisters
you were called to be free, you, called to be free.
52:26
but do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh.
what's that about?
he hadn't mentioned that word in the whole letter.
rather serve one another humbly in love.
52:40
so now he's saying you're in a position of freedom.
you have been saved.
you can't get saved again. (일단 구원받으면 다시 구원받을 필요가 없다)
52:47
Jesus died and you've accepted that.
the blood, as we were singing, is higher, goes higher than the highest mountain
52:55
goes to the lowest valley.
you you are complete now in Christ.
but now that you're complete and are Christian and you're born again.
53:02
don't use that position to indulge something called 'the flesh'.
53:08
well, the word in the Greek, for that word 'flesh', to indulge the flesh, pamper the flesh, listen to the flesh.
53:14
That word 'flesh' in Greek word is called SARX, S A R X 싹스
53:20
everyone say, SARX, SARX.
and that word is translated in various translations :
the flesh, the old man, the lower nature, the sinful nature,
53:32
and he's saying now that you're Christians.
you have to be careful that the flesh doesn't rear its head and you indulge it again.
so what's that mean?
53:44
flesh is, to make it personal, the flesh is Jim symbola, apart from Christ.
all that I am, depraved, selfish, self-seeking,
I at the center of everything.
same for you. 당신들도 그렇다
54:04
every one of us has a flesh, an old man, a sinful nature, a lower nature.
54:10
that's not involved in spiritual things.
it doesn't want to know spirit.
it wants to know flesh, gratification.
54:16
so Paul says, now you're, you're Christians.
54:24
now, don't let your freedom be in a place where you indulge the flesh.
notice what he says.
the opposite is 'serve one another humbly in love'.
54:31
what does that mean?
in other words the flesh is me me me me.
54:37
the opposite of me is 'serve other people in love'
mature Christians who are really becoming more like Christ.
they're, they're driven to other people.
how can I serve, how can I love, who needs a helping hand?
54:50
before they found Christ, they didn't care about that.
I'll tell you right now whatever you think of me,
54:56
I'm the most selfish person in the world outside of Christ
55:02
I couldn't give a hoot about anyone /before I found Jesus.
I know he changed my life now.
(슬랭 GIVE A HOOT ; to care at all about someone or something)
55:08
my great joy is serving and being with other people, trying to help them,
but that's (not) my old nature.
and notice it hasn't changed and it's still with me (it=my old nature)
55:15
Paul is talking about now as we're going to see an inner conflict.
55:22
that if you're a born again Christian you have the Holy Spirit living in you
except I also also have Jim Cymbala, lurking in the shadows, the old me, the sinful nature
55:34
that want wants gratification
and I Jim Cymbala used to run Jim Cymbala
now Christ is in the Throne of my heart
55:42
and the flesh doesn't like that, like get out of there
I used to run things
who's this Jesus, now,
comprender or no comprender? (comprender ; understand in Spanish 이해합니까 못 합니까?)
so Paul is saying now you believers notice this
listen, you're not going to deny it and overcome it
56:03
so that you will be a Christian
no, you're going to deny it because you want to live a life pleasing to the Lord.
(기독인이 되려고 자기를 부인하는 것이 아니고 이미 기독인이고 주님을 기쁘시게 하려고 하는 것임)
56:10
don't you want to please the Lord?
no, if we wake up tomorrow morning,
we have a chance tomorrow, every one of us,
we can make God happy, we can make God sad.
that's the truth.
if we live a certain way,
56:21
like Christ, we'll make the Lord happy because, remember,
we've been um predestined and chosen to be conformed to the image of his son.
56:29
the school that all of us are in is God's trying to make us look like Jesus
/more and more /every day
56:36
one of the reasons you know you're a Christian is when the Holy Spirit lives in you
56:42
and you're born again.
there's a desire to be like the Lord.
you don't want to go back to the old garbage.
you don't want to go back to the old you.
56:49
if you're here today and you don't care how you live,
I just go to church and try to live a good life,
you really need to find the Lord.
you need to get along.
we'll pray with you later.
you need to become a Christian
57:02
once the Holy Spirit comes to live in you, you want to live holy.
you want to be separate.
you (don't) want to live like everybody else (다른 사람들처럼 살기를 원치 않는다)
57:08
why are you staring at me?
(왜 날 빤히 쳐다봅니까? 또는 내가 이상해요?)
am I right or wrong here?
57:15
so this brings in a lot of tension and uh battle that not many of us talk about.
57:22
because we want to serve the Lord and be pleasing to him.
57:28
so we make vows and promises.
I'm not doing that again.
I'm not going to say that.
I'm not going to do that.
57:36
and then we find there's another something in us.
somewhere like Paul talks about in Romans chapter 7,
57:42
where I want to do good but there's something in me that wants to do bad.
even though I want to do good.
57:48
anybody ever been there?
so with my head, I say, yeah, I know how I should live.
but there's something else in me that takes me away.
57:54
and I'm doing the opposite.
I know I should treat my wife with respect and honor her, right?
but then there's something may come at me sometimes that would insult her or hurt her.
God forbid.
well what is this?
58:08
I thought I was a Christian.
oh and Satan loves this kind of um a situation.
58:15
because here's the battles.
if you profess to be a Christian and you want to live right
and please the Lord and become more like Christ.
58:23
and then you break down continually and then you repent, then you break down.
58:30
then then, the thought is maybe I'm not a Christian.
or, dude, why go to church?
58:36
you're a hypocrite.
you know there are people right now who should be in this building today that are not.
(오늘 교회 왔어야 하는데 오지 않은 신자들이 있다)
58:42
and what Satan's using is their slip and their fall.
see, you slipped, you fell, you did whatever.
58:48
you got drunk, you got high, whatever the thing is,
and now why go to church?
you're not a Christian.
(got high 마약에 취해서 황홀하다)
58:56
of course I know that, like the back of my hand, counseling people, knowing my own life.
59:01
so now for the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command,
love your neighbor as yourself.
writing to Christians;
but if you bite and devour each other, watch out or you'll be destroyed by each other.
59:18
how in the world do you write to a Christian Church:
watch out, because if you bite and devour one another,
you'll be destroyed by one another?
(어떻게 신자들에게 그런 말을 쓸 수 있을까? 하나 그들이 그러고 있기 때문이다)
59:24
how could you write that to Christians?
would they ever do that?
yep!
59:31
how many churches right now in New York City have the same 20 people for the last 20 years
because the division, the gossip, the fighting, let's just take that,
is so bad that, it's that the Holy Spirit could never settle there and bless
because everything is fighting in contention.
59:50
so you know Christian.
they gossip, they criticize, they go on social media again against other Christians.
59:57
1:00:05
and then we sing... you are Alpha ..
how many get that?
that shouldn't be that way.
are you with me so far?
1:00:11
Paul's now addressing something.
he said, no, don't go back into legalism
but now he said, no, we're saved by the grace of God.
but remember, you can't use the fact that you're free now and a Christian
to indulge this monster called the flesh.
1:00:26
not a demon, me (마귀가 아니고 나)
that'll humble you.
my biggest enemy is me.
1:00:35
notice also this;
God never changes the flesh.
1:00:40
he never works with it.
he never tries to fix it up.
1:00:47
I'm so out of it that he never works with me.
he gives me a new heart, a new spirit.
1:00:54
he puts Christ in me through the Holy Spirit.
and says now let Christ live out because I'm not working with that old Jim Cymbala.
1:01:03
he's kaput.
(슬랭 kaput ; broken, dead, or worthless.)
1:01:08
and we're trying...
I know this,
when I was growing up I'm trying to fix myself up,
so that God will look and say, 'okay, now you made it'.
don't just stare at me.
you've done the same thing.
1:01:13
when I was a kid they had special meetings one summer.
my mom and dad were hoping I would get saved and change my behavior patterns.
1:01:20
and they dragged me to church every Tuesday, Wednesday, Sundays.
every every day I was there.
1:01:26
I went up to the altar.
maybe in 16 meetings I went up 14 times to get saved.
1:01:33
and not one of them worked.
because I really trying by will power I'm going to change.
1:01:40
but salvation is a gift and it involves a miracle.
Christ comes to live in us.
1:01:46
how many know you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you?
lift your hand up.
praise God for that.
1:01:54
now the flesh, though, is still lurking there waiting its chance.
and now Paul said, don't indulge it.
1:02:00
don't listen to it.
don't go back where you came from.
1:02:05
so I say, here's the only way to overcome the flesh.
1:02:12
walk by the spirit.
notice walk, which means not a one-time experience.
1:02:18
learn to walk by the Spirit.
you used to walk in the flesh.
1:02:24
and whatever the flesh whispered to you and urged you and gave you cravings,
you went after it in one way shape or other.
1:02:29
now don't do that.
don't listen to Jim Cymbala anymore.
he's hopeless.
1:02:38
see that's the pride in us that makes it hard.
we don't want to say we're hopeless.
we're still trying to fix the flesh.
1:02:45
you can't fix the flesh.
it only knows one rule - self, self-gratification,
1:02:51
my people, my color, my political party, me,
you get it? me.
1:02:59
and if you disagree, I'm coming after you (반대하면 잡아서 족칠것이다)
(COME AFTER is to chase (someone) : to try to find or capture someone you want to hurt or punish)
that's all the flesh knows.
but to now walk in the Spirit.
1:03:05
you start serving one another in love.
if you walk by the spirit you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
1:03:11
you know Luther.
when he was in the monastery, he wanted to live holy.
1:03:16
and he wanted to be like Christ.
and he made promises and vows and
1:03:22
he did special prayers, back 1500 and 15 (1515년)
let's say in Germany,
and at night
1:03:29
because he knew he had failed again, unclean thoughts, proud thoughts, hateful thoughts
1:03:34
he see another brother in the convent that he hated.
and he just just looked him and he knew there I go again.
1:03:41
so he would take a Scourge kind of thing with metal a leather thing with
1:03:46
metal in it and he would beat himself scourge himself.
and they would find him sometimes unconscious in the morning in a pool of blood.
1:03:53
he is going to beat the flesh out of them.
1:03:59
it ain't coming out that way.
the only way to overcome the flesh.
and what it wants to do is through walking in the Spirit.
in other words, you can't go two directions at once.
1:04:11
if we used to walk this way, the flesh I cannot go that way if I'm going this way.
1:04:17
so now let's just define terms and wrap it up,
1:04:26
oh, for the flesh, Jim Cymbala desires what is contrary to the Holy Spirit.
1:04:33
and the Holy Spirit, what is contrary to Jim Cymbala's flesh.
they are in conflict with each other.
so that you are not to do whatever you want.
1:04:40
sometimes you're held back.
because the flesh gets in roads and keeps you back from obeying the Spirit.
1:04:45
and then sometimes the flesh is leading us away
and the spirit comes to our rescue and drags us back.
you don't know about that conflict?
I'll give you another analogy.
1:04:57
the doctor says go on a diet and you know it's right.
and he says, you're not going to live long
and your cholesterol is 7,000,
okay?
1:05:05
and you know you should
and you tell your wife I'm going on a diet.
1:05:12
and then you go to the grocery store.
did you know that Oreo has a voice?
1:05:21
Oreos have a voice.
how many have ever heard that voice or whatever your weakness is.
1:05:27
no, no, you're not going to buy it and you're not going to eat it.
because you just told yourself it's it's bad.
1:05:33
why would I do something that I know is bad and would hurt me?
because it's not that simple.
1:05:41
how many get the analogy, just lift your hand, okay?
and that's the way we are.
I'm not going to do that, not going to mistreat my wife anymore.
1:05:48
I'm rude to her.
I don't help her.
I'm a lousy husband.
1:05:53
I'm going to change but it's not so easy because self gets entrenched.
and self doesn't care about your wife.
1:05:59
self cares about you.
so, Paul says they're in tension with each other.
1:06:08
but if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
if you're obeying the spirit you're never going to violate God's law.
1:06:14
if I'm following the Holy Spirit
and he's creating thoughts and leading and urgings in me.
1:06:20
how would I possibly sin against somebody?
1:06:27
so let's define the terms.
now the acts of the flesh,
my flesh, your flesh, are obvious : sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery, idolatry,
1:06:39
which many times is linked to greed money because money becomes people's god.
1:06:45
they worry more about money than they do about anything to do with the kingdom of Christ.
1:06:51
they talk money, worry about money,
hurt their marriages by trying to get more money,
money, money, money, money, money
idolatry and witchcraft
1:06:59
that's odd.
it's not demonic.
it's linked here to the flesh.
1:07:04
there's something in certain people's flesh as it develops that they're drawn to the dark side.
1:07:11
they're walking down the street and they see Rosa the fortune teller (점쟁이).
1:07:18
and she's out there.
she'll tell you your future.
they're reading the newspaper.
1:07:26
and they see the signs of Aquarius or whatever,
the signs of the zodiac and your fortune for today (금주의 운세).
are you a Taurus?
1:07:33
are you this read it they know they don't need that.
why are they reading it?
here's your fortune,
'surely goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life
and you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
1:07:46
but there's a pull to that
is there not a pull?
is there not a pull?
1:07:52
some of you have dabbled in stuff.
that's the last thing God wants you dabbling in.
why would you need to know your fortune?
1:08:00
you got your fortune.
see, the flesh is like that, though goes further.
hatred, just hating discord,
1:08:09
trouble, fighting, jealousy, resenting
other people for their blessings, fits of rage going off on people, selfish ambition
1:08:14
I got to push myself forward.
I don't care about anyone else.
1:08:21
dissensions, factions,
that's all the little party spirit,
I'm black, you're not.
I'm white you're not.
I'm Assemblies of God, you're Baptist.
1:08:28
I'm Latino, uh I'm different than you.
I'm Seventh Day Adventist.
1:08:35
you're this, I'm that.
I grew up different.
my food is better than your food.
all of that stuff is from the flesh.
1:08:41
that's all that people can think about is
why are they going to fight for that?
because there it's them.
it's I.
1:08:48
and I is better than you.
that's all flesh
and it's linked right there with some horrible things.
1:08:54
but there's more; envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like
1:09:01
now, look how serious this is.
I warn you as I did before that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
1:09:06
so please look at me.
I want to clear my conscience.
I want to sleep tonight (양심에 꺼리낌 있으면 잠 못 잔다)
1:09:14
anyone who lives practicing those things will never get into heaven.
1:09:20
but we shouldn't say Amen like that. (그런식으로 잘난척하며 아멘해서는 않된다)
to be honest with you, we should just say, Amen. (그냥 아멘합시다)
1:09:25
let's all say, 'Amen'.
we don't want to bury anyone here.
we want to just warn everyone.
1:09:32
that's what Paul is doing.
you can go to church but if you live that way, you're deceiving yourself.
1:09:39
you'll know a tree by its fruit.
you don't know a tree by where it goes on Sunday.
1:09:46
so I just want to plead and if any of you are struggling.
and you I will stay here as long as you need me at the end of this service.
1:09:53
but don't live in that deception.
that's American Christianity.
1:09:59
sing some worship and praise song and then live any way you want.
you can't live any way you want,
you belong to Jesus.
1:10:06
how many belong to Jesus?
say, 'Amen'.
so we don't want to displease him.
people who live like that, unrepentant.
we all fall, we all slip.
but person who when they're corrected says,
no, I'm not giving up living with her.
it makes me happy
how about that, pal?
1:10:22
now you have a problem.
you got someone deceived.
1:10:30
so but the fruit of the Spirit, look what the works of the flesh are.
you just heard it.
now, here's the fruit of the Spirit.
1:10:37
that's Jim Cymbala.
notice what the Holy Spirit produces,
by itself, not you.
1:10:43
the spirit controlling you produces love, joy, peace, forbearance,
1:10:51
patience with people, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
1:10:59
against such things, there's no law.
go back to the the the beginning of that list,
the fruit of the spirit, love, joy, peace.
1:11:05
when the Spirit is controlling us, when we're walking by the Spirit.
whatever that means, we're going to have a love flowing from us.
1:11:12
we're going to have a peace that only the Spirit gives.
1:11:18
you don't need drug to bring you down.
the Spirit gives you a peace and a joy.
1:11:23
it's not you though.
it's the Spirit working in you.
1:11:30
am I explaining this,
help me God,
am I explain this?
do you understand what I'm saying?
1:11:36
it's the spirit, doing that.
so you don't have to fight for peace or joy.
1:11:43
you surrender to the Spirit for peace and joy.
you say, 'here am I'.
take me, lead me, guide me.
and this is what he produces.
forbearance is patience with people who annoy you.
1:12:05
ah....
you know how Italian people go. ah....
1:12:11
did you ever run into some people that just test your patience?
1:12:16
They just, they don't know it but they're killing you by how they act
1:12:24
so here's a choice.
I was coming out of the hospital after my knee trans, my knee replacement.
1:12:30
and a young girl 18, 19 in the hospital room.
she's helping me get on my um sweatpants, which I should have worn.
1:12:35
it was hard to get into them.
1:12:40
and my knee can't move.
I mean my knee is in pain like you can't believe.
1:12:46
and she can't get it and then to get my leg into it she starts pushing my leg all over the place.
1:12:51
and um she knew I was a pastor because I witnessed to her.
1:12:56
that was my big mistake.
I witnessed to her I told her I'm a Christian.
1:13:02
and now she's doing that and I have to go, 'no, that's okay, honey. it's it's fine'.
you know and I 'm..
1:13:08
and then as she's helping me to get up.
she gets up from her little chair and steps right on my left foot.
1:13:16
and I see stars (별이 보였다는 이픈 충격의 표현)
so here were the options.
here's the flesh
1:13:23
no, here's the Holy Spirit.
oh, I'm sorry sir.
even though it hurts.
that's okay.
1:13:31
I've made mistakes in my life.
isn't that a good answer?
1:13:39
it hurt but I know you didn't mean it.
you didn't wake up in the morning and say I'm going to hurt the man's knee.
1:13:45
or I could have a flesh answer.
what are you doing?
didn't they train you?
1:13:52
this is a joke!
you're hurting me more than the surgery.
where's your supervisor?
1:14:02
that's an answer, too, right?
Spirit or flesh, what is it with us today?
1:14:10
do we want to be like Christ?
do we want to answer like Christ?
1:14:17
do we want to at the end of the day have him look down,
and say, 'you let me help you today, good job'
1:14:25
so, in closing, look,
those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires,
but the Holy Spirit has to do that.
1:14:38
and here since we live by the spirit, since we're born again and Christ changed us by the Spirit.
let us keep in step with the Spirit.
1:14:46
don't start and say, 'it's God's grace',
and now after you're saved, uh let let it all hang out.
1:14:52
that's not good.
that's wrong very dangerous.
1:14:58
okay, so here's something God has taught me.
I share it with you.
hopefully it'll help you.
1:15:04
for the great in another book, Paul says, 'for the grace of God has appeared,
Jesus, offering salvation to all people.
1:15:16
it's the grace of God teaches us to say what.
what?
1:15:27
to ungodliness the flesh and worldly passions and to live self-controlled upright
1:15:33
and godly lives in the present age.
only the Spirit can give us the strength and the discernment and the fortitude that when we're tempted
1:15:44
we can say, 'no,
in myself I can't say, 'no'.
1:15:51
my dad was an alcoholic,
for those of you visiting here today my dad was an alcoholic for 22 years.
1:15:58
every time he walked by a liquor store
a voice came for him and never once could he say, 'no'.
1:16:05
couldn't do it
he beat my mother up, beat me up and then lay on my lap, crying on,
Jimmy, I'm sorry. I don't want to do this.
it was just sad,
1:16:26
22 years...
and then the Lord, delivered him by letting him see it's not by fighting alcohol.
it's by saying yes to Jesus, by following the Spirit.
1:16:33
the Spirit will never lead you to um kind of story that he would go to liquor store.
1:16:44
so we're going to be led by one of the other.
1:16:50
and when the flesh calls, only the grace of God can give us the strength to say, no.
look at me, every time you say, 'no'
1:16:59
and I say, 'no' to the flesh, saying come on baby,
that's a yes to Jesus
1:17:07
listen again.
every time we say 'no' to those suggestions, those images, those urgings,
1:17:14
that's the way to say yes to the only way
1:17:19
to say yes to Jesus is to follow it with a no.
I'm not going that way.
so how do you do that?
and then I'm done.
1:17:24
this has helped me.
maybe it'll help you.
it's one thing I've been in church since I was a kid.
1:17:30
people preach stuff say, Yes to God.
1:17:38
but how's that work out.
1:17:44
deny the flesh.
say yes to the Spirit.
I mean how's that work out
how do you do that on Monday?
1:17:51
so Paul in another book of Romans is telling the Christians there.
1:17:57
about these choices of how we live.
and he says this, 'those who live according to the flesh the SARS
1:18:04
ah they have their minds set on what the flesh desires,
1:18:11
but those who live in accordance with the Spirit,
1:18:18
the Holy Spirit, have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
see, like, right now there's some people who probably wait can't wait to get out of here.
1:18:23
I noticed they're rumbling here a little bit in the second row
and they just want to get out of here.
1:18:30
listen, because their mind isn't set on the Holy Spirit.
they want to get out of here.
1:18:35
okay, but then another person whose mind is on spiritual things.
1:18:41
they're like, oh, give us the word of God.
how many of you ever just hungered for the word of God?
1:18:48
that's not you that's the Holy Spirit hungering through you for the word of God.
one translation has it this way;
1:18:56
those who walk In the flesh
and listen to the flesh have their thoughts shaped by the flesh.
1:19:05
their thinking is controlled and textured by the flesh.
because whatever we're going to do, it has to come into sucabasa.
it has to be a thought first.
1:19:19
so the battle is the flesh wants my mind to pay attention to to it.
1:19:25
and then those cravings and urgings get back at that person.
1:19:31
they did you dirty.
never talk to them again.
I know they called you and invited you to the wedding.
you don't go, dirty dog.
1:19:38
every dog has their day and now is your day, bow, wow, wow,
how about that?
or the Spirit is saying, no, be like Christ.
but these are all thoughts.
1:19:56
all of us tomorrow we're only going to do what we think about obviously.
what can we,
how can I do something without thinking?
1:20:02
so there's neutral thoughts.
get up in the morning, shower, shave, have breakfast
1:20:08
Fruit Loops
1:20:14
did you know?
I just heard this; 10,000 chemicals that are allowed in our food in America.
1:20:20
and in Europe, they only have 400.
1:20:26
we're messed up.
how many say, 'amen'?
what are we taking into us?
1:20:33
they said that one coloring for Fruit Loops or something comes from gasoline.
tomorrow, today, right now when we leave,
1:20:45
we're going to be walking, we'll be praising God
and we'll be thinking about neutral things.
1:20:51
and then we're going to say Holy Spirit lead me today,
help me today, guide me today, give me words to say today.
1:20:58
who can I help today?
Lord, keep it about you and others.
1:21:05
and then even as we're walking, there's a little voice sometimes that whispers.
1:21:12
it's the flesh wanting attention of my mind
to think about something that is not like Jesus.
comprender or no comprender? (comprender ; understand in Spanish 이해합니까 못 합니까?)
1:21:23
and the grace of God is the only one the spirit teaches us to go.
1:21:31
no, out!
Fill me, Lord, with your thoughts, oh Jesus, I praise you.
1:21:38
you say yeah but, Pastor, I've done that in in five minutes later,
I get that craving or that thought.
good! say, 'no'.
just say it.
say it out loud, 'no'.
1:21:47
or say it in your heart, 'no'.
I'm going to praise Jesus today.
1:21:52
the only way we can walk by the Spirit is to deny those other thoughts that want to get in our head.
1:21:58
once they get in your head it's amazing how they multiply.
1:22:04
am I speaking about real life now or what?
1:22:11
you, Pastor Cymbala, what are you talking about?
I'm living my whole life every day 24-7.
I have neutral thoughts and things
I have to do my job whatever,
but then I'm just be open to the Spirit
and trying to follow what he wants me to do.
1:22:22
and say even to my wife and my children and on the job and in the subway and everything.
1:22:28
and then you're telling me that's 24/7.
and if another voice that I know is the old Jim Cymbala comes creeping around.
I just have to address it, no!
1:22:36
the grace of God teaches me to tell you 'no,
I'm walking this way.
I'm not walking back.
1:22:44
and you can come back as many times as you want.
by the grace of God, no, no.
Satan has the ability using the flesh to knock on the door.
we don't have to but let them in, have coffee.
we say, no.
shut thy door, shut the door,
otherwise, we end up living hypocritical lives in church on Sunday.
and defeated all during the week.
that is the saddest life.
the emptiest life is not these um Superstars and and uh um hip hop culture icons,
1:23:27
and athletes who are making those...
they have a sad life because they're empty.
1:23:35
but the saddest life is a Christian who's defeated all week long and keeps craving for victory.
1:23:41
that's the saddest life to be a Christian and defeated is a very sad life.
1:23:47
but the Lord wants us to live victoriously.
1:23:52
I said victoriously.
can we clap our hands?
victoriously!
not by struggling but by following.
1:23:59
anybody wants special prayer...
1:24:11
see, they never took my dad to the pastor.
he started drinking.
1:24:18
my mother knew it was wrong.
my older brother, my sister, my mom's gone, my older brother's gone.
my sisters alive.
and they said, 'no' we can't tell the pastor.
but the flesh had burst out.
1:24:30
I don't know, you know how..
let me just say this last thing not to be overly personal.
Before you found Jesus if you got in certain grooves of the flesh.
and really gave yourself to it.
1:24:43
those grooves get very deep.
and if you get away from the Lord and being guided by a Spirit.
1:24:49
it'll lead you back to really some nasty stuff.
because that habit is in the flesh.
1:24:57
now some people aren't interested in immorality and and all pornography and all of that.
1:25:02
but they live for money.
that's all they can.
they're ruining their life because they're such misers.
1:25:08
they want money or they're haters or they're gossipers.
they destroy churches, they fake, they talk nice to people.
1:25:15
then when the person's not there they destroy them.
whatever the thing was that you were or maybe your parents were,
1:25:20
and you heard it around the table,
that's usually the way it goes back.
that's why to this day since I was a kid.
1:25:27
I won't even drink a glass of wine uh
if I'm offered one not because I can prove from the Bible wine is wrong.
but because I saw what hell I lived in.
1:25:39
because my dad took one filthy drink and it started 22 years of hell.
1:25:46
and I don't know what's in me and I don't want to find out.
1:25:52
I want to stay away from it.
I want to stay away from anything that's not of Jesus.
how many are with me?
let's stay away from, come on, wave your hand at me.
conversation, pictures, movies ,clubs, people.
just... the Lord does not want me here.
you may close your eyes, please.
1:26:15
if you're here today,
and say, Pastor, sermon was for everyone starting with me, pastor,
I'd love someone to pray for me though,
1:26:27
because I'm going through a battle
the flesh is trying to do a number on me.
(to do a number ; to injure someone or something, or to hurt or embarrass someone: )
we don't want to know what's going on.
1:26:35
just the flesh is trying to pull me back.
but this sermon illuminated my mind that I don't have to fight it in my own strength.
I have to yield to the Spirit.
1:26:48
follow the Spirit.
you can come out of your seat now and just stand, kneel, sit on these steps.
1:26:54
and we'll have deacons pray with you.
I'll pray with you.
1:27:01
anybody who's going through a real battle.
these are real battles that we hardly ever talk about.
1:27:08
it's so easy to just say the devil made me do it.
1:27:14
this is a little bit different teaching from the New Testament.
Father, you put inside of us,
you did it when you reached down
and saved us you put inside of us your beautiful Holy Spirit.
1:32:56
and now there's a craving in us to be holy.
we used to not have it.
1:33:02
we didn't care how we lived.
now because of you we want to be holy.
these tears, Lord, this young lady bent over here praying,
1:33:15
you're working in her.
and we want to be holy like you, Lord Jesus.
1:33:22
in our conversation, in our minds, in our hearts, in our real relationships.
clean, pure, holy.
1:33:28
so Lord teach us by your Spirit how to walk by the Spirit.
teach us.
1:33:39
I said words but, Lord, you have to give revelation to the people.
you have to teach them.
you have to teach us.
1:33:48
teach us how to say 'no' to ungodly lusts and thoughts that come in our mind.
1:33:55
we can't control the thoughts.
but we can say 'no' and they'll leave.
they come back,
we will say no again by your grace.
and then they're not going to be coming so often,
because they know they don't have an open door.
1:34:07
help us to be serious and watchful, prayerful, humble, loving one another,
1:34:20
God, the most beautiful day we'll ever live is the most holy day we'll ever live.
money and all the stuff the world says important, it's nada, nothing.
1:34:31
passes away in a second,
oh, but to be like you Jesus.
1:34:42
Santo Senior,
so help us all.
bless the offering as the people leave.
1:34:47
thank you for the meeting.
1:34:55
thank you for everything.
we pray your safe journey for all of us, in Jesus name.
and everyone said, 'Amen'.
