The Swedish government has announced a new military aid package to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses.
The announcement, which was published in Svenska Dagbladet on February 23, 2025, the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, was made by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, and Minister of Education Johan Pehrson.
“On the anniversary, we can now also announce procurements of air defense systems worth a total of SEK1.2 billion [approximately $113 million] for donation to Ukraine,” the announcement read.

The military assistance will include the supply of Robotsystem 70 (RBS 70) and Tridon Mk2 air defense systems.
The RBS 70 is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) developed by Swedish defense company Saab Bofors Dynamics. Ukraine first received deliveries of the RBS 70 in early 2023 as part of Sweden’s continued support in response to Russia’s invasion.
Meanwhile, the Tridon Mk2 will be supplied to the Ukrainian armed forces for the first time. BAE Systems recently unveiled this air defense system during the 2024 Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris.
It is based on the 40-millimeter Bofors gun, a weapon widely used since World War II, and is designed to counter drones, aircraft, cruise missiles, and even armored vehicles.
The Tridon Mk2 presents a cost-effective and high-performance alternative to missile-based air defense systems. It has a theoretical maximum rate of fire of 300 rounds per minute, although it typically operates in short bursts of 5 to 10 shots.
With a range of up to 12 kilometers, it offers a significant advantage in countering aerial threats, including inexpensive loitering munitions and armed drones.
TRIDON Mk2 fills the gap in the air defence. The system is capable of combating everything from drones and cruise missiles, to aircraft and armoured vehicles, creating security and protection for both military forces and civil infrastructure.
The TRIDON Mk2 is one of the most effective anti-aircraft systems today, out-performing any other gun of calibre 40 mm or less. It is the product of evolution brought about by nearly 90 years of experience – fighting the bad guys since 1936.
Able to combat multiple threats quickly, the TRIDON Mk2 is a high-precision, cost-effective system that is easy to deploy and simple to maintain. Its modular design allows it to adapt to changing needs and to grow with new technologies.
The system is designed with flexibility in mind and is capable of combating everything from drones and cruise missiles, to aircraft and armoured vehicles – creating security and protection for both military forces and civil infrastructure.
The TRIDON Mk2 is a modern anti-aircraft system for today’s warfare. Specialized in filling the gaps behind expensive missile systems, it meets the growing need for air-denial weapons, providing a low-cost, rapid anti-aircraft system crucial for keeping the skies clear.
Traditional threats like combat aircraft and missiles are joined by numerous unmanned systems, enabling smaller units to conduct aerial reconnaissance, fire control and airstrikes. A modern anti-aircraft system must have the capability of handling a wide range of threats and combat situations.
Keep the sky clear
The TRIDON Mk2 is a self-propelled and remotely controlled 40 mm anti-aircraft artillery gun with an effective range against aerial and ground targets up to 12 km depending on the target, selected ammunition, sensor suite and surrounding terrain.
