Title: Lord of the Flies
Author: William Golding
Published by: Faber
Character: Ralph-a leader of the boys
Jack-An opponent of Ralph
Piggy-smart boy who aids Ralph
Story:
Few boys shipwrecked and land on an island. When the boys were all gathered, they chose Ralph as their leader. And Jack, who was a tough boy, was in charge of hunting since he thought they needed meat above all. Ralph and his loyal follower Piggy thought the most important matter was fire and shelter.
Everything seemed to be going well that they even made fire by using Piggy’s glasses. (As in the book, specs) but a little boy claimed that he had seen a beast from the forest. Then fire broke out, and the little boy disappeared.
When they built a hut, boys began to go around by themselves. Ralph still tried to keep building but Jack was more on hunting a bore.
Jack began to wear mud on his face and he finally succeeded in hunting a bore. But while hunting, the fire extinguished. And Jack was blamed for that because a ship passed by. Boys freaked out because of a rumor that the beast was coming from the sea.
A dead body fell into the island and Ralph and Jack thought that was the beast. They came back as they were scared, and they moved to seashore. Jack tried to take place of Ralph but boys did not agree. Then Jack left with his hunting teams. Simon went to see the beast and he saw that it was a dead body. So he came back to boys to tell the truth but Jack’s gangs were dancing that of hunting and madness. They killed Simon as they saw him. Jack’s gangs attacked Ralph’s hut and stole Piggy’s glasses. Ralph and Piggy went to Jack and tried to get the glasses back but the gangs killed Piggy and began to hunt Ralph.
While chasing, Ralph and hunting boys met the rescue team. They asked the boys how come they were not any better since they were well educated English boys. Then the boys began to cry.
Impression:
Cruel. Golding does look like a gentleman but inside him, he believed on the basic cruelty of any mankind even from birth. It was disgusting that just little boys can think of killing that easily. It is disgusting that boys did that.
While this, I think it was a part of Ralph’s problem. He should not be that stupid. He could set jobs of boys and organize them more. I thought, if I were him, I could have done better.
I am sure I could have done better. They were good. But, there were only one problem. They were good but not smart enough.
