Topic 1>I want to shoot small scale movies,' says Bong
Award-winning
filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's films on occasion have entailed unwanted troubles and
generated issues during and after shooting.
The three local major theater chains have, after all, refused to
screen Bong's recent film "Okja" (2017) after it had been
simultaneously released by the American streaming service Netflix. Boycotting
the screening of the brand-new movie, the giant cinemas argued that they will
only screen Netflix's original content if "Okja" is released in the
theater first.
Bong's previous hit "Snow Piercer" (2013) was not
welcomed first for delivering the story in English and casting foreign actors.
Bong had to fight one year for editorial control of the movie too.
"Although my film, ‘Memories of a Murderer,' was a big
success, many refuse to invest in my next film ‘The Host,'" said Bong "People said it is very strange that a
monster would come out from the Han River. Thankfully, I was able to start the
movie after I received half of my budget investment from Japan," said
Bong.
The film "Mother" (2009) is the only movie that Bong
shot without causing a stir. Its screening also had gone smoothly.
Bong says he hates challenges but likes peace. He believes there
is a reason behind all the hardships that he had gone through while shooting
his movies.
"When I started Okja in the beginning, I thought it would be
a smaller scale film than Snow Piercer. I want to shoot every film like
Mother," added Bong.
Bong promises his next film "Parasite" (2018) will be
locally-based and a Korean language film. He maintains there will be no foreign
actors either.
His recent movies adopted universal themes, delivering heavy
messages to a global audience. However, Bong says they turned out universally
consequential and he only shot stories on the topics he was engrossed in each
time.
"I shoot films that I want to watch. Students frequently ask
me what is the audience to me. I tell them I am the audience. I shoot films
thinking that I am the audience and I make stories that I want to watch. It makes the scenes a lot simpler," said Bong.

2> Racial discrimination? Korean-American actors quit 'Hawaii Five-O' over
unequal pay
Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, two of the
main actors in U.S. TV drama "Hawaii Five-O," are quitting the show
over unequal pay, according to Variety, a U.S. entertainment news outlet.
Park and Kim had been seeking pay equality with the show's other
main actors, Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan, but were unable to reach a
satisfactory deal with the producer CBS Television Studios.
The final offer is known to have been 10 to 15 percent lower than
the other two actors.
A statement from CBS caused a further backlash from the show's
fans.
"We are so appreciative of Daniel and Grace's enormous
talents, professional excellence and the aloha spirit they brought to each and
every one of our 168 episodes," a CBS spokesperson said. "They've
helped us build an exciting new ‘Hawaii Five-0,' and we wish them all the best
and much success in their next chapters. Mahalo and a hui hou."
One fan said: "If you were so appreciative of their talents,
why not pay equally?"
"Once again white privilege raises its ugly head," wrote
another.
Other fans said they would boycott the show for its unfair wage
process.
"That ends it for me for the show," a fan said. "I
feel that, without them, the show is not worth watching. Loved both of their
characters. Pay them equally to keep a great show going."
Both actors were unavailable for comment, according to
Variety.

3>Sohn dreams of mom and pop chicken store
Sohn Min-ho, 29, has been modeling for 10 years and he has no doubt that
modeling is God's calling for him. Lately he came to hear his inner voice about
a humble profession that he'd like to pursue during the rest of his life. That
of being an owner of a small chicken restaurant.
His dream has since gone specific. Sohn wants a mom-and-pop
chicken store, rather than a franchise having nationwide eatery chains.
"I did not live an ordinary life when I was young," said
Sohn. "I had to help my parents
financially, working part times jobs. While working at a chicken restaurant, I
could not help envying the old married couple working together happily. Since
then, it was my dream to own a chicken restaurant and live a normal life with
my wife."
With all the money he earned as a model in eight years, Sohn
opened a shop in Itaewon in Dec. 2015.
He took the "peri-peri" sauce from the global chicken
franchise Nando's restaurant and spread them on his grilled chicken, expecting
to draw a lot of foreign customers in the "Western Town" of Korea.
However, he realized that most of the visitors to his restaurant
were his fans, who came to see him and maybe try the chicken since they are
there. But many Koreans did not like the strong taste of peri-peri sauce and
Sohn decided to develop an easy and unique flavor that can appeal to local
customers.
The most popular sauce at Sohn Sohn Grilled Chicken, "apple
garlic" now sells on 90 percent of all orders and the store has reached
sales of 50 chickens a day. He says it is a large amount considering his
restaurant is small. "We grill our
chicken, not fry them. I started the business because I like chicken and I
don't get fed up with the food even if I eat it every day. I eat chicken at my
restaurant at least three times a week to see if the taste has changed.
