Hexagram 4 : Meng(Monutain over Water / Youthful Folly)
▣ Six in the Fourth Place(Line 4) :
Entangled in ignorance brings regret and distress.
[Explanation]
(Six in the Fourth Place) : Though placed in a difficult plight due to ignorance,
one remains stingy and hesitant in correcting their faults.
[Commentary]
The initial six line[초육], which should assist me in my state of bound
ignorance(困蒙,곤몽), lies at the very lowest position.
Meanwhile, I have no connection with the excellent nine in the second place[
or the top nine[上九,상구].
Having no place to rely on or learn from,
one starves for knowledge yet lives a hard life unable to meet a wise mentor.
Ignorance breeds frustration and distress[吝,린 - rin].
Looking at such cases, it is not that academic fortune or help from benefactors
is completely absent.
How grievous a past life must one hhave lived to fail to meet a teacher who will rurture them?
Though parents give birth to the physical body, a teacher cultivates the spirit.
There is no one in this world worrying about me; thus, do not be bound by your environment.
Once you awaken, everything in creation(頭頭物物,두두물물) is a Buddha and a teacher―
just peel back a single layer of illusion.
No one can eat food on your behalf.
A teacher or friend of true virtue (實德,실덕) does not intentionally distance themselves from me;
rather, I distance myself from them.
What, then, can a teacher or friend do for me if I push them away?
Therefore, "being ignorant due to not finding a wise leader is because one has become
isolated from reality on their own."
Sang-wal : Gon-mong- ji-rin, Dok-won-sil-ya].
This scene expresses regret over the ignorant person's lack of an active willingness to learn.
Below, a disciple's response regarding Confucius's passion for learning help clarity
the meaninng of ' 困蒙(곤몽 -Gon-mong : lgnorance in Distress).'
" From whom and where did Confucius learn?"
To this, Zigong replied : " The teachings of King Wen and King Wu have not fallen to the ground.
The wise remember the greater parts, while the lesser remember the smaller parts;
thus, no one is without the teachings of King Wen and King Wu.
Therefore, where could our Master not have learned, anywhere?
And how could he have had only a fixed, single teacher?"
Confucius's lament continues:
"If someone is born into hardship yet does not try to learn,
such a person belongs to a class that is very difficult to evaluate."
Must a techer instruct only through words?
How does Heaven speak?
The four seasons cycle and all living things continue to thrive― how then does Heaven speak?
Toegye also recited '困蒙(곤몽 - Gon-mong).'
This is a case where 蒙(몽-Mong) transitions into 火水未濟(화수미제 -Hwa-Su-Mi-Je).
