Samsung, SK, AI startups try to gain upper hand
삼성, SK, AI 스타트업이 우위를 선점 시도
 
Since OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence (AI) service, ChatGPT, was unveiled last November, the field of AI services has seen an explosive increase in attention around the world.
OPenAI의 생성형 인공지능 서비스인 챗GPT가 지난 11월 공개된 이후 인공지능 서비스분야는 세계적인 주목속에 폭발적인 증가를 보였다.
 
Many people use the innovative technology simply for kicks or to ask for help in various subjects, including computer software programming, translation, web search and even writing novels and making music.
많은 사람들이 혁신적인 기술을 단순히 재미를 위해서 또는 컴퓨터 소프트웨어 프로그래밍, 번역, 웹서치, 소설쓰기, 작곡 등 다양한 주제에 대한 도움을 요청하기 위해 사용한다.

As shown by ChatGPT, the AI service is now penetrating into our daily lives and will be widely applied to various industrial sectors, while the technology is expected to trigger digital innovation commensurate with the emergence of the internet and smartphones, according to industry experts.
업계 전문가들에 따르면 이 기술은 인터넷과 스마트 폰의 출현에 상응하는 디지털 혁신을 촉발할 것으로 예상되지만, 챗GPT가 보여주듯 인공지능 서비스는 이제 우리 일상에 파고들고 있으며, 다양한 산업 분야에 폭넓게 적용될 것이다.
 
Although companies based in the United States are getting ahead quickly in the field of AI technology, experts say Korean companies involved in areas such as AI memory semiconductor manufacturing, chip design and Korean versions of generative AI services, should not be discouraged, because they have enough time to catch up.
미국에 본사를 둔 기업들이 인공지능 기술 분야에서 빠르게 앞서가고 있지만 전문가들은 인공지능 메모리 반도체 제조, 칩 설계, 한국판 생성형 인공지능 서비스 등과 같은 분야에 종사하는 한국 기업들은 시간이 충분하기 때문에 낙담해서는 안 된다고 말한다.

"I don't think ChatGPT alone will change the world" said David Chon, CEO of local AI startup, DMLab. But he added that the service is "a beginning of a new chapter in AI product generation."
“국내 인공지능 스타트업 DMLab의 데이비드 전 대표는 "챗GPT만으로는 세상을 바꿀 수 없다고 생각한다"고 말했다. 그러나 그는 이 서비스가 “인공지능 제품세대의 새장을 여는 시작” 이라고 덧붙였다.

"Until now, AI technology was mainly used to show what AI can potentially do. With ChatGPT, now AI technology is in a more complete format and can become integrated into our daily activities. I think this is why there is a global buzz around ChatGPT," Chon told The Korea Times.
“지금까지 인공지능 기술은 주로 인공지능이 잠재적으로 무엇을 할 수 있는지를 보여주기 위해 사용되었다. 챗GPT를 사용하면 이제 인공지능 기술이보다 완벽한 형식으로 되어 일상 활동에 통합될 수 있다. 나는 이것이 챗GPT 주변에 세계적인 유행이 있는 이유라고 생각한다,” 고 전대표는 코리아 타임즈에 말했다.
 
"I think it will quicken the pace of product development and become integrated into our daily lives faster," the CEO added.
“제품 개발 속도가 빨라지고 일상생활에 더 빠르게 녹아들 것 같다,” 고 CEO는 덧붙였다.

Kim Min-seok, business development manager at local AI chip design company, Furiosa AI, said that the successful rise of ChatGPT signals that AI services are now a new wave.
국내의 인공지능 칩 설계회사인 Furiosa AI의 김민석 비즈니스개발 매니저는 성공적인 챗GPT의 부상은 인공지능이 새로운 물결임을 시사한다고 말했다.
 
"I personally think that AI services will penetrate into every vertical market imaginable, across all horizontal functions in existence. OpenAI has recently begun the commercialization of ChatGPT and began offering ChatGPT API (application programing interface) to developers," Kim said.
“나는 개인적으로 AI 서비스가 존재하는 모든 수평적 기능에 걸쳐 상상할 수 있는 모든 수직적 시장에 침투할 것이라고 생각한다. OpenAI는 최근 챗GPT의 상용화를 시작했으며 개발자에게 챗GPT API (응용 프로그램 인터페이스)를 제공하기 시작했다,” 고 김 매니저는 말했다.

"This heralds a new age of tremendous potential and ChatGPT is just the start. Large tech companies and hyperscalers, including domestic players like Naver and Kakao, will soon release their own versions of ChatGPT," he added.
이것은 엄청난 잠재력의 새로운 시대를 예고하고 챗GPT는 단지 시작일 뿐이다. 네이버와 카카오 같은 국내 업체들을 포함한 대형 기술 회사들과 하이퍼스케일러들이 곧 그들만의 챗GPT 버전을 출시할 것이다.
 
Considering the fact that ChatGPT garnered over a million users since the service was opened on Nov. 30, Lee Sang-heon, a researcher at Hi Investment & Securities, said it can be highly utilized not only for the marketing and sales of products, but also for R&D, operations, corporate risk management and legal review.
지난 11월 30일 서비스 오픈 이후 챗GPT가 100만명 이상의 이용자를 확보한 점을 고려하면 제품의 마케팅 및 판매 뿐만 아니라 R & D, 운영, 기업 리스크 관리 및 법률 검토에도 활용 될 수 있다고 이상헌 하이 투자증권 연구위원은 말했다.
 
"The advent of web browsers in 1994, Google's search engine in 1998 and iPhone in 2007 changed the lives of people around the world and evolved the ecosystem of the information technology industry. In this regard, it should be noted in the future whether ChatGPT, which appeared last November, can become a game changer in the AI era while accelerating innovation in many industries," Lee said in the report.
“1994년 웹브라우저, 1998년 구글 검색엔진, 2007년 아이폰의 등장은 전 세계 사람들의 삶을 바꾸고 정보기술 산업의 생태계를 진화시켰다. 그런 점에서 지난해 11월 등장한 챗GPT가 많은 산업에서 혁신을 가속화하면서 AI 시대의 판도를 바꾸는 게임 체인저가 될 수 있을지 앞으로 주목해야 한다,” 고 이 연구위원은 보고서에서 말했다.

Korean firms to benefit from AI boom
인공지능 붐으로 혜택을 볼 한국기업들

Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Naver, Kakao and many AI startups here are also trying to capitalize on the AI boom, viewing the technology as a major business opportunity.
삼성전자, SK하이닉스, 네이버, 카카오 등 국내 많은 인공지능 스타트 업들도 이 기술을 주요 사업 기회로 보고 AI 붐을 활용하려 하고 있다.
 
Samsung and SK, the leading memory semiconductor makers, expect orders for high-performance memory chips, such as high bandwidth memory (HBM) DRAM, to increase because these next-generation chips will become essential in processing enormous amounts of data required by AI services.
메모리 반도체 선두주자인 삼성과 SK는 이러한 차세대 칩은 AI 서비스에 필요한 엄청난 양의 데이터를 처리하는 데 필수적이기 때문에 지난해 하반기부터 고대역폭 (HBM: High Bandwidth Memory) 메모리 D램 등 고성능 메모리 칩 수주를 기대하고 있다.
 
The performance of CPU and GPU has dramatically increased, but the improvement of memory chips that support these core processing units have been lagging behind. However, the companies believe that HBM will be used increasingly to resolve performance bottlenecks between CPU, GPU and memory chips.
CPU와 GPU의 성능은 비약적으로 상승했지만, 이러한 코어 프로세싱 유닛을 지원하는 메모리 칩의 개선은 뒤쳐지고 있었다. 그러나 회사들은 CPU, GPU 및 메모리 칩 간의 성능 병목 현상을 해결하기 위해 HBM이 점점 더 많이 사용될 것으로 믿고 있습니다.

Samsung, the world's leading memory chipmaker, already developed HBM-PIM technology, in conjunction with U.S.-based chip design company AMD last October, which combines memory chips with AI processors. SK hynix is also responding to growing demand for high-performance memory chips by supplying its HBM3 chips to Nvidia since last June.
세계적인 메모리 반도체 업체인 삼성은 이미 지난해 10월 미국의 반도체 설계회사 AMD와 공동으로 메모리 칩과 AI 프로세서를 결합한 HBM-PIM 기술을 개발했다. SK하이닉스도 지난해 6월부터 자사의 HBM3 칩을 엔비디아에 공급하며 고성능 메모리 칩 수요 증가에 대응하고 있다.
 
In addition, Naver and Kakao, the two major internet companies here, recently said they will release their own ChatGPT-like services, claiming that their generative AI model can understand the Korean language better than any other AI service.
더불어, 국내 양대 인터넷 기업인 네이버와 카카오는 최근 자신들의 생성 AI 모델이 한국어를 이해할 수 있다고 주장하며 자체적인 챗GPT와 같은 서비스를 출시하겠다고 밝혔다.

Startups like Furiosa AI are also gaining attention from investors as WarBoy, an AI chip developed by the company, showed better performance than Nvidia at the MLPerf AI chip contest last September in terms of image classification and objection detection.
퓨리오사 AI와 같은 스타트업도 이 회사가 개발한 AI 칩인 워보이가 작년 9월에 열린 MLPerf AI 칩 콘테스트의 이미지식별, 목표물 탐색 분야에서 더 나은 성능을 보여 투자자들의 주목을 받고 있다.

"FuriosaAI designs neural processing units (NPU), simply known as an AI chip. NPUs are designed to accelerate AI applications, and more specifically, deep neural networks. There are many different types of AI applications, including natural language processing, computer vision and recommendation. Many of these applications have tremendous potential to be adapted and applied across almost all vertical industries," Kim at Furiosa AI said.

The government is also showing a lot of interest in the ChatGPT-led AI boom, saying the technology could change the entire landscape of different industries.
정부도 이 기술이 다른 산업의 전체 판도를 바꿀 수 있다며 챗GPT가 주도하는 AI 붐에 많은 관심을 보이고 있다.

"ChatGPT will be a signal that AI is penetrating into our daily lives," Lee Jong-ho, ICT minister said on Feb. 22 during a meeting with company officials and academic experts in Seoul. "The government will spare no support in helping domestic companies maximize their digital capabilities to lead the hyperscale AI market."
“챗GPT는 AI가 우리의 일상생활에 침투하고 있다는 신호가 될 것이다,” 라고 이종호 과학기술정보통신부 장관은 2월 22일 서울에서 회사 관계자들과 학계 전문가들과 만난 자리에서 말했다. “정부는 국내 기업이 디지털 역량을 극대화해 초대형 AI 시장을 선도할 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않을 방침이다.”
