♥ 지극(至極, extreme)히 작은 것에 감사하라.(Be grateful for the smallest thing.) ♥

옛날 독일에서 있었던 이야기 입니다. 어느 해인가 그 땅에 극심한 흉년(極甚 한 凶年, a severe famine)이 들었습 니다. 그래서 많은 사람들이 굶주리게 되었습니다.(It's a story that happened back in Germany. One year there was a severe famine in the land. So many people became hungry.)

그때 어떤 돈많은 노인 부부가 날마다 빵을 만들어서 동네 어린 아이들에게 나누어 주었습니다. (At that time, a rich old couple made bread every day and distributed it to young children in the neighborhood.)

그들은 아이들로 하여금 매번 빵을 한 개 씩만 가지고 가도록 했습니다. 그러다 보니까
아이들은 서로 조금이라도 더커 보이는 빵을 차지하겠다고 난리를 떨었습니다.(They made the children take only one piece of bread each time. So the kids were making a fuss about taking over the bread that looked even bigger.)

그러나 그 가운데서 한 여자아이 만큼은 예외였습니다. 언제나 맨 끝에 섰습니다. 자연히 그 아이에 게 돌아가는 빵은 항상제일 작은 것이었습니다.(But one girl was the exception. I'm at the very end. The bread that naturally goes back to the child was always the smallest.)

아이들은 저마다 더 큰빵을 차지하는 것에 정신이 팔려서 자기에게 빵을 나누어 준 노인 부부에게, 고맙다는 말조차도 제대로 할 겨를이 없었습니다. (The children were distracted by the larger bread and gave it to the elderly couple who gave it to them, I didn't even have time to say thank you properly.)

그러나 그 여자아이는 제일 작은 빵을 차지하면서도 언제나 깍듯하게 그 노인 부부에게 감사하다고, 말하는 것을 잊지 않았습니다.(But the girl always graciously thanked the old couple while taking up the smallest piece of bread, I didn't forget to say it.)

그러던 어느 날이었습니다. 그날따라 그 여자 아이에게 돌아온 빵은 유난히 더 작아 보였습니다.(Then it was one day. The bread returned to the girl that day looked exceptionally smaller.)

그럼에도 불구하고 그 여자 아이는 여느 때와 마찬가지로 노인 부부에게 빵을 주셔서 감사하다고, 마음에서 우러나는 말 을 하고서 집으로 돌아갔습니다.(Nevertheless, the girl thanked the elderly couple for the bread as usual, I said something from the bottom of my heart and went back home.)

여자 아이는 집에 와서 빵을 먹으려고 하다가 그만 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 빵 속에 금화(金貨, gold currency) 한 닢이 들어 있었기 때문입니다.( The girl comes home and tries to eat breadI was surprised. Because there was gold in the bread.)

그 옆의 메모지에는 이렇게 적혀 있었습 니다. ˝이것은 너처럼 작은 것 일지라도 잊지 않고 감사하는 사람을 위해서 우리 가 마련한 선물이란다."(The note next to it said. ˝This is a gift we have prepared for someone who doesn't forget and appreciates, even if it's small like you.")

˝오늘도 상대방의 입장을 헤아려 주는 넓은 마음을 가진 하루가 되시기를 응원(應援, support) 합니다."(˝I hope you have a broad-minded day that understands the other person's position.")
