I have explained the history of Korean Buddhism, in which it differentiated into the theories of sudden enlightenment followed by gradual cultivation (Don-o-jeom-su) and sudden enlightenment followed by sudden cultivation (Don-o-don-su-ron), and argued over the right and wrong of these views. I stated that sudden enlightenment followed by sudden cultivation applies only to a select few who have received the Mandate of Heaven, while ordinary people can attain enlightenment through sudden enlightenment followed by gradual cultivation (Don-o-jeom-su). Just as principles have advantages and disadvantages in terms of time and differences in elevation in terms of space, success is achieved individually in proportion to the effort put in.
This meaning is clearly contained within the character *Jeom*. As a compound character formed from the radical for water (*Su*), the cart (*Cha*), and the john (*Jin*), water—the source of all things—moves ceaselessly. It descends and flows. It rises as steam, drifts in all directions with the wind following the clouds, and descends to the ground in all directions. Fundamentally, it traverses time and space.
In other words, it signifies that while the universe rolls like a cart—known as the "Wheel of Heaven and Earth"—differences arise according to the center of gravity (the passage of the wheel of years). A noble person, by fully mastering the governance of heaven and earth and the myriad phenomena of the universe, understands all affairs of the world, communicates with all things, and becomes capable of varying degrees of spirituality. However, the saying is that even a sage, during the initial stage, gradually evolved and developed to reach a state of capability, and only upon appearing in the next life did he finally attain enlightenment through the realm of sudden enlightenment and sudden cultivation.
That sage taught that the Heavenly Stems embody the energy of Heaven, and the Twelve Earthly Branches contain the principles of Earthly Energy. In other words, Hanul, having manifested the myriad phenomena through the earth in the form of matter, has contained its inner truth within the characters of the Twelve Earth Branches as symbolic numbers.
Heaven opens in the Child. The Child is the first odd-numbered Earth Branch and represents the First One Great Ultimate. The character consists of three strokes. This signifies the One Dividing into Three Extremes, representing the Three Powers of Heaven, Earth, and Man, and the Thought of the Three Heavens and Three Gods. It signifies the meaning of "three migrations to attain the Way," and also the meaning of "husband and wife and son."
Therefore, it is water, which is the source of all things. It signifies the beginning and symbolizes the first in the meanings of atom, cause, seed, electron, Son of Heaven, noble person, molecule, photon, etc. It also carries meanings such as person, commoners, teacher, you, title (viscount), self-proclaimed, child, fruit, reproduction, love, children, midnight, and the month of the winter solstice.
If represents the Heaven and the Three Heavens, then the second Earth Branch, 丑, represents the Earth and the Four Earths, consisting of four strokes. It is the phrase (Jibyeoeochuk). The Three Heavens and the Four Earths meet to form the Parents of Heaven and Earth; thus, Zi and Chou combine to become Earth.
Consequently, directions arise from the earth, and the four cardinal directions and the four seasons pair up to form the seasons. Therefore, Yuan, Heng, Li, and Zhen are the constants of the Way of Heaven and circulate through the four seasons.
Thus, humanity comes to survive by following the fundamental principles of human nature: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom.
Heaven and Earth bring all things into harmony through the Way of Unrestricted Faith. Therefore, humans are active using their four limbs: two hands and two feet. All things exist through the Four Symbols. The Three Heavens and Four Earths meet and transform into Seven Fires, forming a cycle; this is called the Creation of the Seven Stars. As the multiplier of the Three Heavens and Four Earths, there are twelve months, which constitute a year. These become the Twelve Stars of Heaven and the Twelve Directions of Earth, acting as the Twelve Divine Killings of Humanity.
Heaven and Earth gave birth to humankind; man arises from the Tiger. The Tiger consists of eleven strokes. It is the manifestation of a scholar on earth through the Elevenfold Enlightenment.
Combined with the radical for a single point, the radical for a brimming hair, the radical for one, the radical for origin, and the radical for eight, the One Person, representing the One Great Ultimate of the Universe, wears a crown because he is born of the Eight Trigrams of the Book of Changes; thus, it is a character signifying a scholar who has attained enlightenment on earth, and it represents a tiger speaking on behalf of the Mountain God. It carries meanings such as being large, advancing, and pulling, as well as the meanings of fellow official, colleague, and reverence. In particular, since it signifies the Northeast, it symbolizes Korea in the Northeast direction; thus, the native Korean tiger is the supreme animal in the world, and consequently, the forehead of the native Korean tiger forms the pattern of the character for King (Wang). It is the Earth God (Gijisin) and is represented by the character In ; following the Heavenly Rat and Earthly Ox, In represents Man, symbolizing a human being.
The fourth of the Twelve Earthly Branches, paired with In, is Mao. With the Five Elements, things are born in the Rabbit. It is the due east of the sunrise. As the sun rises, all living beings are created and come into existence, thus completing the earthly world.
However, until now, it was the Era of the Pre-Heavenly Venerable, and because it was incomplete, it is the Era of the Three Enclosures of Heaven. This refers to the Era of the Purple Subtle Enclosure, the Great Subtle Enclosure, and the Heavenly Market Enclosure. In the future, when Heaven and Earth unite in virtue to form a Heavenly Kingdom on Earth, the Shaowei Yuan is added, leading to the Era of the Four Enclosures; thus, the appearance of Mao as the master of the world is referred to in the I Ching as "The Emperor Appears from the Earth."
The phrase "Observing the Arrowhead of Yi, the Bird's Arrowhead of Yi" signifies that Jia becomes Yi, which means that Yin (the Tiger) transforms into a Rabbit. It is the Five Strokes, the Number of the Yellow Ultimate; the Four Symbols operate as the Five Elements, with the Central Earth taking the lead. The Four Directions encompass the Center to become the Five Directions.
Human nature adds faith to become Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom, and Faith, and becomes the Unbridled Spiritual Path.
It forms the Five Flavors, Five Colors, Five Sensations, and Five Internal Organs. Only when the character (five) with five strokes emerges, allowing the numbers of five to each form Yin and Yang and give rise to the decimal system; thus, the symbolic numbers that measure the principles of all things are finally completed.
The following phrase, which Pyeongso Mogudangju usually regards as important, is the spirit of the noble person who will become a worker for the affairs of the world.
Righteousness and great virtue, all matters will return to righteousness; life rises from the heights of hardship; advancing one step from the top of a hundred-foot pole, advancing one step from the peak of Mount Tai; he who humbles himself can surround the multitude; a family that accumulates good deeds will surely have abundant blessings; the way I practice good is my enemy, the way I practice evil is my teacher; man devises schemes to kill, and heaven and earth repeat them. If you gain absolute advantage from a single source, you will use your troops tenfold; if you repeat it three times, you will use your troops ten thousandfold.
