BEIJING -- After a weekend of violence between their two countries, athletes representing Russia and Georgia on Wednesday found themselves in the surreal position of competing head-to-head in one of the most violent Olympic sports -- judo -- and perhaps the most party-like -- beach volleyball.

Georgia won both contests, including a judo semifinal that eventually led the country to take home its second gold medal of the Beijing Games.

At both matches, athletes and audiences alike were at pains to keep politics at a minimum. "When we play against Russia, every time it is something a little more than just playing a game," said Georgian team press officer Georgi Tchanishvili. "But sports is just sports," he added.

During her match, Brazilian-born Georgian volleyball player Cristine "Saka" Santanna, embraced her Russian opponent on the playing field. "I wanted to show that the Olympics are above politics and I wanted to display a sign of peace," she said. "I respect them as players."

In the judo match, Georgia's Irakli Tsirekidze quickly dispatched Russia's Ivan Pershin, and there was little partisan cheering from the audience. The crowd rallied behind underdog Georgia, occasionally cheering "Georgia jia you." ("Go for it, Georgia.")

The game was punctuated with snippets of beach and reggae music, as well as regular performances by blue bikini-clad cheerleaders. The Russian team rejected questions about how the match was representative of the war. "They aren't Georgian, they're Brazilian," said Ms. Uryadova.

Both Georgian volleyball players were born in Brazil and emigrated to Georgia about three years ago. "I felt more Georgian today," said Ms. Santanna.

Deadly conflict between Georgia and Russia broke out last Friday as the Beijing Olympics began. After preparing to leave the Olympics because of the conflict, the 35-member Georgian team was persuaded on Sunday to go on competing against -- and living near -- Russians.
