Revelation 3:14~22 – The background, history and meaning of the church in Laodicea that existed at AD 27~100
○ Laodicea, geographically located at an important transportation hub, produced good quality black wool and cotton and was famous for weaving and dyeing, so there was no need to be naked. The Jews who immigrated here had a lot of goods and gold because they were engaged in banking and usury. So they were rich enough to donate 9 kg of gold to Jerusalem every year.
○ Mineral hot spring water from Hierapolis (Colossians 4:13), 6.5 kilometers from Laodicea, flowed into Laodicea through an aqueduct, and the hot spring water that arrived here at Laodicea cooled down to be neither hot nor cold. The lukewarm water, in which minerals were thickly dissolved, was good for bathing, but when drinking, as it was unpleasant to the stomach, so it immediately caused vomiting. In this parable, Jesus is saying, “because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am about to spit you out of my mouth”. Here, ‘lukewarm’ means that the faith of the church in Laodicea is neither hot nor cold.
○ The mineral hot spring water helped in the treatment of diseases. Specially, Laodicea was famous for producing special medicines for treating ear diseases and eye drops (or eyesalve or eye ointment) called Colonion or Phrygian powder for treating the acquired and the congenital blind. As a result, Laodicea had gained a reputation as a medical city.
○ Ruins of the church in Laodicea - Laodicea does not exist today, but was completely destroyed and buried underground during the earthquakes of 1710 and 1899. The place that seems to be the site of a church here is also unknown: when and what kind of church site it was. The reason why it is presumed to be a church is because there are stones with cross patterns that could have been used in churches.
○ The background of the early church in Laodicea - In the days of the early church, the central church in this region was in Colossae, but because the capital of Phrygia (Acts 16:6, 18:23) was Laodicea, Epaphras pioneered three churches and pastored there at Colossae, Hierapolis, and Laodicea (Colossians 1:7, 4:12~13). The Apostle Paul (AD 5~68) mentioned the church of Laodicea four times in his <Colossians> and was paying attention to the Laodicean church (Colossians 2:1, 4:13~16). [Reference: Book of Revelation OBS textbook (by Son Jin-gil) - Book of Revelation Lesson 9 (3:14~22)]. <Colossians> is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Colossae during his first imprisonment (house arrest, AD 5~68) in Rome.
