A key factor in the RTAF’s selection of the Gripen E/F over the Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Blk. 70/72 was the platform’s promise of sovereign capabilities and operational independence.
“As it is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft available, with sensitive Swedish and Thai equipment, there will be consultation between Sweden and Thailand to discuss what can or cannot be used [in exercises with China],” Joakim Wallin, head of international relations at Sweden’s defense materiel administration FMV, told reporters during a briefing in Bangkok June 4.
Thailand has previously operated its Gripen C/D fighters and Erieye airborne early warning system in Falcon Strike exercises with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, training alongside or against Chinese platforms such as the Chengdu J-10, J-15 and KJ-500 AEW. The 2025 iteration of the exercise will take place in August.
Saab estimates its offset program—comprising seven direct program-related and seven indirect national-level projects—will deliver a return on investment of at least 100% of the Gripen E/F contract’s value.
“We’ll facilitate a wide range of foreign direct investments. Foreign direct investments contribute to Thai economic development by establishing or expanding production capabilities. This will include manufacturing, healthcare, green technology, agriculture and forestry,” said Lars Tossman, Saab's head of aeronautics.
“We will build a cyber academy, a cyber range operations, helping Thailand to become more self-sufficient and secure against cyber threats,” Tossman continued, noting additional higher-education initiatives planned for Thai nationals.

중국과의 훈련을 제한하기 전에, 중국제 전투기와 함께 운용하는 샤브사 조기경보기가 파키스탄에 있는데, 그걸 먼저 제한해야 한다고 봅니다..ㅎㅎ
