마송, 레몽, 그리고 나는 우리가 함께 공동 출자로 바닷가에서 8월을 보내려는 계획을 세웠다. 마리가 갑자기 우리에게 말했다: “지금 몇 시인지 알고들 있어요? 11시 반이에요.” 우리는 모두 놀랐으나 마송은 우리가 너무 일찍 먹었다고, 그리고 점심시간은 배가 고플 시간이기 때문에 당연하다고 말했다.

Masson, Raymond et moi, nous avons envisagé de passer ensemble le mois d’août à la plage, à frais communs. Marie nous a dit tout d’un coup : « Vous savez quelle heure il est ? Il est onze heures et demie. » Nous étions tous étonnés, mais Masson a dit qu’on avait mangé très tôt, et que c’était naturel parce que l’heure du déjeuner, c’était l’heure où l’on avait faim.

마송과 레몽과 나는 공동 비용으로 8월을 바닷가에서 함께 보내기로 계획했다. 마리가 갑자기 우리에게 말했다. “몇 시인지 아세요? 11시 반이에요.” 모두가 놀랐지만, 마송은 식사를 매우 일찍 하기는 했지만 식사 시간이란 곧 배가 고픈 시간이니까 이상할 게 하나도 없다고 했다.

Masson, Raymond, and I talked about spending August together at the beach, sharing expenses. Suddenly Marie said, “Do you know what time it is? It’s only eleven-thirty!” We were all surprised, but Masson said that we’d eaten very early and that it was only natural because lunchtime was whenever you were hungry.

Masson, Raymond und ich sprachen dann davon, den Monat August auf gemeinsame Kosten am Meer zu verbringen. Plötzlich sagte Maria: «Wißt ihr auch, wieviel Uhr es ist? Je ne sais pas pourquoi cela a fait rire Marie. Je crois qu’elle avait un peu trop bu. Masson m’a demandé alors si je voulais me promener sur la plage avec lui. « Ma femme fait toujours la sieste après le déjeuner. Moi, je n’aime pas ça. Il faut que je marche. Je lui dis toujours que c’est meilleur pour la santé. Mais après tout, c’est son droit. » Marie a déclaré qu’elle resterait pour aider Mme Masson à faire la vaisselle. La petite Parisienne a dit que pour cela, il fallait mettre les hommes dehors. Nous sommes descendus tous les trois.

For some reason that made Marie laugh. I think she’d had a little too much to drink. Then Masson asked me if I wanted to go for a walk on the beach with him. “My wife always takes a nap after lunch. Me, I don’t like naps. I need to walk. I tell her all the time it’s better for her health. But it’s her business.” Marie said she’d stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes. The little Parisienne said that first they’d have to get rid of the men. The three of us went down to the beach.

Wir drei gingen an den Strand.

Le soleil tombait presque d’aplomb sur le sable et son éclat sur la mer était insoutenable. Il n’y avait plus personne sur la plage. Dans les cabanons qui bordaient le plateau et qui surplombaient la mer, on entendait des bruits d’assiettes et de couverts. On respirait à peine dans la chaleur de pierre qui montait du sol. Pour commencer, Raymond et Masson ont parlé de choses et de gens que je ne connaissais pas.

태양이 거의 수직으로 모래 위에 떨어졌고, 바다 위에 반사되는 햇빛은 견딜 수 없을 정도로 강렬했다. 바닷가에는 이제 아무도 없었다. 고원 가장자리를 따라 바다 위로 불쑥 나와 있는 별장들 안에서 접시, 식기, 포크, 나이프 등이 부딪치는 소리가 들렸다. 땅에서 올라오는 돌의 열기 때문에 숨쉬기조차 힘들었다. 처음에 레몽과 마송은 내가 모르는 일과 사람들 이야기를 했다.

The sun was shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare on the water was unbearable. There was no one left on the beach. From inside the bungalows bordering the plateau and jutting out over the water, we could hear the rattling of plates and silverware. It was hard to breathe in the rocky heat rising from the ground. At first Raymond and Masson discussed people and things I didn’t know about.

J’ai compris qu’il y avait longtemps qu’ils se connaissaient et qu’ils avaient même vécu ensemble à un moment. Nous nous sommes dirigés vers l’eau et nous avons longé la mer. Quelquefois, une petite vague plus longue que l’autre venait mouiller nos souliers de toile. Je ne pensais à rien parce que j’étais à moitié endormi par ce soleil sur ma tête nue.

I gathered they’d known each other for a long time and had even lived together at one point. We headed down to the sea and walked along the water’s edge. Now and then a little wave would come up higher than the others and wet our canvas shoes. I wasn’t thinking about anything, because I was half asleep from the sun beating down on my bare head.

À ce moment, Raymond a dit à Masson quelque chose que j’ai mal entendu. Mais j’ai aperçu en même temps, tout au bout de la plage et très loin de nous, deux Arabes en bleu de chauffe qui venaient dans notre direction. J’ai regardé Raymond et il m’a dit : « C’est lui. » Nous avons continué à marcher. Masson a demandé comment ils avaient pu nous suivre jusque-là. J’ai pensé qu’ils avaient dû nous voir prendre l’autobus avec un sac de plage, mais je n’ai rien dit.

At that point Raymond said something to Masson which I didn’t quite catch. But at the same time I noticed, at the far end of the beach and a long way from us, two Arabs in blue overalls coming in our direction. I looked at Raymond and he said, “It’s him.” We kept walking. Masson asked how they’d managed to follow us all this way. I thought they must have seen us get on the bus with a beach bag, but I didn’t say anything.

In diesem Augenblick sagte Masson etwas zu Raymond, das ich nicht ganz verstand.
