Hexagram 4 : Meng(Monutain over Water / Youthful Folly)
▣ Six in the fifth position: Childlke folly brings good fortune.
[Explanation]
Six in the fifth position: Serving an elder like an innocent child brings good fortune.
[Commentary]
Even while in a high position, seeking instruction with humble attitude like Dong-mong
(童蒙,동몽 -an innocent youth) brings good fortune.
Even from a position of power, one humbly asks for guidance from subordinates.
A hill is higher than the ground, but lower than the peak.
Even a ruler does not know everything.
There are many elders who possess greater insight and experience than the ruler.
In such times, the ruler's attitude is what matters.
One must honestly admit what they do not know and seek wisdom and experience.
Respectfully requesting valuable opinions with a gentle demeanor is what truly befits a ruler.
The ruler possesses the blessings of ruler-ship,
while sages possess the blessings of wisdom and experience that enlighten the world.
Ehch must acknowledge the other's position and given blessings.
The rule of moral learning is simply to approach it with an attitude of obedience.
Therefore, Confucius commented :
"'The good fortune of Dong-mong' comes from being compliant and submissve."
Suhyeon Seok Ji-hyeong stated in the O-Wi-Gwi-Gam(오위귀감) :
"Since ancient times, sacred rulers never lacked a teacher,
and a wise ruler should practice the humility of obtaining a teacher on his own."
This 'gentle and compliant attitude of Dong-mong(童蒙,동몽)'
was praised by Ji-wuk as "the noble attitude of a great person who has not lost
the heart of an innocent child."
Thus, being close to the Sttict Master [Nine at the top] above,
and close to the Good Friend[Nine in the second position] below,
makes the learner's attitude fortunate.
This is no different from the saying, " When three people walk together,
there is bound to be a teacher among them."
The term Dong-mong in works like Dongmongseonseup, Dongmonggyogwan,
and Dongmonghun transitions into the Pung-Su-Hwan(Wind over Water) hexagram.
