In retrospect, my fault, lack of enlightenment and wandering
seem unforgivable but I find forvgiveness for them
grow in my grandkids next to me every day.
As I wallow in the swamp of sadness over things I've lost to time
or seized by memories of hard days, my grandkids pull me out
of the swamp like a magic to lead me to sudden happiness,
who are my eternal happiness-keepers and undeserved blessings
to which I must pay gratitude forever.
Long time ago my old teacher said:
one can appreciate Lee Mija's song
only when one gets old, when I failed
to understand what he was talking about.
I'd always thought her song boring and drowsy,
but a few days ago, I happened to hear her sing,
fascinated by her doleful and beautiful voice.
Her clear high, gentle low tone
and her doleful appeal cut into my heart;
What has happened to me in the meantime?
Yes, now I have reached my old teacher's age
and get impresed by her song as he was,
for I am involuntarily walking the very path
that my long-deceased teacher walked long ago.
In the prime of their lives
humans bear and rear their kids
with all their heart, marrying them
one by one in autumn of their lives.
Likewise, trees draw sap from earth
to grow leaves even in summer storm;
and now they are dropping them
one by one in the cold autumn wind.
As married children hang around their parents,
fallen leaves hang around trees
until the wind forces them to leave.
As lonely parents miss their children,
so will trees miss the leaves they have dropped.
And as married children miss their lonely parents,
so will the fallen leaves miss the trees they left.
That's why fallen leaves rustle like that,
to the sad chirping of the cricket
in the crescent moon of cold autumn night.
The summer at my age seven
was hot like this summer.
Under the scorching sun,
Mother was weeding in the field
wearing a white towel around her head,
and I was scything cow-herbage nearby.
No matter how hard I scythed,
the herbage I reaped fell short of
Mother-Cow's one-time snack;
so, I put my scythe in the mesh bag,
threw myself in the icy-cold streamwater
to find myself in heaven I sought in the sun.
Mother, after weeding all day long under the hot sun,
held my hand in hers that got rougher during the day
and walked with me along ridges between ricefields,
as darkness fell like a puppy tagging along his master.
Arriving at home, Mother made me bend forward,
drew cold water from the well and washed my back
with her hands coarse like pine-bark, when she said,
"Thanks for your effort, my baby."
Her words made me follow her to the field the next day.
It was more fun to catch frog or mudfish
with my friends in the water
but I followed her to the field
because I was concerned about her
weeding alone the wide field all day long
and her being scared of lonely way back
along the dark ridge between ricefields.
By the time the summer ended,
I got tanned so much that villagers mocked me
that I was an African black child,
but Mother loved me all the more, saying,
"My little black cute baby."
Mother went further than giving me flesh and blood;
she taught me the indomitable spirit to do quitely
what I must do even in such a sweltering heat.
She has gone to the place I cannot reach
no matter how hard I may try,
but her blood still runs in my blood vessel,
her spirit still helping me overcome scorching heat.
Summer heat is in full swing,
draining my energy every moment.
Perhaps it foretells the future of the world
gradually changing to a place harder to live in.
The scorching heat I can't avoid anyhow
makes me think death might be better.
My one-year-old grandson shouts for joy
dragging his toy car all over my house,
feeling no heat at all.
He expresses the joy of being in this world
with his lively movement and rapturous shout.
In the scorching weather,
my grandson makes me realize
this world might be the only livable and blessed place,
infusing power into me to overcome the intense heat.
A candlelight burning early and quickly goes out early;
A candlelight burning late and slowly lasts long.
Alexander the Great who asked Diogenes his wish
built up a great empire of vast land in a decade
but died an untimely death at the age of 33
and his empire broke up after his death.
However, Digenes who practised celibacy and self-sufficiency
lived happily to be 77 equivalent to 100 by today's standard.
Time doesn't side with a man making a rush but with the one
who lives patiently waiting for opportunity taking his time.
Let's believe in a late bloomer,
taking slow and steady steps like a cow's
and having vigilant eyes like a tiger's.
Among difficulties of life, there are ones we create ourselves
as well as ones the world imposes on us.
Let's not make a self-inflicted bad move as in go game.
Time deprives us of our youth, love and passion
and sometimes our precious fortunre,
but let's not fall into trap of grief,
keeping calm and composure using our loss
as chance for growing our wisdom and insight,
for we can't retrieve what we've lost to time
unless we borrow the power of God.
If we yield even our calm and composure to time,
we'll be at the mercy of wild waves in the sea of regret
not only while we're alive but when we're a soul after death.
You and I met a long time ago.
You expected too much of me
and I was just an immature child.
The river of anguish and agony
kept flowing until it reached estuary
and vanished into the sea of oblivion,
leaving a quiet smile of tolerance and resignation
Honey, I am sorry for the troubles you went through.
If I live even a day longer than my natural span of life,
it will be solely because of you.
1
If man trains himself enough,
he can catch a tiger with bare hands.
2
If man fails to control himself
he fails to control his life, too.
3
Surface does not always accord with its substance.
Just an illusin often lurks behind a plausible surface;
A humble surface often covers a solid substance.
Most people fall for surface but the few wise
see substance behind surface.
4
A leader, who glosses over the bad result of everything he did,
making a plausible excuse and innocent face without clarifying
who's responsible for it, leads the country to ruination,
but a leader, who tells his opinion so bluntly as to hurt people's
feelings but can accurately predict the result of everything
leading the country with insight into future, makes people rich.
5
A household head, who suggests to live in comfort
thinking his family rich enough, makes his family poor;
A household head, who suggests to be thrifty and frugal
to prepare for rainy days, makes his family rich.
6
Parents who just make their children's life comfortable
end up spoiling them, but parents who don't spare
a whip on their children to make them walk the straght
end up raising them well.
7
He who sees his deed from other's viewpoint
and takes good care of the latter is a good man;
He who gratifies his desire without seeing his deed
from other's viewpoint is an evil man.
A good man strives to perfect his personality
by correcting his fault through self-reflection;
An evil man destroys his personality
by harming others to fulfil his selfish needs.
8
A great man corrects his fault
before others point it out for him;
An ordinary man tries to correct his fault
when others point it out for him;
But a little man ignores his fault being pointed out,
overlooking the countless who shed tears and blood
due to it for the reason that he must hold the course.
9
A leader who saves his country from difficulty is the one
who suggests to join forces in the march of ordeal,
but a leader who ruins his country is the one
who seeks just public popularity even in difficulty.
doing nothing. I'm built this way, so, I'll live this way until I die.
