Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:14~22 - To the Church in Laodicea - Lukewarm faith and naked church, Receiving Only Rebuke and discipline from Jesus
Revelation 3:15~16 – You are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth
☞ Revelation 3:15 - I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! (NIV); I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. (KJV); "I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! (NLT); I know what you do [your works], that you are not hot or cold. I wish that you were hot or cold [ both positive images, alluding to cold refreshing mountain streams and healing hot springs near Laodicea]!(EXB)
3:16 - So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth. (NIV); So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (KJV); But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! (NLT); But because you are lukewarm—neither hot, nor cold—I am ready to spit [vomit] you out of my mouth.(EXB)
○ Jesus is referring to the mineral hot spring water, arrived at Laodicea from Hierapolis, then cooled down to lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. ‘Neither hot nor cold’ means that the act of faith is neither righteous nor unrighteous. It is neither 'Yes' nor 'No'. It refers to the lukewarm faith that maintains neutrality in a state of neither believing nor disbelieving.
○ The lukewarm water rich in dissolved minerals was good for bathing, but when drinking, as it was unpleasant to the stomach, and it immediately caused vomiting. Jesus uses this as a parable to rebuke the church in Laodicea, saying, "I am about to spit you out of my mouth“.
☞ This is the part where we can see that those who cannot choose between truth or false, good or evil, righteous or unrighteous, and right or wrong, and those who remain neutral, are spitting out of the mouth of Jesus Christ.
○ So, what causes the faith of belief and deeds to become lukewarm? Why do we become naked when we become lukewarm? The answer is in the next verse.
