Statement of the Association of Writers for National Literature (AWNL) of Korea on Myanmar’s military coup.
A military coup took place in Myanmar on February 1, and even at this moment, many Myanmar citizens are dying amidst the bloodshed. In the May of 1980, there was the Gwangju massacre in Korea by Chun Doo-hwan’s military regime. And today in the February of 2021, Myanmar citizens are suffering similar pain. We hope Myanmar will not relapse back to the military dictatorship of 1988 and 2007. We hope that Myanmar will be an open democratic society where Myanmar citizens and Koreans can freely visit each other. We are eager to join forces with Myanmar's democratic citizens in their fight. The democratic citizens of Korea and the International Committee of AWNL along with other Korean organizations of the same heart would like to join forces with Myanmar taking democratic action.
Novelists Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, André Malo, photographer Robert Capa, and painter Pablo Picasso joined the Spanish Civil War to be with the suffering Catalan citizens. Though it is difficult to communicate directly with Myanmar writers, we will do everything we can for Myanmar’s democracy, whether on the Internet or from Korea. For Myanmar’s democracy, we will actively appeal Myanmar’s situation to domestic and international public opinion in unity with Myanmar’s civic groups in Korea. To realize democracy in Myanmar, AWNL writers will carry out activities through literature writing, poem recitation, publication and sending donations, supporting Myanmar’s democratic citizens. For Myanmar’s democracy, we will also unite with Myanmar’s democratic citizens till the end.
We demand that
1. Myanmar’s military regime immediately stop the massacre and release government leaders and detainees, including Aung San Suu Kyi.
2. The military regime acknowledge the results of the November 2020 general election and immediately return the power to the civilian government.
3. The international community, the Korean government and international businesses reconsider their relationship with Myanmar's military government and maximally cooperate for Myanmar's democracy.
