Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:14~22 - To the Church in Laodicea - Lukewarm faith and naked church, Receiving Only Rebuke and discipline from Jesus
Revelation 3:17 – (1) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked
☞ Revelation 3:17 - You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. (NIV); Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (KJV); You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. (NLT)
○ Laodicea, geographically located at an important transportation hub, produced high-quality black wool and cotton and was famous for weaving and dyeing, so there was no need to be naked. The Jews who immigrated here had a lot of goods and gold because they were engaged in banking and usury. So they were rich enough to donate 9 kg of gold to Jerusalem every year.
○ So, the church in Laodicea called themselves rich, and said that they were rich and lacked nothing. The members of the church in Laodicea thought to themselves, “I am rich, but it is I who made me rich.” This means 'I am satisfied with myself while boasting to others by becoming rich with my own power’.
☞ This is the same meaning that Ephraim boasted in <Hosea> 12:8, the Old Testament, it reads, “I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin“(NIV). [Reference: Classic Country - Pastor Seongsu Kim's Revelation (26) - Letter to the Lion of Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22)].
○ The members of the church in Laodicea, who became rich in this way, became lukewarm in their faith of belief and deeds. As members of the church, they continued to worship God, but it was only formality and appearance. The Bible was always open, but they were blinded by rich, so they could not see the words of the Bible, namely, the truth. They always went out to the church and donated a lot of offerings (or money), but it was for the honor and face of the rich. In the end, their faith took a backseat to money and material, and their faith became lukewarm, neither hot nor cold.
