(English)
On the day when Mogudangmo performed miraculous feats with celestial men and women centered around Nandeok, who sat on the celestial seat in the clouds during her ascetic practice at dawn on the Friday of Gihae, she went to Jikjisa Temple at the foot of Mt. Hwangak. The name Jikjisa is derived from the phrase "Jikji Insim Gyeonseong Seongbul" (Directly pointing to the human mind to see one's true nature and attain Buddhahood), which is a transcendental principle of the Upper Vehicle school of Seon located at the foot of Mt. Hwangak. Originally, Jikji means receiving direct revelation from a divine being. For example, the *Jikjiwonjin*, a geomancy text based on the *Li-Qi* method, is called *Jikjiwonjin* because it was directly transmitted to and received from an immortal by Great Master Cheolyeong, a descendant of Confucius.
At Jikjisa Temple, one must pass through *Jahamun*, then *Daeyangmun*, and finally *Geumgangmun* to reach the *Sacheonwangmun* (Gate of the Four Heavenly Kings). Since *Jahamun* means the northwest gate of *Changuimun*, it signifies the gate leading to the Western Pure Land. According to the principles of the Luoshu, the Northwest corresponds to the Qian direction and signifies Heaven. The Great Yang Gate is a gate of great Yang energy, implying that one attains enlightenment and possesses great spiritual power.
Unlike other temples, the Four Heavenly Kings are introduced here as the Eastern Guardian King, the Southern Guardian King, the Western Guardian King, and the Northern Guardian King. Passing through the Manse-ru leads to the Daeungjeon Hall. The Manse-ru symbolizes the human world, where one enters Nirvana and lives eternally. Upon verifying the orientation of Daeungjeon, the main hall of Jikjisa Temple, it is Jajwa-ohyang according to the celestial sphere. It faces almost due south. This is Confucian in nature. Consequently, Mt. Hwangak serves as the Right White Tiger. Using Daeungjeon as a reference point, Simgeomdang is located to the left in a 'ㄱ' shape, and Yukhwadang is located to the right. Simgeom means a house that seeks the sword of wisdom, and Yukhwa is a hall name signifying harmony among all.
A three-story stone pagoda stands in front of Yukhwadang. The small building on the left, standing side-by-side with Daeungjeon, is Gamunjeon, and the one on the right is Hyangjeokjeon. Gamun means to feel grace, and Hyangjeok means to have burned a lot of incense, referring to long-term spiritual practice. Behind Hyangjeokjeon Hall is Seobyeoldang, which faces Gwaneumjeon Hall. Beomjonggak is located to the right of Manseoru and guides the way to the Western Pure Land. A statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is carved in relief on the right side below a platform in front of Gwaneumjeon Hall, and to its right stands Samyeonggak (where the portrait of Samyeongdang is enshrined), where a magnificent pine tree is situated. Samyeonggak was rebuilt with the support of President Park Chung-hee, and the calligraphy on the signboard is in President Park's own handwriting. Overall, the ancient pine trees and the temple grounds harmonize beautifully. Although it was the day before Jungbok (the hottest day of summer) and a heat wave advisory had been issued, a mountain breeze blew, providing a refreshing coolness. This was also thanks to the white clouds blocking the sunlight from the sky. In front of it stands a large building, the Seolbeopjeon (Hall of Dharma). A distinctive feature of Jikjisa Temple is the presence of multiple Buddhist halls. As I was leaving, a painting and writing caught my eye, so I would like to share the text below. The eyes see nothing, there is no distinction; the ears hear no sound, so right and wrong are severed.
Let go of all distinctions and judgments; just behold the Buddha of the mind and take refuge in him.
This is the Nirvana verse of Layman Busul.
Since the eyes see nothing, there is nothing to distinguish; since the ears hear no sound, right and wrong are severed.
It means to lay down all distinctions and judgments, behold the Buddha of the mind, and return to oneself.
I look around until noon. I keep the grandeur of Mt. Hwangak in mind.
