Les Arabes avançaient lentement et ils étaient déjà beaucoup plus rapprochés. Nous n’avons pas changé notre allure, mais Raymond a dit : « S’il y a de la bagarre, toi, Masson, tu prendras le deuxième. Moi, je me charge de mon type. Toi, Meursault, s’il en arrive un autre, il est pour toi. » J’ai dit : « Oui » et Masson a mis ses mains dans les poches. Le sable surchauffé me semblait rouge maintenant.

아랍인들이 천천히 걸어왔는데, 벌써 매우 가까워져 있었다. 우리는 걸음걸이를 바꾸지 않았고, 레몽이 말했다. “싸움이 벌어지면, 마송, 너는 두 번째 녀석을 맡아. 나는 그놈을 맡을게. 뫼르소, 너는 또 다른 녀석이 나타나면 그 녀석을 맡아.” 나는 “알았어.” 하고 말했고, 마송은 바지 주머니에 두 손을 찔러 넣었다. 뜨겁게 달아오른 모래가 이제는 붉게 보였다.

The Arabs were walking slowly, but they were already much closer. We didn’t change our pace, but Raymond said, “If there’s any trouble, Masson, you take the other one. I’ll take care of my man. Meursault, if another one shows up, he’s yours.” I said, “Yes,” and Masson put his hands in his pockets. The blazing sand looked red to me now.

Die Araber kamen langsam auf uns zu und waren schon bedeutend näher. Wir gingen nicht schneller, aber Raymond sagte: «Wenn's zur Keilerei kommt, dann übernimmst du, Masson, den zweiten. Nous avancions d’un pas égal vers les Arabes. La distance entre nous a diminué régulièrement. Quand nous avons été à quelques pas les uns des autres, les Arabes se sont arrêtés. Masson et moi nous avons ralenti notre pas. Raymond est allé tout droit vers son type. J’ai mal entendu ce qu’il lui a dit, mais l’autre a fait mine de lui donner un coup de tête.

We moved steadily toward the Arabs. The distance between us was getting shorter and shorter. When we were just a few steps away from each other, the Arabs stopped. Masson and I slowed down. Raymond went right up to his man. I couldn’t hear what he said to him, but the other guy made a move as though he were going to butt him.

Mit gleichmäßigen Schritten gingen wir auf die Araber zu. Die Entfernung zwischen uns wurde immer kleiner. Als wir nur noch ein paar Schritte voneinander getrennt waren, blieben die Araber stehen. Raymond a frappé alors une première fois et il a tout de suite appelé Masson. Masson est allé à celui qu’on lui avait désigné et il a frappé deux fois avec tout son poids. L’Arabe s’est aplati dans l’eau, la face contre le fond, et il est resté quelques secondes ainsi, des bulles crevant à la surface, autour de sa tête.

그러자 레몽이 먼저 주먹을 한 방 날리며 마송을 불렀다. 마송은 자기가 맡은 아랍인에게로 갔고, 온 힘을 다해 두 번 후려갈겼다. 아랍인은 물속에 얼굴을 박은 채 퍼져버렸고, 몇 초 후에 머리 주변에서 거품이 끓어올라 물 위로 솟았다.

Then Raymond struck the first blow and called Masson right away. Masson went for the one that had been pointed out as his and hit him twice, as hard as he could. The Arab fell flat in the water, facedown, and lay there for several seconds with bubbles bursting on the surface around his head.

Da schlug Raymond als erster zu und rief auch sofort Masson. Masson ging auf den zu, der ihm bezeichnet worden war, und schlug zweimal mit aller Kraft zu. Pendant ce temps Raymond aussi a frappé et l’autre avait la figure en sang. Raymond s’est retourné vers moi et a dit : « Tu vas voir ce qu’il va prendre. » Je lui ai crié : « Attention, il a un couteau ! » Mais déjà Raymond avait le bras ouvert et la bouche tailladée.

그동안 레몽도 주먹을 휘둘렀고, 상대 얼굴이 피투성이가 되었다. 레몽은 내게로 고개를 돌리고 말했다. “이 녀석 꼬락서니 좀 봐!” 나는 그에게 소리쳤다. “조심해, 칼을 가지고 있어!” 그러나 이미 레몽은 팔을 찔렸고, 입을 베였다.

Meanwhile Raymond had landed one too, and the other Arab’s face was bleeding. Raymond turned to me and said, “Watch this. I’m gonna let him have it now.” I shouted, “Look out, he’s got a knife!” But Raymond’s arm had already been cut open and his mouth slashed.

Unterdessen schlug auch Raymond wieder zu, und der andere blutete im Gesicht. Raymond wandte sich zu mir um und sagte: «Jetzt sollst du mal was erleben!» Ich rief ihm zu: «Achtung! Er hat ein Messer.» Aber schon hatte Raymond einen Stich im Arm und eine gespaltene Lippe.

Masson a fait un bond en avant. Mais l’autre Arabe s’était relevé et il s’est placé derrière celui qui était armé. Nous n’avons pas osé bouger. Ils ont reculé lentement, sans cesser de nous regarder et de nous tenir en respect avec le couteau. Quand ils ont vu qu’ils avaient assez de champ, ils se sont enfuis très vite, pendant que nous restions cloués sous le soleil et que Raymond tenait serré son bras dégouttant de sang.

Masson lunged forward. But the other Arab had gotten back up and gone around behind the one with the knife. We didn’t dare move. They started backing off slowly, without taking their eyes off us, keeping us at bay with the knife. When they thought they were far enough away, they took off running as fast as they could while we stood there motionless in the sun and Raymond clutched at his arm dripping with blood.

Masson sprang vor. Aber der andere Araber war wieder hochgekommen und stellte sich hinter den Mann mit dem Messer. Wir wagten uns nicht zu rühren. Sie wichen langsam zurück, ohne uns aus den Augen zu lassen, und hielten uns mit dem Messer in Schach. Als sie zwischen sich und uns genug Raum gebracht hatten, machten sie sich aus dem Staub, während wir wie angewurzelt in der Sonne standen und Raymond sich den Arm hielt, aus dem das Blut tropfte.
