결과의 so, therefore, as a result

원인을 보여주기 위하여 사용하는 접속사로는 because와 since가 있다.

즉, because와 since 다음에는 원인이 나온다는 얘기다.

Since는 ‘~한 이후로’의 뜻으로 현재완료와 같이 사용될 뿐만아니라, because와 동일한 뜻인 ‘~때문에’로도 사용이 된다.

There is no meeting today because the boss is sick

We can’t have the meeting without boss since he has the agenda.

반면, 무언가의 결과나 그것에의 반응인 결과를 보여줄 때 사용하는 것이, so, therefore, as a result 이다.

그런데 사용하는 방법에 있어서는 약간의 차이가 있다. 예문을 봐야 이해가 간다.

I was confused, so I asked some questions

My watch is broken, so I’ll have it repaired

예문에서도 볼 수 있듯이 ‘so’는 두 문장을 하나로 합침으로서 각 문장 내의 생각들을 연결시켜 준다. 쉼표가 ‘so’ 앞에 나오는 형태다.

Sally worked very hard. As a result, she was successful

The software hasn’t arrived. As a result, we can’t start the project

하지만, ‘as a result’는 두 문장의 아이디어를 연결시켜 주지만, 각 문장은 분리된 채로 남아있다

The date is not available. Therefore, we need to reschedule.

The date is not available. We, therefore, need to reschedule.

The date is not available. We need to reschedule, therefore.

그리고 ‘therefore’는 예문처럼 문장 내의 다양한 위치에 올 수 있다는 것을 기억해두자.
