Ancient Athens or Sparta: Which was the better place to live?

Ancient Greece is famously considered the cradle of Western civilization. This is largely thanks to the cultures of two ancient Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta. These city-states contributed much to art, science, government, and warfare. To this day, we can still see the influence of Athens and Sparta on many societies and cultures! But if you had to live in ancient Athens or Sparta, which would you choose?

As the home of many great artists, writers, and thinkers, Athens was seen as the cultural center of ancient Greece. Athenians recited poetry, performed plays, and created beautiful sculptures and paintings. They even started the world’s first democracy! In this democracy, Athenians were free to hold different jobs, as well as practice free speech. Compared to Sparta, Athens was a much more open and lively society.

While Sparta could not rival Athenian culture, they had one of the best armies of the age. From childhood, every Spartan male dedicated his life to training for war. This made the Spartans into superior soldiers, who could keep their society safe from invaders and revolts. Spartan women were also expected to give their all for the city. For this reason, they had greater freedoms and rights than Athenian women.
