I’m not an island
by D.J. YOON
Ever since I learned to listen
To the message of the WIND
I find I’m not alone
Now that I could catch something
Of the story of GRASS
I say I’m not lonely
Ever since I learned to translate
Into the message of STARS
I find I’m not alone
Now that I could get the picture
Of the story of FLOWERS
I say I’m not lonely
난 외롭지 않아요
-윤동재
바람의 이야기를
들을 줄 알게 되고부터
난 외롭지 않아요
풀잎들의 이야기를
들을 줄 알게 되고부터
난 외롭지 않아요
별들의 이야기를
들을 줄 알게 되고부터
난 외롭지 않아요
꽃들의 이야기를
들을 줄 알게 되고부터
난 외롭지 않아요
Appreciation 感想
Based upon John Donne’s poem “No man is an island,” I sought to create the title.
The poet is singing the stories of the wind, grass, stars, and flowers, and these are all being told by Mother Nature.
The poet has transformed the scenes of nature into ‘a story of nature.’
So, ever since he learned to listen to the nature’s story, he’s repeatedly singing “I’m not lonely.”
I therefore find that learning to listen to the stories of nature could also mean that we can understand the stories of nature, and furthermore, talk to each other just like friends.
All in all, this is a poem that anyone can easily understand, but why is it still that I feel ‘deeply lonely’?
• In translation
Two verbs are used: say & find.
To rhyme, two adjectives are chosen: alone & lonely.
Two nouns are alternated: story & message.
For the expression ‘ever since I learned to listen to’, these phrases are used:
listen to
catch something of
translate into
get the picture of
In other words, I tried to take advantage of a variety of words, not repeating the same ones.

누구나 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 시이지만
그럼에도 진한 외로움이 느껴지는 것은 왜일까요?
