Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:14~22 - To the Church in Laodicea - Lukewarm faith and naked church, Receiving Only Rebuke and discipline from Jesus
Revelation 3:18 – (1) I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness
☞ Revelation 3:18 - I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. (NIV); I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (KJV); So I advise you to buy gold from me - gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. (NLT)
○ Jesus Christ gives the following three prescriptions to cure these fatal diseases. All three prescriptions are to buy from Jesus Christ.
First, Jesus was crucified by false (lies or liars) (John 8:44, 1 John 2:21) for truth (John 8:40~46, 14:6, 18:37~38), and He died on the cross and was resurrected on the third day. The meaning of being resurrected means that Jesus refined himself with fire. Therefore, Jesus himself is the purest gold itself and has the purest gold. So, he tells them to buy gold refined in the fire from Jesus, and become rich.
☞ Pure gold, refined or smelted in a furnace with 2000 degrees or more, signifies pure faith and righteous deeds, refined through trials and perseverance. So, Jesus prescribes that the members of church in Laodicea would buy gold refined in (or by) the fire (Job 23:10, Daniel 12:10, Zechariah 13:9, Malachi 3:2, 1 Peter 1:7) even at a high price (because they are rich) from Jesus, and then they could go through trials, and then their faith could be strengthened, and then they could become rich saints who do righteous acts.
Second, Jesus prescribes that the members of church in Laodicea would buy 'white clothes' from Jesus and wear them so that they can not see the shame of their nakedness. As I mentioned in <Bible Matrix ⑦_205> and <Bible Matrix ⑦_213>, which introduced 'white clothes or fine linen’ of <Revelation> 3:4~5, 'white clothes' are said to be noble, righteous, clean, and holy, and they are said to be the shining celestial garment and the robe of Christ (Revelation 1:13).
☞ Thus, 'white clothes or fine linen' represent 'the righteous acts (or deeds)' (Revelation 19:8), while 'black clothes (or robes)’, red clothes, and scarlet (or purple) clothes represent 'the unrighteous acts'. Therefore, the lukewarm acts of neutrality is to become a naked one because there are no clothes to wear.
☞ Recall that Laodicea produced fine black wool and cotton and was famous for its weaving and dyeing. Therefore, since Laodicea was famous for its cotton textile industry enough to make the white clothes that Roman senators wore, they must have been familiar with the process of making white clothes. So Jesus Christ tells them to buy white clothes and wear them. He advises to wear white clothes to cover the shame of nakedness through righteous deeds, not lukewarm acts.
