대만은 기존 C-130H 기단에 대한 대규모 업그레이드를 수행하는 대신 미국으로부터 록히드마틴 C-130J 수송기 10대를 구매할 계획이라고 CNA가 보도했다.

2026년 2월 9일, CNA는 중화민국 공군을 인용해 ‘타이무산 3호’로 명명된 C-130H 업그레이드 사업이 프로젝트 비용 문제로 인해 보류됐다고 전했다.

이에 따라 록히드마틴 C-130J 신형 기체 10대를 구매하고 혼합 기단을 운용하는 방안이 더 나은 선택으로 결정됐다.

CNA에 따르면, 계획됐던 C-130H 업그레이드에는 조종석 인터페이스와 충돌 회피 체계 통합이 포함돼 있었다. 중화민국 공군은 또한 기체 구조 보강이 필요하다고 밝혔다.

이번 도입 계획은 대만이 중국으로부터 증가하는 위협에 직면하면서 회복력 있고 역량 있는 군 전력을 지속적으로 구축해야 하는 필요성 속에서 추진되고 있다.

2026년 2월 8일에만 해도 대만 국방부는 대만 주변 해역에서 약 7척의 인민해방군 해군(PLAN) 함정이 탐지됐다고 밝혔으며, 이에 따라 중화민국 공군이 이를 감시해야 했다고 전했다.

70년의 역사 동안 C-130은 원래의 전술수송 임무를 넘어 다양한 임무를 수행하도록 개조돼 왔다.

2,500대 이상이 생산된 C-130은 공중급유기, 건십, 소방 항공기, 전자전기, 해상초계기, 특수작전기 등 다양한 역할로 배치돼 왔다.

Taiwan plans to purchase 10 Lockheed Martin C-130J transport aircraft from the United States (US) rather than carry out an extensive upgrade of its existing C-130H fleet, according to CNA.

On February 9, 2026, citing Taiwan’s Republic of China Air Force, CNA reported that an upgrade of the C-130Hs names ‘Taimushan No. 3’ had been shelved due to the costs involved in the project.

It was decided that purchasing 10 new Lockheed Martin C-130J and operating a mixed fleet was the better option.

According to CNA, the planned C-130H upgrade had included integrating the cockpit interface and collision avoidance systems. The Republic of China Air Force also said that airframes needed reinforcement.

The acquisition plan comes as Taiwan faces increasing threats from China resulting in a requirement to continue building a resilient and capable military force.

On February 8, 2026, alone Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said around seven People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were detected in the waters around Taiwan requiring the Republic of China Air Force to monitor.

During its 70-year history, the C-130 has also been adapted to perform a broad range of missions beyond the original tactical transport role.

More than 2,500 C-130s have been built and deployed in a number of roles including tanker, gunship, firefighter, electronic warfare, maritime patrol and special operations aircraft.
