Furniture is a word we use to describe tables, chairs, and sofas all together. All together, they are 'furniture'. When we talk about just one thing -- one chair, or one table -- we say, 'a piece of furniture' For example ""I want to buy a new piece of furniture for the bedroom'

It's not 100% logical... it's just how English has evolved.
