STORY9. ROLE REVERSAL: FOR RICHER OR POORER
DAVID WRIGHT: (VO)
DAVID WRIGHT: (VO)
1. time-honored
2. down the aisle
3. cash in
4. times have changed
5. for richer for poorer
STORY9. ROLE REVERSAL: FOR RICHER OR POORER
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) And finally tonight, love and marriage. You know the time-honored
DAVID WRIGHT:
(VO) Time was that the road to financial security for women ran straight down the aisle.
(VO) It's the plot of just about every Marilyn Monroe movie. Girl meets boy. Girl hopes to cash in big.
MARILYN MONROE (ACTRESS):
Oh, I don't care how rich he is. As long as he has a yacht, his own private railroad car and his own toothpaste.
DAVID WRIGHT:
(VO) But times have changed.
(OC) Diamonds are still a girl's best friend, but for boys, a ring like this turns out to be a pretty good investment. These days, men get the biggest economic boost from marriage because more wives are educated and working.
(VO) Median household income rose 60% for married men since 1970. For single men, just 16%. In the new home economics, it's now not uncommon at all for a wife to earn more than her husband. Just 4% did in 1970. 22% today.
(OC) Which one of you is the breadwinner?
JULIA HOLMES (WIFE):
That would be me, I guess.
DAVID WRIGHT:
(VO) Couples like Steve and Julia Holmes of
JULIA HOLMES:
You know, at times, I make considerably more than he does.
DAVID WRIGHT:
(OC) And Steve, you're okay with that?
STEVE HOLMES (HUSBAND):
You know, I am and I'm not. It's funny.
DAVID WRIGHT:
(VO) The recession has exaggerated that trend. The majority of jobs lost belonged to men. But the married ones, at least, have someone to share the pain.
ACTRESS ("BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS"):
I'd marry you for your money in a minute. Would you marry me for my money?
ACTOR ("BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS"):
In a minute.
ACTRESS:
So I guess it's lucky neither of us is rich, huh?
DAVID WRIGHT:
(VO) For richer or poorer. David Wright, ABC News,
STORY10. FOLLOW THE MONEY: DONATIONS
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) As we said, we've been asking, how much money has been raised for
BILL WEIR:
(OC) Well we're bearing down on a couple hundred million dollars. Red Cross is the big player in this charity game. $112 million donated to them. What's stunning is, almost a quarter of that money came in $10 text message donations. This is the new normal when it comes to charity.
DIANE SAWYER:
(VO) Especially since the big cell phone companies are waving the lag time. They're not waiting for you to pay your bill before they cut a check to the Red Cross.
BILL WEIR:
(OC) It's the most convenient way to give. But the fastest way to get your money on the ground, working, is to go to a charity's website and use a credit card.
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) How much now for the Red Cross?
BILL WEIR:
(OC) $112 million.
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) $112 million, and yet I read that they only have six clinics now on the ground. So where is the money being spent?
BILL WEIR:
(OC) That's the reality of the bottleneck right now. We asked them, break it down for us, if I give $10, what am I buying?
(VO) Well 90 cents comes right off the top for administration fees, about $4.50 for food, $3.64 for water. You know, tents, blankets, 91 cents for helicopter fuel, radios and those things.
(OC) But as you said, most of the supplies are sitting on pallets at the airport or back in the states, and charity watchdogs said they made some major changes at the American Red Cross since they took major grief post-Katrina, post-9/11.
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) I remember that.
BILL WEIR:
(OC) Heads rolled back then. The head of foreign aid this evening promised me they are doing it as fast as they can. But they have yet to only spend a third of the money.
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) And all that money raised for
BILL WEIR:
(OC) To
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) Now what about the scams out there?
BILL WEIR:
(OC) FBI says they've seen a few minor sort of website phishing scams.
(VO) We have one example of this, where somebody is encouraged to make immediate donations via
(OC) Reputable charities do not do that in this time of need. Beware of any unsolicited phone calls, as well. The Better Business Bureau has a great website for this. Charity Navigator. They vet them, they rate them. You can decide, I want my money to go to orphans, or to water, those sorts of things. You wouldn't give your money to an investor who just opened a week ago, the same goes with giving. Make sure they've been in
DIANE SAWYER:
(OC) So beware. Okay thanks, Bill. We'll stay on this.
