미국은 아랍에미리트(UAE)의 F-16 전력 전투 능력 강화를 목표로 하는 대규모 무장 패키지를 승인했다. 승인된 두 개의 패키지 총 가치는 약 18억 6천만 달러로 추산된다.

2026년 3월 19일 발표된 이번 승인에는 UAE 공군 및 방공군(AFAD)이 운용하는 첨단 F-16E/F 블록 60 “데저트 팔콘”을 위한 공대공 미사일과 정밀 유도 무장이 모두 포함된다.
미 국무부에 따르면, 이번 판매는 긴급 승인 결정 하에 이루어졌으며, 이에 따라 통상적인 의회 검토 기간 없이 절차가 진행될 수 있게 되었다.
공대공 능력 강화
첫 번째 패키지는 약 12억 2천만 달러 규모로, 최대 400기의 AIM-120C-7 또는 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM 미사일이 포함된다. 이들 가시거리 밖 공대공 미사일은 F-16이 장거리 및 경쟁 환경에서 다수의 공중 위협을 교전할 수 있는 능력을 크게 향상시킨다.
이 패키지에는 작전 유지를 위한 관련 지원 장비, 예비 부품, 물류 서비스도 포함된다.
정밀 타격 능력 강화
두 번째 패키지는 약 6억 4천 4백만 달러 규모로 공대지 능력에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 포함 항목은 다음과 같다:
1,500기의 GBU-39/B 소구경 폭탄(SDB I);900기의 KMU-556 합동 직격 탄약(JDAM)과300기의 KMU-557 JDAM 유도 키트.
이들 시스템은 UAE의 F-16에 다양한 목표에 대해 모든 기상 조건에서 높은 정확도의 타격 능력을 제공한다. 또한 임무 준비 및 무장 통합을 개선하기 위한 합동 임무 계획 시스템 요소도 포함되어 있다.
데저트 팔콘 전력 지원
UAE는 현재 78대의 F-16E/F 블록 60 항공기를 운용하고 있으며, 이는 지금까지 생산된 F-16 변형 중 가장 진보된 기종 중 하나다. “데저트 팔콘”은 AN/APG-80 AESA 레이더, 컨포멀 연료탱크, 첨단 전자전 시스템을 갖추고 있어 다목적 플랫폼으로서 높은 성능을 발휘한다.
이번에 승인된 무장들은 이러한 능력을 보완하여, 해당 전력이 공중 우세 및 정밀 타격 임무를 모두 수행할 수 있도록 완전한 장비 상태를 유지하는 데 기여할 것으로 예상된다.
무장 인도 일정은 공개되지 않았다. 미 국무장관은 국가 안보 이익을 위해 즉각적인 판매가 필요하다는 긴급 상황이 존재한다고 판단하여, 통상적인 의회 검토 요건을 면제했다.
F-16 전력 외에도 UAE는 미라주 2000-9 전투기를 운용하고 있으며, 향후 도입 예정인 다쏘 라팔 전투기 80대를 주문한 상태다. 해당 전력들이 실전 배치되기 전까지는 F-16E/F 전력이 국가 공군력의 핵심 축으로 계속 기능할 예정이다.

March 20, 2026 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The United States has approved a major weapons package for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), aimed at enhancing the combat capabilities of its F-16 fleet. The combined value of the two approved packages is estimated at $1.86 billion.

Announced on March 19, 2026, the approval covers both air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions for the UAE Air Force and Air Defence (AFAD), which operates the advanced F-16E/F block 60 “Desert Falcon”.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the sale was authorized under an emergency determination, allowing the process to move forward without the standard congressional review period.

Air-to-air capability boost
The first package, valued at approximately $1.22 billion, includes up to 400 AIM-120C-7 or AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles. These beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles significantly enhance the F-16’s ability to engage multiple aerial threats at extended distances and in contested environments.

The package also includes associated support equipment, spare parts, and logistical services required to sustain operations.

Precision strike enhancements
A second package, worth an estimated $644 million, focuses on air-to-ground capabilities. It includes:

• 1,500 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB I);
• 900 KMU-556 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and
• 300 KMU-557 JDAM guidance sets.

These systems provide the UAE’s F-16s with highly accurate, all-weather strike capabilities against a wide range of targets. The package also includes elements of the Joint Mission Planning System, enabling improved mission preparation and weapons integration.

Supporting the Desert Falcon fleet
The UAE operates 78 F-16E/F Block 60 aircraft, one of the most advanced F-16 variants ever produced. The “Desert Falcon” is equipped with the AN/APG-80 AESA radar, conformal fuel tanks, and advanced electronic warfare systems, making it a highly capable multirole platform.

The newly approved munitions are expected to complement these capabilities, ensuring the fleet remains fully equipped for both air superiority and precision strike missions.

No timeline has been disclosed for the delivery of the weapons. The U.S. Secretary of State determined that an emergency exists requiring the immediate sale in the interest of national security, thereby waiving the standard Congressional review requirements.

In addition to its F-16 fleet, the UAE also operates Mirage 2000-9 fighters and has ordered 80 Dassault Rafale aircraft, which are expected to enter service in the coming years. Until then, the F-16E/F fleet continues to serve as a central pillar of the country’s airpower.
