When the time comes, a Liberation Day message from high-ranking officials will undoubtedly be released; however, hearing a Liberation Day address from a humble citizen beforehand may also prove meaningful.

My beloved fellow citizens of the Republic of Korea,

This is Zheng Dong-hee greeting you.

I generally strive to think based on relatively rational standards, but I have one habit that stands as an exception.

On occasion, I add up the individual digits of a given number.

For example, August 15, 2026, according to my method, becomes $2+0+2+6+8+1+5$, which sums to 24.

Conversely, a neighboring nation that opened its doors at the time and selectively absorbed the science and technology of Western empires used its sole advantage—narrowing that technological gap faster than us—to follow in the footsteps of those Western empires.

I appeal to you regarding how this isolationism, which preceded the emergence of the Five Eul-sa Traitors, has transformed and re-manifested within contemporary South Korean society.

This transformation spans broadly across the current administration and the current opposition party alike.

The following reflects my personal notes written after the previous simultaneous local elections, where I felt that if the current opposition leader possessed a conscience and a sense of responsible politics, he ought to have stepped down by June 26 at the latest to take responsibility for the defeat. Yet, as you know, an irresponsible brand of politics unimaginable in the U.S. party system persists in the opposition to this day. Consequently, there is a risk that serious discussions on the electoral system itself may become diluted, reduced to mere ploys for extending political tenure.

As the results of the ruling party's national convention will become clear by this coming Liberation Day, I say to the opposition as well: let us not become "Five Eul-sa Traitors" of our time.

To look back beyond the problem of the Five Eul-sa Traitors during the 1905 Treaty is to see a rehash of an era when leadership failed to reform, locked the doors instead, and dared to speak the word "reform" only through media spin.

A different criterion—I define this as conscience and collective intelligence.
