5. Water-Heaven Xu(Su-Cheon- Su) ䷄ ......1
◎ Xu(需,수) teaches the aesthetics of waiting.
It teaches us to fimly hold onto our hopes and goals,
faithfully build our capabilities until the right time arrives,
and conduct ourselves with composure.
Life in this world is an ongoing series of hardships anyway.
If this difficult world is a wave of trials that cannot be avoided,
a noble person needs to equip themselves with composure.
Finding joy in contentment despite poverty(An-Bin-Nak-Do) is also ane of those ways.
▣ Waiting(Xu) with sincerity / trust(Yu-Bu) leads to grand success(Gwang-Hyeong) ;
remaining steadfast brings good fortune(Jeong-Gil),
and it is beneficial to cross a great river(I-Seop-Dae-Cheon).
[Explanation]
Confucius stated in the Danzhuan(Commentary on the Decision)
that "Xu(需,수) means waiting[須也,수야]," and in the Zaqua Chuan and Xugua Chuan,
it is defined as "inability to advance(Non-advancement)" and "the way of food and drink",
respectively.
Therefore, like Xu(需,수), on a cloudy day when rain clouds hang in the sky,
one should not venture outside, but rather act with self-restraint while enjoying food
and drink in a relaxed state, quietly and unnoticed waiting for the opportunity(Dae-Gi)
and holding onto grand hopes(Dae-Mang) until right time matures.
In the depiction of the Xu Hexagram(需卦,수괘), Qian(乾,건) is strong and vigorous,
seeking to move forward, while Kan(坎,감) acts as a pitfall blocking the path.
Therefore, one must wait for the right time before advancing.
However, even in waiting, there must be a firm belief in one's goal[有孚,유부 - Yu-Bu]
for light to shine and success to follow[光亨,광형 - Gwang-Hyeong].
Waiting must also remain upright to be auspicious[貞吉,정길 -Jeong-Gil] ;
only then will there be no great hardship even when crossing a great river
Confucius continues to emphasize in his commentary :
"Xu(需,수) means waiting[需須也,수수야].
When danger lies ahead[險在前也,험재번야], a steadfast person merely waits
for the right time and never recklessly charges ahead
Hence, they never throw themselves into a predicament where they are trapped
in danger [其義不困窮矣,기의불곤궁의].
In waiting, one must hold deep trust and belief [
and maintain an unwavering will under any circumatances to achieve good fortune[貞吉,정길].
Furthermore, while waiting, if one builds strength to cope with future matters rather
than idling away time
one will achieve success even when facing the danger of crossing a great
river(the world) [利涉大川 往有功也,이섭대천 왕유공야]."
Here, Xu(需,수) symbolizes enduring and waiting.
"One who waits must do so with a clear purpose,
waiting with a relaxed mind as if hosting a grand feast.
Did not Zhuge Liang sleep at Mt. Woionggang before meeting Liu Bei?"
Therefore, just as a young, immature person[屯蒙,준몽] requires patience
to be nurtured because they are young and naive,
one must not venture outside while nourishing themselves with food[需,수].
Foolish courage that fails to endure even this minimal attitude and recklessly
jumps into the river out of impatience while waiting for a boat is all the more unnecessary.
The Water-Heaven Xu Hexagram[
derives from the Thunder-Heaven Dazhuang Hexagram[雷天大壯卦,뇌천대장괘]
and the Wind- Matsh Zhongfu Hexagram
