《Flow and Awareness in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu – Healing Principles Through Sword and Energy》
The Philosophy and Practice of Healing in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu – A Path of Flow Through Body, Mind, and Energy
Introduction
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo is more than just a martial art. It is a training system that helps harmonize the body and mind through consistent practice. By refining the body through sword training, calming the mind through breathing, and restoring the natural flow of energy (Ki), practitioners can build both physical resilience and emotional clarity.
On May 30, 2025, a special healing session was held to demonstrate these principles. Using the metaphor of an "electrical tester," we explored the core flow of healing in four steps: Sensing the flow → Detecting blockages → Guiding energy → Natural healing.
1. Training Beyond the Dojang
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, training doesn't stop at the dojang. It continues through our thoughts, speech, and actions. Every movement, word, or intention can become part of your personal discipline.
This daily awareness leads to self-refinement and helps build more balanced and respectful relationships with others.
2. The Starting Point: Awareness and Stability
Every meaningful practice begins with awareness. To sense and guide energy accurately, one must develop calm breathing and a balanced state of mind.
In the session, we introduced the concept of "Eye-Fingers" — using your eyes and fingertips to scan energy flow in the body. Like an energy tester, this approach helps you intuitively ask, “Where is the energy blocked?”
3. Sensing Blocked Energy – Eye-Fingers
When the flow of energy (Ki) is blocked, it often shows up as pain or discomfort.
In other words, a blockage in energy creates pain, and stagnation in energy leads to physical or emotional symptoms.
With Eye-Fingers — a method that combines visual focus and fingertip sensitivity —
you can intuitively sense where the energy is stuck and where it flows freely.
4. Releasing Blocked Energy – Beam Fingers
Another key concept introduced in the session was Beam Fingers.
This involves using the fingertips to gently release blocked energy and help it move again.
The core principle is this:
> It's not about forcing it with willpower.
When the energy of your mind (heart + intention) moves first,
the energy of your body (physical + Ki) naturally follows —
and the stagnant energy begins to flow again on its own.
This is not about using physical strength to control the body.
Rather, it's about guiding energy through calm breathing and a steady mind,
which brings harmony and balance.
This principle also applies directly in martial arts:
> The sword follows the body, and the body follows the mind.
5. Healing Is the Return of Flow
When energy (Ki) starts flowing without blockage, pain and tension begin to ease naturally.
> As soon as energy begins to flow, healing has already started.
Healing isn’t some rare talent or special skill.
It’s a natural process that occurs when the body, energy, and mind return to their original balance.
It’s just like how water flows through pipes — when the path is open, flow happens naturally.
This is the core idea of healing through practice in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
6. The Blessing of Connection — A Gift from Nature
As energy flow is restored, we feel a deeper connection to nature.
From that connection, we may receive two meaningful abilities:
The first is the body’s ability to heal, activated by tuning in to natural vibrations.
The second is a deeper way of seeing — a kind of intuitive perception, often called the inner eye.
These are what we call gifts of connection — blessings that come not from effort, but from alignment with nature.
At the root of these gifts lies the light and vibration of nature, or simply put, nature’s love.
7. The Purpose of Training:
Awareness and Inner Growth Through Harmony
The direction of training in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not just about improving physical skill through techniques.
It is also about transforming our mindset and attitude,
which leads to greater awareness and spiritual maturity.
This balance between outer skill and inner growth
is at the heart of both martial arts training and living a meaningful life.
■ Closing Message
On May 30, 2025,
during the healing session,
we used the example of an electrical tester to clearly explain and demonstrate how to sense energy flow and support its restoration.
This method is not only useful in martial arts practice,
but also helpful in daily life —
allowing us to become more aware of the flow within our bodies and in our surroundings.
That said, we must remember:
" No human being is ever 100% perfect."
That’s why the only thing we can truly do — is give our best until the very end.
The principles shared above are not man-made inventions.
They are based on the natural laws of flow, which are inherently clear, complete, and constant.
It is not that these principles fail —
it’s simply that the human body and mind often fall short of embodying them fully.
That’s just how we’re built.
So, in this sense, “human training” means continuously moving closer to that natural perfection,
bit by bit, step by step.
Ultimately, the purpose is not merely to heal others.
"The deeper goal is to keep learning and awakening through the process of healing."
If each of us can regularly take a moment to step back and see ourselves from a third-person point of view — And through reflection, renewed commitment, and gratitude,
if we continue on this path sincerely,
Then whatever we need, whatever we seek, and whatever we truly hope for —
we will be able to reach it, in proportion to the effort we’ve made.
