Screwtape offers more advice /on using daily annoyances /to entrap a Patient:

It is, no doubt, impossible [to prevent his praying for his mother], but we have means of rendering the prayers innocuous. 

기도를 못하게 막는건 불가하나 그의 기도를 무위로 만들 방법이 있다

* render definition: 1. to cause someone or something to be in a particular state: 2. to change words into a different language or form: 

* innocuous ; Harmless; producing no ill effect. Inoffensive; unprovocative; not exceptional.

Make sure that they are always very ‘spiritual’, that he is always concerned with the state of her soul and never with her rheumatism. 

그의 기도를 항상 아주 영적으로 되게해서 엄마의 관절염을 절대로 생각하지 않고 영적인 것만 생각하게 하라

Two advantages will follow. 

두가지 우위효력이 따를 것이다

In the first place, his attention will be kept /on what he regards as her sins, 

by which, with a little guidance from you, he can be induced to mean any of her actions //which are inconvenient or irritating to himself. 

처음에는 엄마의 죄에 그의 관심을 두게 만들는데

그걸로 너의 안내를 조금 더하여 그에게 불편하거나 짜증나는  엄마의 어떤 행동까지도 다 의미/포함하는데로 유도하라

Thus you can keep rubbing the wounds of the day [a little sorer] /even while he is on his knees; 

그가 무릎 꿇고 기도하는 동안이라도 그의 상처를 계속 자극하여 더 아프게 하라

the operation is not at all difficult and you will find it very entertaining. 

이 작전은 그리 어려운게 아닐 뿐더러 그것이 매우 즐겁게 만든다는 것을 알게될 것이다

 

In the second place, since his ideas about her soul will be very crude and often erroneous, he will, in some degree, 

be praying /for an imaginary person, 

둘째로는 엄마의 영혼에 대한 그의 생각은 매우 조잡하고 오류적이기도 할것이기에 

그는 다소 상상의 인물을 위해 기도할 것이다

and it will be your task [to make that imaginary person daily less and less like the real mother] — the sharp-tongued old lady at the breakfast table. 

그 상상의 인물을  엄마가 진짜가 아닌것 처럼 매일 조금씩 하감시키는게 너의 일이다

아침 밥상에서 속이나 뒤집는 늙은 노인으로 말이다

In time, you may get the cleavage so wide /that no thought or feeling from his prayers for the imagined mother will ever flow over /into his treatment of the real one. 

때가 되면 거리감이 지나치게 벌어져서 상상 속의 모친을 위해 기도하는 그의 기도에서 어떤 마음이나 감정도

흘러 나오지 않아 현실에 있는 모친으로 대우할 수 없게될 것이다

I have had patients of my own so well in hand /that they could be turned at a moment’s notice /from impassioned prayer for a wife’s or son’s ‘soul’ /to beating or insulting the real wife or son /without a qualm.

내 병자들은 내 손아귀에서 너무 잘 놀아서  나의 순간적인 지시에 의해   자신들의 아내나 자식들을 위해  감정을 다해 기도하다가도 돌변적으로 변해서 그들을 때리거나 모욕할 수 있게 된다

* Impassioned definition, filled with intense feeling or passion; passionate; ardent. 

* qualm. 1 : a feeling of uneasiness about a point especially of conscience or propriety. 

위의 내용은 마귀가 하는 말로

기도하는 기독인도 마귀의 손에 놀아날 수 있다는 현실을 잘 보여주고 있고

또한 실제적으로도 일어나는 일이라 뼈있는 교훈으로 들려온다
