"♪ Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa~ Men have named you~♬"
It's a mystery that has puzzled art lovers for centuries. A secret kept for 500 years. Mc Ken Coul sang about it, countless tourists to the Louvre have wondered about it. The enigma of Mona Lisa's smile.
"♪ Do you smile to tempt a lover~? Mona Lisa~♬"
Scientists of University of Amsterdam now believe they have unlocked at least part of this Davinci Code, thanks to a computer and brand-new American face-recognition software.
"The scientists took those faces of ten people and generated a neutral template that was the almost average of the faces and compared that against Mona Lisa onto the full differences."
The computer turned Mona Lisa's face into a grid, so they can analyze the curvature of the lips, the crinkle of the eyes, the flare of the nostrils and dozens of other variables.
"They seem to find that the Mona Lisa was smiling around 80 percent of the time."
As absurd as it may be to break down a complex emotional state into percentages, the scientists found the subject was 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful, 2 percent angry.
There are mysteries no computer can solve : who is she and why did Leonardo give her such a complicated emotional life. Computer can only identify the subtleties that so many art lovers already knew were there.
