Albert Ketèlbey’s Bells Across the Meadows is a light classical piece composed in 1921, originally published for both orchestra and piano. Ketèlbey described it as a “characteristic intermezzo” that begins with solo bells, followed by a gentle melody in the strings and woodwinds, creating the effect of bells echoing from a distant belfry across meadows. The piece is known for its sentimental, nostalgic evocation of the English countryside and was voted the 36th most popular classical tune in a 2003 BBC poll. It is typically performed in E-flat major and has been recorded by many orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
