After humans, bees are the most highly organized social insects. A leader who manages an organization should not keep bees, as this creates two competing organizations; inevitably, one of the two is bound to fail. This is due to a physical principle: physically, the presence of two nuclei leads to separation.
There is a single queen bee, while the rest are divided into soldier bees and worker bees; drone bees exist solely to mate with the queen, and those that do so perform no labor, as they are the queen's consorts. Notably, the queen is female, reflecting a matriarchal structure akin to certain human societies.
Bees construct their hives in a hexagonal shape—representing the number six, which embodies the "Yin" principle (or the physical form) within the fundamental cosmic numerical pairing of one and six. This shape also symbolizes the six lines (*liuyao*) of the *I Ching* (Book of Changes), as Yin represents the structural form.
In Korea, pavilions (*jeongja*) are typically built on riverbanks or cool mountain peaks with hexagonal roofs, though octagonal pavilions—reflecting the numerology of the Eight Trigrams (*Palgwae*)—also exist.
When two queen bees emerge, a swarm splits off to form a new colony (*bunbong*); in human terms, this signifies a division into two separate nations. This situation mirrors the division of the Korean Peninsula into North Korea—led by the Communist leader Kim Il-sung—and South Korea—a democratic state led by President Syngman Rhee.
The food source for bees is honey, the essence of plants; the corresponding Chinese character is *mil* (蜜). This character combines the element for "must" (*pil*, 必) with the element for "insect" (*chung*, 虫). It implies that just as ascending to a position of official rank requires a specific process—likened here to the life cycle of an insect—so too does the bee (represented by the "insect" element) play a vital role. Bees possess a life-sustaining energy (*hwal-in-ji-gi*), as evidenced by their use in medical treatments like bee-sting therapy.
Unlike bees, flying insects such as cicadas and dragonflies undergo a process of "innovation"—shedding their old shells—as they transition from the larval stage.
Animals, as living beings, possess both *che* (essence/form) and *yong* (function/activity); capable of movement, they can reproduce through the direct mating of male and female. In contrast, plants—which primarily embody *che*—are static; their reproduction relies on indirect union between male and female elements, a process facilitated by bees and butterflies. To attract a third party—specifically, pollinators—plants employ a dual strategy involving form and function. Regarding form, they utilize brilliant colors and beautiful shapes to catch the eye and draw attention. Regarding function, they lure these creatures with sweet nectar. A third element—acting as a crucial medium—is fragrance.
Bees and butterflies survive by consuming nectar. Entrusting delicate flowers to large animals would risk damaging them; thus, the natural order has wisely assigned this role to small creatures like butterflies and bees.
Hummingbirds, which are also small, similarly feed only on nectar. However, being larger than bees or butterflies, they would damage the flowers if they landed on them; instead, they hover in mid-air and sip the nectar with their beaks. As the smallest of all birds, they possess the fastest wingbeat. They must flap rapidly to remain suspended in the air without landing.
A hummingbird’s wings beat 230 to 250 times per second, corresponding to a frequency of 230 to 250 Hz—meaning the frequency matches the number of wingbeats almost exactly. It beats its wings 13,800 to 15,000 times per minute—a true model of diligent movement. This is the result of an evolutionary process driven by the need to consume nectar, leading to the development of unmatched flying skills and the necessity of expending energy through such rapid wingbeats.
Similarly, for humans to advance into the "sweet honey" world of the *Jin-in* (the enlightened, authentic being) in the coming era, one must seek out a sound, well-organized Taoist community and devote ceaseless effort to the path. We are urged to emulate the wingbeats of the hummingbird; these movements serve not only to hover in mid-air but also to shake off and disperse pollen.
Zhuangzi, a renowned figure in Taoism, is famous for his writings featuring the vision of transforming into a butterfly.
In the study of *Feng Shui* (geomancy), there exists a land formation known as the "Butterfly-on-the-Wall" type (*Jeop-byeok-hyeong*).
Although the Taoist organization "Mogudang" is currently modest in scale, it aspires to build a paradise—a realm of ultimate bliss—on earth by harnessing the vital essence of heaven and earth. If you desire the sweet taste of honey, you must correctly understand and follow the lineage of the Way, becoming a *Junja* (noble person)—the human fruit of the *Jin-in* (True Person).
