⑥ 종파간의 화목은 세계평화를 향한 필수조건

이 세속적 시대에 종교가 할 수 있는 일이 무엇인지를 물어 보는 분이 많습니다. 거기에 대한 본인의 소견은, 세계 종교들이 가치관의 보편적이고도 불변적인 토대, 즉 절대가치를 제시하여 모든 정부들이 그 위에서 참된 조화를 이룰 수 있게 해야 할 것이고, 과학기술이 바른 가치관 아래서 인류에게 유익한 방향으로 나아가도록 향도해야 할 것이며, 지상의 모든 문화권들이 신 중심의 전통하에 순화되고 고양되어 만인에게 공유되며, 길이 후대에 전승되도록 해야 할 것이라는 것입니다. 

진실로, 본인이 말하는 이러한 이상은 지상에 하나님의 왕국을 세우는 일이라 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 본인은 이 일이 가능하다고 믿고 있습니다. 어떤 분들은 본인이 너무 이상주의적이라고 평을 해오고 있으며, 본인도 이것을 시인합니다. 그러나 본인에게는 다른 선택의 여지가 있을 수 없습니다. 하나님은 본인을 부르셨으며, 이러한 사명을 주셨기 때문입니다. 

본인은 지금까지 하나님의 이상을 가르치는 데에만 그친 것이 아니고 지상에 하나님의 뜻을 실현하는 일에 생애를 바쳐 왔습니다. 그동안 본인이 추진해 온 선교, 교육, 학술, 승공, 종단 및 교단간의 화해, 사회봉사 등의 활동이 그것입니다. 이중에서도 특히 강조하고 싶은 것은 종단 및 교단간의 화해운동입니다. 

오늘날 인류가 당면하고 있는 한 가지 큰 문제가 수많은 기독교파들 사이에서, 여러 세계 종교들 사이에서, 그리고 각 제계 종교 내부에서 빚어지고 있는 상호 몰이해의 현상입니다. 이 문제를 해결하고자 하는 다양한 노력에도 불구하고, 종교 공동체들간의 대립과 적대감은 여전히 계속되고 있습니다.

지난 수세기 동안에 벌어졌던 종교전쟁은 오늘도 그치지 않고 있습니다. 상호일치를 위한 수많은 운동들이 시도되어 왔으나, 독실한 신앙자들 사이에는 아직도 불관용, 종교적 편협 및 종교적 교만의 풍조가 팽배해 있습니다. 그래서 대부분의 종교들이 같은 하나님을 섬기고, 심지어 같은 교리를 갖고 있는 경우가 빈번하였음에도 불구하고 종교인들은 상호탄압과 적대행위를 계속해 왔습니다. 

우리는 하나님이 교단주의나 교리나 파당주의를 초월해 계신다는 사실을 깨달아야 되겠습니다. 하나님의 목적은 언제나 전인류를 구원하시는데 있어 왔고, 특정 민족이나 인종이나 종교단체만을 구원하시려는 것이 아니었으며, 이것은 지금 이 시간에도 변함이 없습니다.

종교인으로서 우리가 상호간의 싸움과 적대행위를 종식시키지 않는다면, 세상을 구원하시려는 하나님을 도울 수가 없습니다. 많은 종교지도자들이 이것을 절감하여 왔으나, 여러 복잡한 이유 때문에 이 문제의 해결은 번번이 좌절되어 왔습니다. 

본인이 강조해 온 것은, 세계평화를 위한 필수적인 조건이 바로 종교간의 화목이라는 것이었습니다. 지금까지 어느 한 종교가 하나님을 완전하게 대변하는 일은 불가능하였기 때문에, 종교들이 갖고 있는 다양한 견해들은 필연적인 산물입니다.

그러나 우리 모두는 한 하늘 부모의 자녀들인 연고로, 우리는 한 대가족 안의 형제자매들인 것이며, 따라서 종교간의 갈등과 증오는 불필요한 것들입니다. (133-273)

⑥ 宗派間の和睦は世界平和に向かう必須条件

この世俗的時代に宗教のできることが何であるかを尋ねる方がたくさんいます。それに対する私の所見は、世界の宗教が価値観の普遍的かつ不変的な土台、すなわち絶対価値を提示して、すべての政府がその上で真なる調和を遂げるようにすべきでしょうし、科学技術が正しい価値観の下で人類に有益な方向に進んでいくよう案内すべきでしょうし、地上のすべての文化圏が神中心の伝統下に昇華され高揚され万人に共有され、道が後代に伝承されるようにすべきだというのです。

真に、私が言うこのような理想は、地上に神様の王国を立てることだと言うこともできます。そして、私はこのことが可能だと信じています。ある方々は私がとても理想主義的だと評していますし、私もこれを認めます。しかし、私には他の選択の余地がありえません。神様が私をお呼びになり、このような使命をお与えになったからです。

私は今まで神様の理想を教えることだけにとどまったのではなく、地上に神様のみ旨を実現することに生涯を捧げてきました。これまで私が推進して来た宣教、教育、学術、勝共、宗団および教団間の和解、社会奉仕などの活動がそれです。この中でも特に強調したいのは、宗団および教団間の和解運動です。
　
今日人類が当面している一つの大きな問題は、間で、いろいろな世界の宗教の間で、そして各世界宗教の内部でもたらされている相互不理解の現状です。この問題を解決しようとする多様な努力にもかかわらず、宗教共同体間の対立と敵対感は相変わらず継承されています。

過ぎし数世紀の間に起こった宗教戦争は、今日も終わらないでいます。相互一致のための数多くの運動が試みられて来ましたが、篤実な信仰者たちの間にはいまだ不寛容、宗教的偏狭および宗教的高慢の風潮がみなぎっています。だから、大部分の宗教が同じ神様に仕え、甚だしくは同じ教理を持っている場合が頻繁であったにもかかわらず、宗教人たちは相互弾圧と敵対行為を継続してきました。

私たちは神様が教団主義や教理や党派主義を超越しておられるという事実を悟らなければなりません。神様の目的はいつも全人類を救われるところにあって、特定民族や人種や宗教団体だけを救われようというものではなかったし、これは今この時間にも変わりはありません。

宗教人として私たちが相互間の闘いと敵対行為を終息させないなら、この世を救われようとする神様を助けることができません。多くの宗教指導者たちがこれを痛感してきましたが、さまざまな複雑な理由のためにこの問題の解決はいつも挫折してきました。

私が強調してきたのは、世界平和のための必須的な条件がまさに宗教間の和睦だというものでした。今まである一つの宗教が神様を完全に代弁することは不可能だったので、宗教が持っている多様な見解は必然的な産物です。

しかし、私たちすべては一つの天の父母の子女たちであるがゆえに、私たちは一つの大家族の中の兄弟姉妹たちなのであり、したがって宗教間の葛藤と憎悪は不必要なものです。（一九八四・八・一三、ロッテ・ホテル）

⑥  Harmony Between the Denominations is a Necessary Condition for Heading Towards World Peace

There are many people who ask what religion can do in such a secular age. My views on that are the following: world religions provide a common yet unchanging foundation of value systems ; that is to say, they assert absolute values, and on that foundation all the governments must realize true harmony ; with a proper value system science and technology should guide humankind in a valuable direction ; all the cultural realms on earth should be purified and uplifted through a tradition centered on God, and that tradition should belong to all people, and the religions should make sure that tradition is transmitted from generation to generation. 

Truly I can say to you, this kind of ideal is the establishing of God's Kingdom of Heaven on earth. And I believe this is possible. Some people assess me as too idealistic, and I acknowledge that. But I have no other choice because God called me and gave me this kind of mission.

Up until now I have not just taught about God's ideal ; I have dedicated my life to the work of realizing God's will on earth. During that time the missionary work, educational work, the scholastic work, the victory over communism work, and the harmony that I promoted between the denominations and churches and the social service activities were all for that.

Among these many areas, what I want to stress is the harmony between the denominations and churches. One substantial problem that humankind is facing today is the present situation of the mutual lack of understanding brewing within each of the world's religions, between the religions, and between the many Christian denominations. 

In spite of many varied efforts to solve these problems, the antagonism and hostility of the religious associations continue unchanged. The religious wars which occurred over the past many centuries are still not over today.

There have been many movements for mutual understanding, but between sincere believers, indifference, religious narrow-mindedness, as well as the tendency for religious pride are still preval‎ent. In spite of most of the religions worshipping the same God, and frequently even having the same doctrine, religious people continue to oppose each other and to act like enemies.

We must come to realize the truth that God is beyond denominationalism, doctrines or sectarianism. God's purpose has always been to save all of humankind; it has not been to save just one special people or race or religious organization. And His purpose has not changed up to this moment now. 

If, as religious people, we do not stop these fights and antagonistic actions between ourselves, we will not be able to help God save the world. Many religious leaders have felt keenly about this, but because of many complicated problems, the solution suffered frequent setbacks.

What I have stressed all along is that harmony between the religions is a necessary condition for world peace. Because it was impossible until now for any one religion to be the complete spokesman for God, the varied interpretations that the religions have are inevitable outcomes.

But for the reason that we are all the children of one heavenly parent, we are all brothers and sisters within one extended family. Accordingly, between religions there is no need for conflict and hatred. (133-273)
