■ Subject: The Zeroized Mind, the Principle of Emptying and Passing Beyond
📅 August 28, 2025, Thursday
Having completed the seminar in Bulgaria, I now sit at the airport gate and once again reflect on the essence of training and of life itself.
For a human being to view oneself from the perspective of a third person may seem simple, yet to see oneself completely in this way is by no means easy. Still, this can be expressed as setting the reference point of the mind to zero.
Looking at oneself from such a third-person standpoint varies in depth and degree from person to person. Yet, in the end, it is no different from zeroizing the mind. Such a state can be expressed in many ways, for example:
1. To observe what I am thinking, saying, and doing — an act of self-reflection.
2. To set the reference point of the mind to zero.
3. To forget oneself, to abandon, or to empty oneself.
4. To have equalized pressure throughout the body so that energy flows smoothly, maintaining a healthy state.
5. To fulfill the foundation of a prayerful heart and a reverent heart.
6. To be able to thoroughly analyze and judge oneself.
7. To encounter the invisible world from within the visible world.
8. To establish the basis for bringing forth being (有) from non-being (無).
9. To cultivate the mental state that observes, reflects, and judges one’s words, thoughts, and actions objectively.
10. To prepare the foundation for attaining necessary enlightenment.
Throughout life, when something is not yet known, it remains mysterious and abstract. Yet once it is understood, one realizes that truth is neither complicated nor difficult, but simple.
It is the same with Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu training. To understand and follow Kimu practice may take time, but once it is grasped, it becomes simple. When unknown, it may seem only wondrous, easily passed over. Yet it is in fact one of the very principles by which the world turns, the starting point of all existence.
As the founder of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, it is precisely this principle that I transmit and teach.
This one principle may be regarded as the highest stage pursued by many training and religious organizations. However, in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, rather than describing it as “high,” it is more fitting to say that it is the recognition of the lowest, most fundamental ground.
I merely know this ground principle — it is not that I know all principles. Human beings, even if reborn countless times, are not made to know the whole. To try to comprehend or master the whole is itself ignorance and greed. Such striving only shortens one’s life.
Therefore, each person need only live in accordance with one’s abilities and limits, fulfilling the role that is fitting. This is the way of following the principle of nature.
This morning, at the hotel breakfast table, Tamara, who had come from Germany for the seminar, shared her experience. She explained that after feeling an intense wave of energy, she became uncomfortable and even fell into pain. She sought the consultation of a renowned doctor, yet no clear remedy was found. To her I gave two pieces of advice:
First, simply let it pass by.
Second, find the reference point of the mind.
Yet in truth, these two are by no means easy for most people. To find the reference point of the mind is what can also be expressed as zeroizing the mind. It may appear simple, but in reality it can be very difficult. Yet once it is recognized, it is exceedingly simple and not at all complicated.
In most training groups and religious practices, such Ki-based (氣的) experiences are often emphasized, heightened, and sought after. Tamara’s experience of such energetic waves may certainly be classified as a very high-level Ki-based experience — an experience brought forth by the workings of Ki itself. Yet in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu practice, such phenomena and experiences are to be resolutely passed beyond.
The reason is clear: if one does not know this principle, attachment to such experiences will prevent the attainment of the true goal, and even make it difficult to sustain a healthy life.
This goal can be described as nothing other than an encounter with nature.
Thus, rather than striving to cling to Ki-based experiences, one must let them pass beyond. Only then can the reference point of the mind be set to zero, and words, thoughts, and actions become one, merging with the principle of nature.
Through this process, one realizes:
The true goal is not found in some distant or exalted stage, but in the most fundamental ground, where the simplest principle is revealed.
By recognizing this in advance, one may live life with greater composure and abundance.
