Claude혹은 Fido로 알려진 Claude Speed는 Grand Theft Auto시리즈(Rockstar North제작, 1997년~최근)의 가상의 캐릭터이다. 그는 유저가 조종하는 게임의 주인공으로 Grand Theft Auto2에 처음으로 등장했다. 풀 네임은 GTA2 게임에 포함된 오프닝 라이브액션 무비에 등장한다. 또한 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA: SA)에 카메오로 잠시 출연했을 때 등장하는 대사와 Grand Theft Auto III (GTA3)의 GXT 데이터 파일에 주인공의 기본 이름이 Claude로 정해져 있다는 사실로 GTA2의 주인공이 GTA3의 주인공과 동일한 인물이라는 게 추정되어왔다.  Claude Speed, also known as Claude and Fido, is a fictional character in the Grand Theft Auto video game series (1997-present, Rockstar North). DMA Design 사는 게임 판촉용 동영상이면서 동시에 게임의 오프닝 동영상으로 실사 영상을 제작한 바 있다. 이 실사 동영상에서 Claude Speed는 Grand Theft Auto 게임과 유사한 수많은 범죄 행위를 저지르는 역할로 나온다. 동영상에서 클라우드는 Zaibatsu조직(동영상에서 클라우드에게 상품과 운송차량을 도둑맞음)에서 보낸 암살자에게 총을 맞고 죽기 전까지 수많은 범죄 조직의 보스 밑에서 일을 하는 모습으로 보여졌다.  Little history is known about the character from GTA2; however, DMA Design had previously released a promotional movie for the game, which was also compiled into the opening cinematic of the game, depicting a live-action rendition of Claude Speed committing several criminal acts, similar in all Grand Theft Auto games. In the movie, Claude is seen performing jobs for several crime bosses, before being shot dead by an assassin sent by the Zaibatsu Corporation, whose van and merchandise were previously stolen by Claude.

 He works his way up the Yakuza ladder, gaining the favor of crime lord Kenji, and meeting a crooked cop named Ray, and Media Millionaire Donald Love. He is eventually asked to kill Kenji by Donald Love, and to frame the Colombian Cartel for the job. The reason behind this is explained to be a method of dropping property values of a rival company, a tactic Love learned from Avery Carrington in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Asuka takes over the Yakuza, and becomes obsessed with revenge against the Cartel. She sends Claude on a number of missions to slow down the spread of SPANK in Liberty City.

Claude's Silence(클라우드의 침묵)

 클라우드는 GTA3에서 단 한마디의 말도 하지 않는 침묵의 주인공으로 묘사되어왔다. 과거의 비디오게임 주인공과 달리 말 한마디도 하지 않아 이는 GTA팬 커뮤니티에서 종종 조롱의 대상이 되었다. 클라우드는 GTA:SA 에서도 침묵을 유지했다. CJ는 클라우드와의 자동차 경주에서 이긴 후 그에게 “벙어리 병신”과 “혓바닥 없는 뱀”이라고 말하고 저주한 바 있다.
 Claude is often noted for being a silent protagonist in GTA III, never seen or heard uttering a single word throughout his appearances. This often made him the butt of jokes in the GTA fan community for not saying anything, similar to the heroes of older videogames. Claude continued to be a silent character throughout GTA:SA. Carl Johnson himself also mentioned, and cursed, Claude's muteness after seeing the run-down garage he won from Claude, calling him a "mute asshole" and a "snake without a tongue."

위키피디아라는게 원래 모두가 자유로이 열람하고 수정할 수 있는 자료라 글솜씨 좋은 사람이 꼭 자료를 쓰게 되는것만은 아니다. 위 번역문은 필자의 머릿속을 거쳐 이해하기 쉽게 주석을 달고 필요없는 문장은 뺐다.
이 번역을 하기 전 GTA:LCS 용으로 에디슨카터씨가 제작한 치트디바이스에 클라우드 스피드라는 이름이 언급되어있는걸 보고 의문을 품은적이 있다. GTA3 의 주인공은 Claude Vercetti가 아닌가?
알아보니, 외국의 포럼에서는 모두들 클라우드 스피드라는 이름을 쓰고있는데 한국에서만 유달리 클라우드 버세티라는 이름과 함께 토미 버세티의 조카라는 이상한 정보가 돌아다니고있다.
생각해본 결과, GTA의 시대별 자료라며 요상한 연표가 있고, 토미가 클라우드에게 범죄 기술을 가르쳐줬다느니 이런 글이 돌아다니는데, 형식은 외국의 글을 번역한것처럼 위에 영어, 아랫줄은 한글식으로 되어있으나 정작 검색해보니 나오는건 없었다. 누구인지 몰라도 이런 몹쓸 낚시질을 한 사람은 누구인가?
덕분에 우리나라 GTA유저들은 모두들 GTA3 주인공이 Claude Vercetti라고 알고있다. 낚시 성공 축하한다.
위의 번역 자료를 종합해보니 필자는 이런 판단을 내렸다. 클라우드는 시대상으로 SA에서 산삐에로에서 CJ와의 레이스에서 패배한 후 카탈리나와 함께 리버티시티로 이동하게 되었고, 그곳에서 GTA3 오프닝 장면, 즉 카탈리나의 배신을 겪게 되고 카탈리나를 죽여 복수에 성공한다. 그리고 그 후 무슨 일인지는 몰라도 약 10년간 냉동 수면 감옥에 들어가 동면 상태에 있다가 깨어나게 되고, 깨어나보니 기억상실증에 걸려 7개 조직 9명의 보스로부터 임무를 받아 미션을 진행하는게 GTA2 인것이다. 필자의 내용은 2006년 1월 현재 밝혀진 사실만을 바탕으로 추론한 것이므로 후에 얼마든지 변경 될 수 있다. 이 스포일러를 보며 좀 더 매니악한 대한민국 GTA유저들이 늘어나기를 바라며 필자는 이 글을 마친다. ps. 번역에 도움을 주신 고학번 선배님인 막내삼촌에게 감사의 인사를 드립니다.
