What is the aim of the programme? |

The aim of this programme is to provide Registered Nurses with the vehicle to upgrade skills and knowledge through participation in a compressed programme of study, to meet current competence requirements of the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
In addition the programme aims to provide a flexible mode of delivery to accommodate student needs.

What will I study? |
|
You will study 2 compulsory papers, one theoretical and the other practical. 701 Returning to Practice: Registered Nurse 702 Nursing Practice: Clinical
Returning to Practice (15 credits) This on-line paper examines the current New Zealand practice setting for Registered Nurses, framed by the NCNZ domains of competence for Registered Nurses. Timeframe is flexible.
Nursing Practice (30 credits) A six-week block of clinical experience at a NCNZ approved site. Negotiated by student, with assistance from NorthTec if required. Paper must be completed in 6 weeks.

What do I need for on-line learning? |
|
Minimum requirements for access to NorthNet The online component of this course requires a computer with internet access. A PC less than 3 years old with broadband access will have superior access speeds. A printer and/or USB flash drive is also highly recommended.
Valid email address You will receive a NorthTec email address on enrolment, but you may also use another valid email address if you wish.

How long will my course take? |
|
This course will take a minimum of 9 weeks of full-time study to complete.
Theory Module: flexible mode. Clinical Module: 6 week clinical placement at Northland DHB sites or non-DHB settings as approved by NCNZ.
Students can also study on a part-time basis, provided the clinical block can be completed in 6 weeks.

What else do I need to know about this programme? |
|
Occupational Health Screening Before attending clinical placements at Northland Health facilities, you are required to supply the results and outcomes of an Occupational Health Screening to NorthTec. This is then provided to Northland Health who require this information before students attend clinical placements. Failure to meet the Occupational Health Screening requirements of Northland Health means a student will not be provided with clinical access to their facilities.
Once enrolment has been confirmed, students are sent an Acceptance Information Pack, detailing all the required information for the Occupational Health Screening process. This pack can also be obtained from NorthTec Registry, and students are provided with a checklist in their Student Handbook.
Indemnity Insurance It is compulsory for nursing students to have personal indemnity insurance before commencing clinical placements, and is the individual responsibility of each student to organise and maintain this insurance.
Students can arrange insurance through their own private insurance company, or as part of membership to a professional organisation such as New Zealand Nurses Organisation or College of Nurses Aotearoa. Further information is provided in the Student Handbook.
Health Declaration All students undertaking this programme are required to complete a ‘Health Declaration” form, which will be enclosed in the enrolment pack.
Statement of previous or pending convictions All applicants are required to declare, in writing, any previous or pending convictions.
Clinical Uniform A clinical uniform will be required in the first semester of the first year. Details will be supplied with the enrolment pack.
Clinical Placements Students undertaking clinical experience are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.

What are the entry requirements? |
|
Applicants must hold a qualification recognised by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as acceptable, for entry to this programme. An example of this is a Registered Nurse (previously RGON or RCpN) qualification.
Students for whom English is a second language must provide evidence of an IELTS score of at least 7.0 in reading, listening, writing and speaking respectively, or recognised equivalent.
Nurses who have not qualified in New Zealand: An overseas qualified nurse will first need to contact the Nursing Council of New Zealand and received written instructions on competency requirements. NCNZ website: www.nursingcouncil.org.nz

What is the Selection Process? |
|
All applicants will be interviewed. You need to bring a copy of your practising certificate or evidence of your registration as a nurse.
All those who meet the entry requirements will be selected.

What will it do for me? |
|
Successful graduates of this programme will be eligible to apply to NCNZ for a current practising certificate. The graduate will demonstrate competency to practice in the NCNZ domains of:
- Professional Responsibility
- Management of Nursing Care
- Interpersonal Relationships
- Inter-professional Health Care and Quality Improvement

|
2008 Programme Fee estimate: $1302.87 (GST inclusive)
Where options are available within programmes, fees may vary depending on student choices. An invoice with the exact fee will be issued when your enrolment is accepted.
Course related costs Students need to allow approximately $50.00 for the course for stationery requirements.

- Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Registered Nurse Competence
Professional Qualification Successful participants will be eligible to apply to NCNZ for a practising certificate as a ‘Registered Nurse’ in New Zealand

What career opportunities can this programme lead to? |
|
This programme will provide you with evidence of current competency for the Nursing Council of New Zealand. You may then apply for an annual practising certificate. When you receive your practising certificate you will be eligible for employment as a Registered Nurse in New Zealand. Your scope of practice will not change from your initial registration.
This programme is a stand-alone qualification to enable graduates to re-enter the workforce, and is not linked to the Bachelor of Nursing programme. Post-registration education options for graduates of this programme are the same as those available to registered nurses, and may be discussed with your programme co-ordinator.
